Ko Olina's Birds

One of the things I especially enjoy about my annual visits to Oahu is that EVERYTIME I go out to sit on my patio, EVERYONE of these eight birds flies up onto the grass in front of me to see what I'm going to feed them. It's amazing. Sometimes, if I'm sitting in the living room, the cardinals will come up to the patio sliding glass door and chirp like crazy for me to come out and feed them. 😂🥰

It's equally fun to observe their never changing behaviors. 

The mynas are the top of the pecking order, intimidating all of the other birds. They fly in, grab what they want, and fly off again with their treat. Interestingly though, they are the most cautious of the birds, never coming up closer than about 10 feet. 

Next are the plovers. Which will come up within about 5 feet, but aren't at all interested in my treats. They just stop on one foot for a few seconds, stare intensely, then dash a short distance and stoop down to grab a tiny bug, then repeat the same pattern over and over.

Next are the bulbuls, who come up within a foot or two, and mostly sit and chirp at me, until grabbing their food and flying off to a near by tree. Occasionally, one will come, land on the patio table next to my coffee and just stare at me with a periodic chirp.

Next are my all-time favorite cardinals, who ALWAYS arrive in pairs, and will come all the way up to me on the patio and almost, but not quite, eat out of my hand. They have the most personality of all of the birds, coming up close, cocking their head and chirping at me.

Next are the tiny zebra doves. They are at the bottom of the pecking order, and don't seem to mind the other birds getting first choice. Their advantage is that they are totally unafraid of me, and are the only ones who will walk all around my feet, happy to stay very close and enjoy the treats that the other birds are too flighty to come up to. They are also always in groups of 4 or 5, and unlike all of the other birds, nicely sharing with each other.

Last are the munias, waxbills, and Java sparrows. While always present, these tiny birds stay in their own separate groups, in and at the edges of the high grass about 30 feet from me. They are so light that they can cling to the individual stalks of grass while they eat the tiny grass seeds.

Aloha. This is Stan and we met back in June. I live on the Big Island but 15 to 20 years part time in Honolulu. You made no mention of Honolulu’s city bird, the fairy tern. I know you are in Ko’olina but I hope you get out to see this amazing bird. Have you been out to Kaena Point or Campbell Wildlife. There’s even a flock of parrots always around the palm trees near the State building and the State library. But I’m glad to see the birds that you are seeing. Mahalo, 🤙🏽🤪

Hi Stan. Yes!  I've been into Honolulu on previous visits and saw the wonderful Manu o Ku. 

I've also made several hikes out to Kaena Point, but not Campbell Wildlife yet. I'll get up to the North Shore to check that out this trip.

Thanks, Randy, for the narrative.  It adds so much to the photos which are great.  It's wonderful how much enjoyment you get out of feeding birds - is there any particular mix that you use?  I am always happy to see birds at my feeders, especially when the oak titmouse or the chestnut-backed chickadee do their grab and go routine.  Sometimes I believe the house finches and lesser gold finches like to enjoy the moment at the feeder and stay there for some time. --hk

After looking @ your photos I wanted to add to the knowledge. First, the Red-crested cardinal with the brown head is a juvenile. You also have a Orange-cheeked Waxbill among the more Common Waxbills. Looking forward to what you may find in the higher locations like Tantulas or lower locations like the Kawainui Marsh area of Kailua. Much mahalo🤙🏽

I use black oil sunflower seeds on my platform feeder and Wagner's Wild Bird Seed in my tube feeder. At my Oakley, CA house, pretty much the only birds I get at my feeders are: lots of house finches, mourning doves, collared doves, scrub jay's, an occasional white crowned sparrow, and lots of anna's hummingbirds. I wish I could get some gold finches, trying nyjer seed, but no luck.
