Fall 2012
Dear Faculty and Colleagues,
Are any of your students interested in the growing movements for social
and economic justice in New York City and around the world? At CUNY’s
Murphy Institute, we offer two unique programs that provide students with
tools for leadership, scholarship, and advocacy: New York Union Semester
and the Masters of Arts Degree in Labor Studies .
New York Union Semester offers a mentored internship for graduates and
undergraduates at a labor union or other worker organization. Interns
receive :
· A weekly stipend
· In-state tuition and a scholarship for labor studies courses
· An unlimited-ride MetroCard and
· 12 graduate or 16 undergraduate credits as well as a Certificate in
Labor Studies from the CUNY School of Professional Studies
In the Masters in Labor Studies program, students examine history, current
debates and complex challenges affecting working people and unions from an
interdisciplinary perspective. This is an ideal degree for students
interested in advocacy, non-profit or social justice work; union members;
and graduate students with a research interest in labor. The Masters
program offers:
· evening, weekend, and summer classes in midtown Manhattan
· internships
· comprehensive academic resources and
· financial aid
Please inform your students and colleagues about these programs. Attached
is a flyer. Feel free to post or forward it. Let us know if you would like
additional materials.
Students can learn more about and access applications for these and other
Murphy Institute academic opportunities at
