Hello everyone!

As you know you were invited to this group because you spoke with us @ ReggaeFest in Tulsa this year about wanting to get a NORML chapter started in Tulsa.  Thank you very much for taking the interest in getting active with NORML.

I have a question for everyone that has joined so far (10 out of the 130 email addresses I collected).

Why are you interested in NORML and what are your areas of skill that could be beneficial to your local NORML chapter?

Also, here are some of the first things we need to accomplish to get off the ground.  The formalities (application with National NORML etc) can wait.

  • Find like minded people to join the group- We have over 130 people invited to this group as of right now.  If even a quarter respond to the formation of the Tulsa chapter then we will be well on our way to getting a group established.  It is your job to increase those numbers and to invite your friends in family in Tulsa to join!
  • Establish a meeting time and place- Typically libraries, coffee shops, or friendly business's will be available to hold your regularly scheduled meetings.  It is important for the place to be easy to find, centrally located, and able to give you access regularly on the days needed.  It is very important to pick a date and time that never changes.  (Example: 1st Monday in every month @ 7pm)

I am interested in NORML for several reasons. I dont' like recreational marijuana users being classified as criminals. Hemp also has a very bright future medicaly and alot of potential for natural energy. My skills are that i am a hard worker and a people person. I think one of the Tulsa public library's would be a suitable spot for a meeting.

Great reasons!  What is your name blaf...@cox.net?

Is there a centrally located library that would be easy to get to from anywhere?

Or would it be best to hold 2 monthly meetings in different locations to accommodate more people?  Let me know, I am not from Tulsa and am unfamiliar with its layout.

"Why are you interested in NORML and what are your areas of skill that
could be beneficial to your local NORML chapter?"

I find it ridiculous and offensive that a person can be sent to jail
for smoking, ingesting, possessing or distributing a dried plant that
generally has no harmful effects (unless you count mild inebriation,
in which case you are a hypocrite if you support marijuana prohibition
do not also support the equal or more strict prohibition of alcohol)
and arguably has several beneficial effects. I have tired of local and
national leaders comparing the use and sale of marijuana to the use
and sale of crack cocaine, methamphetamines, and other so-called
"hard" drugs, even going so far as to indicate that people who buy and
sell marijuana are supporting terrorism (the latter is an argument I
have not heard for a while, but I somewhat doubt we have seen the last
of it). I'm sure everyone reading this has heard these arguments as
well as others, and stated far more eloquently as well. I think that
the arguments supporting the legalization of marijuana are far more
logical and compassionate than those supporting its prohibition, and
that is why I am interested in NORML.

As for my skills, not really sure what may be useful... I am not
entirely new to activism, though I have always stayed in the
background. I am not a people person (although I do alright with
kids). I do have excellent time management and proofreading skills (as
long as its not my own writing I'm proofreading). I have somewhat
rusty programming skills in HTML, PHP, and mySQL, and can use most
web, office, and graphics software with a reasonable amount of
competency on Windows, Mac, and Linux (help put together website,
flyers, etc...). And, I'm told I bake well, so I suppose I could bring
cookies or similar to meetings, as long as whichever venue we use
doesn't mind. Peace!

Once I became aware of Jack Herer's works, and the message he was
trying to get out, i knew that something had to be done. I've been a
private user for about 2 years, which was no problem living in
california. Now that I'm living in Tulsa now, I feel the need to
educate people on the whole plant, not just the benefits of the
elevation involved from smoking. Law reform definitely needs to take
place, but before people are willing stand up and say something, they
need the correct information...

Currently I am a Graphic Designer at a sign shop. First off that
allows me the skills to design flyers or anything else that may need
designing. It also allows me to print banners, stickers, signs, at
basically cost (depending on size of order). I graduated college
recently with a degree in Multimedia Production, from which i can:
shoot and edit video, design websites (dreamweaver/flash), record
audio. Generally when it comes to media, i'll find a way to make it
happen. I really don't want to toot my own horn too much, but this
the first time i've set my mind to be an involved activist, and i just
want to go at it with as much gusto as i can muster.

If it wasn't for your booth at Reggae Fest Tulsa, I most likely would
have just continued my life as usual, so thank you for piquing my
interest, and starting something in me that needed to be set on fire.

There is no denying that the current marijuana laws need to be
changed. I would like to help any way possible to facilitate a NORML
chapter in Tulsa. My best quaility is that I'm a people person.

My name is Ben Lafitte. there is a centrally located library that everyone should b able make it to. We should ask the people at the first meeting if they want it at two different locations. But if we get enough interest it would probably be better to have two different meetings at different locations.

I think that the Shusterman-Benson Library is the perfect location for the NORML meeting. It is in mid-Tulsa and therefore it being in MidTulsa, it is in the middle of everything.

here is some hardcore HEMP 101 we should know about and use in our debates to support ganja:

ALL PLASTIC PRODUCTS SHOULD BE MADE FROM HEMP SEED OIL
Hempen plastics are biodegradable! Over time, they would break down and not harm the environment. Oil-based plastics, the ones we are very familiar with, help ruin nature; they do not break down and will do great harm in the future. The process to produce the vast array of natural (hempen) plastics will not ruin the rivers as Dupont and other petrochemical companies have done. Ecology does not fit in with the plans of the Oil Industry and the political machine. Hemp products are safe and natural.

MEDICINES SHOULD BE MADE FROM HEMP
We should go back to the days when the AMA supported cannabis cures. 'Medical Marijuana' is given out legally to only a handful of people while the rest of us are forced into a system that relies on chemicals. Pot is only healthy for the human body.

WORLD HUNGER COULD END
A large variety of food products can be generated from hemp. The seeds contain one of the highest sources of protein in nature. ALSO: They have two essential fatty acids that clean your body of cholesterol. These essential fatty acids are not found anywhere else in nature! Consuming pot seeds is the best thing you could do for your body. Eat uncooked hemp seeds.

CLOTHES SHOULD BE MADE FROM HEMP
Hemp clothing is extremely strong and durable over time. You could hand clothing, made from pot, down to your grandchildren. Today, there are American companies that make hemp clothing; usually 50% hemp. Hemp fabrics should be everywhere. Instead, they are almost underground. Superior hemp products are not allowed to advertise on fascist television.

Kentucky, once the top hemp producing state, made it ILLEGAL TO WEAR hemp clothing! Can you imagine being thrown into jail for wearing quality jeans?

The world is crazy...but that does not mean you have to join the insanity. Get together. Spread the news. Tell people, and that includes your children, the truth. Use hemp products. Eliminate the word 'marijuana.' Realize the history that created it. Make it politically incorrect to say or print the M-word. Fight against the propaganda (designed to favor the agenda of the super rich) and the bullshit. Hemp must be utilized in the future. We need a clean energy source to save our planet.

INDUSTRIALIZE HEMP!

The liquor, tobacco and oil companies fund more than a million dollars a day to Partnership for a Drug-Free America and other similar agencies. We have all seen their commercials. Now, their motto is: ‘It's more dangerous than we thought.’ Lies from the powerful corporations, that began with Hearst, are still alive and well today.

The brainwashing continues. Now, the commercials say: If you buy a joint, you contribute to murders and gang wars. The latest anti-pot commercials say: If you buy a joint...you are promoting TERRORISM! The new enemy (terrorism) has paved the road to brainwash you any way THEY see fit.

There is only one enemy; the friendly people you pay your taxes to; the war-makers and nature destroyers. With your funding, they are killing the world right in front of your eyes. HALF A MILLION DEATHS EACH YEAR ARE CAUSED BY TOBACCO. HALF A MILLION DEATHS EACH YEAR ARE CAUSED BY ALCOHOL. NO ONE HAS EVER, EVER DIED FROM SMOKING POT!! In the entire history of the human race, not one death can be attributed to cannabis. Our society has outlawed grass but condones the use of the KILLERS: TOBACCO and ALCOHOL. Hemp should be declassified and placed in DRUG stores to relieve stress. Hardening and constriction of the arteries are bad; but hemp usage actually enlarges the arteries...which is a healthy condition. We have been so conditioned to think that: Smoking is harmful. That is NOT the case for passive pot.

Ingesting THC, hemp's active agent, has a positive effect; relieving asthma and glaucoma. A joint tends to alleviate the nausea caused by chemotherapy. You are able to eat on hemp. This is a healthy state of being.

{One personal note: During the pregnancy of my wife, she was having some difficulty gaining weight. We were in the hospital. A nurse called us to one side and said: ‘Off the record, if you smoke pot...you'd get something called the munchies and you’ll gain weight.' I swear that is a true story}.

The stereotype for a pothead is similar to a drunk, bubble-brain. Yet, the truth is one’s creative abilities can be enhanced under its influence. The perception of time slightly slows and one can become more sensitive. You can more appreciate all arts; be closer to nature and generally FEEL more under the influence of cannabis. It is, in fact, the exact opposite state of mind and body as the drunken state. You can be more aware with pot.

The pot plant is an ALIEN plant. There is physical evidence that cannabis is not like any other plant on this planet. One could conclude that it was brought here for the benefit of humanity. Hemp is the ONLY plant where the males appear one way and the females appear very different, physically! No one ever speaks of males and females in regard to the plant kingdom because plants do not show their sexes; except for cannabis. To determine what sex a certain, normal, Earthly plant is: You have to look internally, at its DNA. A male blade of grass (physically) looks exactly like a female blade of grass. The hemp plant has an intense sexuallity. Growers know to kill the males before they fertilize the females. Yes, folks...the most potent pot comes from 'horny females.

The reason this amazing, very sophisticated, ET plant from the future is illegal has nothing to do with how it physically affects us…..

…POT IS ILLEGAL BECAUSE BILLIONAIRES WANT TO REMAIN BILLIONAIRES!

ps: I think the word ‘DRUGS’ should not be used as an umbrella-word that covers all chemical agents. Drugs have come to be known as something BAD. Are you aware there are LEGAL drugstores?! Yep, in every city. Unbelievable. Each so-called drug should be considered individually. Cannabis is a medicine and not a drug. We should DARE to speak the TRUTH no matter what the law is.

Great welcoming emails so far everyone.  All this diversity and passion is exactly the thing an organization like NORML needs!

What does everyone think about the Shusterman-Benson Library as a meeting location?  It only has one meeting room that holds 66 (which should be plenty)  Can someone find out when their room is available for regular meetings?

To use the meeting room at the Shusterman-Benson Library we will need
to submit a form. Then they will look over it and give us available
dates in which we could use the room. Also once the form is turned in
we can book additional rooms. We can take this route or try for
something that may be more flexible. The form is at the library or on
the web.

I am very excited for the first NORML meetings! When are we thinking
about having our first meeting? Another library if the Schusterman-
Benson library doesnt work out would be the Hardesty library. I know
its a little far south (93rd Memorial) but it is a really big, and a
nice library.
They have some meeting rooms they use for classes so I'm sure those
would work but the need to check their maximum capacity.

I am interested in NORML to try and get information out there to
ignorant people that believe all the wrong things about the use of pot
smoking. Its sad when I go to a doctor and they actually suggest I
smoke for stomach and sleeping problems but then I can get arrested
for it. I just hope to open a few minds out there.

Right now it is set to where people can request a membership or I (admin) can invite them.

Is everyone ok with me opening it up to where members can invite others?

I was weary of the list to getting out of hand etc with people outside of Tulsa-area etc.. BUT it is up to you guys of course.

Let me know and I can change it.
