The X Factor UK Season 11: A Recap

The eleventh season of The X Factor UK, a popular British television music competition, aired on ITV from 30 August to 14 December 2014. It featured four judges: Simon Cowell, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Mel B and Louis Walsh. The show was hosted by Dermot O'Leary, while Sarah-Jane Crawford presented the spin-off show The Xtra Factor on ITV2.

The season consisted of several stages: room auditions, arena auditions, bootcamp, judges' houses and live shows. The contestants were divided into four categories: Boys (mentored by Mel B), Girls (mentored by Fernandez-Versini), Groups (mentored by Walsh) and Over 26s (mentored by Cowell). The winner of the season was Ben Haenow, a van driver from Croydon, who beat Fleur East, a singer from Walthamstow, in the final with 57.2% of the votes. Haenow's debut single, a cover of OneRepublic's "Something I Need", was released after the final and became the Christmas number one in the UK.

The season was notable for several reasons: it was the first time that the lower age limit was decreased from 16 to 14 since series 5; it marked the return of Cowell and Fernandez-Versini (formerly Cole) to the judging panel after three and four years respectively; it was the first and only series to feature Mel B as a judge; it was the last series for O'Leary as the main show host and Crawford as The Xtra Factor presenter; and it was also the last series for Walsh as a judge before he returned in series 13.

The season received mixed reviews from critics and viewers, who praised some of the contestants and performances, but criticised the format changes, the judging decisions and the lack of originality. The ratings for the season were also lower than previous seasons, averaging 8.65 million viewers per episode.

Some of the memorable contestants and performances from the season include: Andrea Faustini, a 20-year-old student from Rome, Italy, who impressed the judges with his powerful vocals and his love for pugs; Lauren Platt, a 16-year-old student from Essex, who was praised for her maturity and versatility; Stevi Ritchie, a 34-year-old call centre worker from Colchester, who entertained the audience with his cheesy and comedic acts; and Stereo Kicks, an eight-piece boy band formed by the judges at bootcamp, who struggled with their identity and cohesion.

The season also featured some controversies and scandals, such as: the elimination of Chloe Jasmine, a 24-year-old model and singer from London, who was accused of faking her posh accent and having a privileged background; the return of Jake Quickenden, a 26-year-old singer from Scunthorpe, who was eliminated in judges' houses in series 9 and auditioned again in series 11; the live performance of Stereo Kicks being interrupted by a stage invader; the health issues of Mel B, who missed the first part of the final due to a mystery illness and was replaced by former judge Tulisa as a guest judge; and the accusations of fixing and manipulation by the producers and the judges.

The season was followed by a live tour, which featured the top eight finalists: Haenow, East, Faustini, Platt, Ritchie, Stereo Kicks, Only The Young and Jay James. The tour visited 14 venues across the UK and Ireland from 13 February to 19 March 2015. The season also spawned several music releases by the contestants, such as: Haenow's self-titled debut album, which peaked at number 10 on the UK Albums Chart; East's debut single "Sax", which reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart; Faustini's debut album Kelly, which debuted at number 14 on the UK Albums Chart; and Stereo Kicks' debut single "Love Me So", which charted at number 31 on the UK Singles Chart.
