Earth Rights International has a new opening for a Teacher in Thailand working with human rights and environmental activists from countries of the golden triangle. The DEADLINE is JANUARY 6th, 2014. This is a great opportunity for ISDSI graduates interested in returning to Northern Thailand to do meaningful work! Their listing follows:
Title: Teacher, EarthRights Schools (ERS)
Date Prepared: December 2013
Reports to: ERS Program Coordinators (ERS Myanmar & Mekong)
Purpose: To design, develop and deliver teaching and support to human rights and environmental activists from Myanmar and the Mekong countries who speak English as a second language.
Job Responsibilities:
Teaching & Curriculum Development
- Teach ERS courses to 14 -16 adult mixed level students
- Assist in developing curriculum for ERS and partner schools
- Provide English language support through written feedback on writing assignments including; essays, research reports, funding proposals, and other texts
- Teach public speaking, presentation skills, report and proposal writing courses
- Teach other courses as needed
- Coordinate current affairs reading comprehension sessions on request
- Organize resources and teaching materials relevant to ERS course areas
- Manage a centralized collection of curricula and lesson plans for ERS
Student Mentoring
- Serve as an adviser for students during their studies
- Advise students outside of class, depending on their individual needs and concerns
- Accompany students to occasional cultural and educational events in Chiang Mai
Organizational/Administrative Duties
- Work closely with teaching assistant as well as coordinators in teaching, curriculum development, and assessment of students’ progress and needs
- Plan and coordinate evening homework session for the students living at the school
- Submit regular reports updating the coordinator and director
- Participate in staff project meetings as required
Selection Criteria:
- Relevant teaching experience of at least two years with non-native English speakers
- Bachelors and/or advanced degree in human rights, political science, peace studies, international development, law, or related fields
- Relevant experience in lesson planning and curriculum development
- Minimum of two years of experience in human rights education
- Familiar with a variety of subjects including; human rights, conflict resolution, the environment, law, government, woman’s rights, corporate accountability, and the international political system
- Strong human rights report writing and research skills required (ability to present complex information in a manner that is clear and easy to understand)
- Awareness of the human rights and environmental challenges currently facing Myanmar and the Mekong region
- Experience living and working in a multi-cultural setting
