I know there's a lot of spam in this group, but I'm hoping some people
are still out there and can help me. For the toasted-coconut custard
tart, Dorie calls for dark rum. Does anybody have a certain rum they
recommend, preferably one that comes in a small bottle?

Hey Carla,
yea there is a lot of spam, which is so unfortunate.  I think some of us are still out here baking away.  I have the same question although I have this huge bottle of spiced rum Captain somebody or other?  You can tell I really hit the bottle huh?  Lol  Anyway, when I need dark rum I use it but that is only because I have it on hand and can't justify yet another purchase to add to my burgeoning collection.  lol
Hope that helps.  However, I would love to know what others are using.

I pretty much always buy Captain Morgan's spiced rum.  I'm guessing that you might be able to get a smaller bottle of it at a liquor store perhaps.

Best,
Thayer

Appleton Estate Rum from Jamaica is really good, though I do not know if it comes in small bottles?

Really for baking I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference...

I don't have a favorite brand to recommend, but I do have a tip for
finding the small bottles. At a lot of stores, they keep them behind
the counter because the small bottles are so easily shoplifted. So,
ask at the counter -- maybe the clerk has a recommendation.

Thanks everyone! I read online somewhere that using dark rum has a
different taste than using a gold or light rum. That's why you often
see darm rum specified rather than just any old rum. I used a golden
Puerto Rico rum in a bread once, and honestly you can't tell. I'll
have to stop at the liquor store and ask.
