Customizing the \thanks output

Hi,

I'm a relatively new LaTeX user, and was wondering if there's a way to customize the behavior of the \thanks command in the title block of the handout class. Specifically, I'd like to make two changes:

Place the sidenote produced by \thanks at the bottom of the first page, rather than the top; and
Use an asterisk or other symbol as the sidenote mark for \thanks instead of it being one of the numbered sidenotes in the rest of the text.
