to Tudumo help, tips and tricks
I would like to change the location that Tudumo saves/looks for the
data files. I expected a setting in the options menu, but alas...

Is this possible? If so, how?

Thank you.

Hi Randy,

Not yet, unless you install Tudumo to a directory outside of Program
Files, in which case it'll keep the data locally. Do you want it on a
network folder, or somewhere that will be backed up?

Regards,
Richard

There is a workaround way to do this using symbolic links or NTFS junctions as they are known in Windows. There are no built-in tools in Windows for managing these but junction, part of the SysInternals suite by Mark Russinovich is a small command-line utility that can be used to do so. Here is how you can achieve this using the junction utility on Windows 7 (path names may differ on Vista or XP but other than that it's the same).
  1. Make sure that Tudumo is not running.
  2. Move your C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Tudumo folder to the location of your choice, D:\Data\Tudumo for instance.
  3. Create a junction that links the old standard location to the new one you chose.

    junction C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Tudumo D:\Data\Tudumo

This creates a junction at the original location, that points at the new location. If you look at C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Tudumo in Windows Explorer you will see that it contains all the files it did before, only now they are physically located at the location of your choosing. In WIndows 7 you will see that the folder representing the junction has a shortcut overlay on its icon.
When you run Tudumo now it will happily continue to believe that its files are where they always were but files will actually be read from and saved to the new location you chose.

I have been successfully using this technique for several months, allowing me to put my Tudumo data in my Dropbox folder so it is synchronised between my work and home desktops, as well as my laptop. The only problem I have, and this applies only for my use of Dropbox, is that I can't have Tudumo autostart as I need to wait for the Dropbox synchronisation to finish after logging in, before I run Tudumo, or file locking problems may occur.

Or, if you prefer a GUI for creating junctions, Link Shell Extension is very good:

Saving the files in Dropbox is exactly what I wanted to be able to do and junctions sound like an OK solution.  Obviously, I think a simple setting in the options menu would be better for the average user, but this will work for me.

Thanks!
