We all want the confidence that we can go out and feel safe that we
could, if necessary, defend ourselves in the most extreme
circumstances of being attacked by a knife or a gun. But there is a
big difference in "hoping" that we can do something and knowing it. To
know something, one must have proof. That which we want to prove, must
be validated.
We use validation unthinkingly in many, many area of our lives outside
of reality-based street fighting. You purchase with cash, a ticket at
the box office to go see a movie. At the entrance of the theater, your
purchase must be proven, that is, it must be validated by the show of
your ticket. You obtain a new remedy for a back pain. The label on the
box says "fast relief", but until you take the remedy and experience
the relief no validation has occurred.
When you learn a martial arts technique with the expectation that it
will be applicable in the real world, you must also validate the
technique.
How Does One Validate A Martial Arts Technique?
Let us take the example of a knife or a gun disarm. Validation could
happen if:

Your instructor uses "Air Soft" pistols that shoot out plastic orange
pellets. If you execute your maneuver and you are hit by the
discharged pellet, then, your technique did not work. If you perform
your maneuver, and you are not hit when the pistol discharges, then,
you have validated that technique as having worked correctly.
Your instructor takes out a plastic knife stained with red food
coloring. If you get stained with the red food coloring, then, you
"just got cut". If you disarm the knife without any red dye stains on
you, then, you performed your technique properly.

The 3 Reasons Why All Self Defense Maneuvers MUST Be "Validated" To Be
Realistic
Reason #1 - You Find Out If A Fighting Maneuver Really Works - Why
wait until it is too late to know if a technique works? Validate your
training, and eliminate any unpleasant surprises.
Reason #2 -Validation Acclimates You To The Real Fighting Experience -
When every technique you do is validated, you can be sure that you are
getting used to the real fighting experience.
Reason #3 - Validation Shows You Immediately Your Strengths And Your
Weaknesses - Validation practice helps you to hone in on improving
your skills and ability. You reduce unnecessary risks and increase
your total confidence. So, if you want to know if whatever you learn,
with whomever you learn, is realistic, then it absolutely MUST be
validated.
