build error on sample-book.tex with \maketitle

I tried building sample-book.tex and get this error:

ERROR: Math formula deleted: Insufficient symbol fonts.

From the .log file...

Sorry, but I can't typeset math unless \textfont 2
and \scriptfont 2 and \scriptscriptfont 2 have all
the \fontdimen values needed in math symbol fonts.

When I comment out \maketitle it builds.

I tried inserting some simple math in the body text and it built fine,
so the part about not being able to typeset math is baloney.

I'll let you know if I find a reason for it.

I found the thing that triggers this bug,
though not the reason for it.
It's in the definition for \author:

\author[The Tufte-LaTeX Developers]{The Tufte-\LaTeX\ Developers}

If you remove the backslash before LaTeX it will
work. Apparently the error has to do with
constructing the LaTeX macro. Something is
not loaded right here so that it probably
can't calculate the amount to raise and lower
the letters in the logo in this font. Seeing
the way it appears without that, this may
be a good thing in this case, but I wonder
what other things might break? Probably nothing
important.
