to Tumblr API Discussion
Hello - I've made this request many times in the past, but I'm hoping
now that Tumblr has a solid team of developers making consistent
progress on the API, there will be more of a chance this request will
be met with enthusiasm.

I am the developer of MarsEdit, a desktop blogging app for the Mac. It
supports Tumblr today, but the experience is disappointing to
customers who are accustomed to using the web interface's facility for
uploading individual photos for insertion into a non-photo-type post.
(The "+ Upload Photo" button, near the post editor).

Currently the API does not support anything like an "uploadPhoto"
method to accomplish this. If a user wants to upload a photo, they
must do so using a photo-type post.

Since Tumblr already allows multiple photos to be uploaded in a Photo-
type post, it doesn't seem particular risky to open up the API to
allow photos to be uploaded directly in a manner similar to how it's
supported in the web interface.

Currently MarsEdit has special, apologetic language in the UI for
Tumblr alone because it is unique among all the blog systems I
support, in that it doesn't support uploading arbitrary media for
insertion into a post.

Thank you for reconsidering this. It would be great to someday be able
to offer Tumblr customers the same level of functionality as I offer
for other blog systems.

This feature currently isn't on our roadmap but we'll be sure to announce it at developers.tumblr.com.

is there any chance it will get into the in next 3 month? Any way
developers can actually influence that?

I am asking that because we are building Posterous to Tumblr data
porting tool, and it's pretty useless unless we also move media files,
which is now impossible because lack of this feature.

thanx,
Mark

I've been asking for this for years and by this point I tend to think there must be an internal policy or strategy at Tumblr resisting this feature. My customers are always confused and surprised when I explain that the shortcoming in my app is based on a limitation of Tumblr's API.

I think your use case in particular is a great example of how opening up the API in this manner can have benefits to Tumblr that are hard to predict. Your tool would be a customer recruitment tool for the company but, as you note, it will fail to recruit anybody if they see they will lose their media in the migration.
