Da Vinci demonstrated the motion of a horse in his sketches. By the 1877 Edweard Muybridge had begun his experiments demonstrating motion with photography. Soon after Thomas Eakins would do same using human sports as his model. Early in the 20th Century Picasso and Braque would present a feeling of pictured dynamism with their experiments in Cubism. Just a few years later in 1912 Marcel Duchamp would follow up on their Cubist experiments with his Nude Descending a Staircase. Cubism demonstrated the ability of painting to suggest movement through repeated planar abstraction.

In my previous blog post discussing momentum I presented some heavily Photoshop altered photographs of the exterior of Grand Central Station and, an approach to the Brooklyn Bridge. These are reprised here in examples 3 and 4. The next examples 5 and 6 demonstrate how this information was further altered and developed in oil paint. Observe how I reverberate lines and edges through flawed repetition and ambiguous blurring. I am not interested in faithful transcriptions of the photos only to use them as springboards to further exploration.

Finally, I bring you up to date on the development of my most recent Brooklyn Bridge painting. Initially the painting began as you see in example 7. Currently the painting appears as you see it in example 8, with more emphasis on reverberation and motion.

Paola Egonu was on fire midweek as Imoco Volley Conegliano swept their pool to become the first team to claim a berth in the quarterfinals of the European Champions League. The 22-year-old opposite carried on the momentum back to the Italian Women's League over the weekend, as Conegliano put an end to Saugella Monza's run with a majestic 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 27-25) win on the road.

It was Conegliano's fifth win in as many matches over the last eight days and extends their overall winning streak across all competitions and seasons to 46 matches while retaining a perfect record of full points after 20 matches in the Italian League.

Monza, who themselves had played in Europe during the week, earning a spot in the semifinals of the second-tier European CEV Cup, saw their own overall run of 16-0; they had not lost since 24 October 2020 when they last met Conegliano.

Egonu got 21 kills from 31 swings for an attacking efficiency of 68% on Saturday evening, earning the MVP of the match award. She added one block for a total match high of 22 points. Conegliano teammate Raphaela Folie (registering five blocks in her first appearance of 2021) and Monza's Lise Van Hecke with 12 points each were the only other players in the match to score in double digits.

Novara were powered by MVP of the match Haleigh Washington plus Britt Herbots who scored 15 points (including 3 aces) and Caterina Bosetti who added another 14 (with 12/16 in attack for 75%), though top scorer of the match was Scandicci's Magdalena Stysiak with 16 points.

"The resiliency of the Jeremiah's concept has been clear throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, which has positioned us for even further growth in 2021," stated Nicole DiPietro, vice president of Jeremiah's Italian Ice. "Our continued success has attracted a lot of new franchise partners, and we are eager to build on the momentum we built in 2020 and share our delicious Italian Ice and Soft Ice Cream with new communities across the country."

In addition to its increased growth projections for 2021, Jeremiah's Italian Ice is announcing that it will be serving its famous Italian Ice and Soft Ice Cream at eight different events at the Daytona International Speedway this coming year.

"We are always looking for new and exciting ways to enhance the fan experience at all the events we host here at World Center of Racing," said Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile. "We already know about the delicious treats at Jeremiah's Italian Ice because they have a location at One Daytona, across the street from the speedway. They are a great addition to the already incredible lineup of food offerings and we are excited about the partnership."

To continue its growth momentum despite a national pandemic, Jeremiah's quickly pivoted to a virtual Discovery Day format in just under two weeks early in the year. This quick adaptation allowed the brand to award 20 new units in March and April of 2020 at the pandemic's onset, as well as to surpass its number of units awarded in the previous year.

"Our ability to adapt our processes during COVID-19 has prepared us for further success in 2021," added Cameron Cummins, Co-Founder of Pivotal Growth Partners and Chief Development Officer for Jeremiah's Italian Ice. "Throughout 2020, the Jeremiah's Italian Ice model continued to prove why it is a frozen force to be reckoned with in the QSR space, and that has positioned us for additional growth and development."

This paper investigates the source of momentum profits, while inferring the validity of the assumptions underlying rational and behavioural theories. Using a unique sample of securities listed in the Italian Stock Exchange from 1950 to 1995, we observe that buying better performing stocks in the previous 3-12 months and selling worse performing stocks over the same period yields significant profits in the short term (less than 1 year). Results also hold when conditioned upon different risk specifications. On the other hand, the continuation effect seems to significantly revert over a longer period. More importantly, in contrast with Conrad and Kaul [Rev. Financ. Stud. 11 (1998) 489], bootstrap and Monte Carlo simulations show that momentum profits are more likely to be generated by stock returns time series properties rather than by their cross-sectional differences. While the overall findings cannot reject the market efficiency hypothesis, we argue that behavioural theory may be a possible story to interpret the continuation effect.

Jeremiah's Italian Ice will open 35 new locations in Texas, Georgia, Florida and North Carolina, as well as open its first locations in Louisiana and Colorado in the year ahead, according to a news release. This is a 250% increase from 10 stores the company opened last year.

"The resiliency of the Jeremiah's concept has been clear throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, which has positioned us for even further growth in 2021," Nicole DiPietro, vice president of Jeremiah's Italian Ice, said in the release. To help guide the brand's rapid expansion, Jeremiah's Italian Ice partnered with Pivotal Growth Partners, as well.

Jeremiah's Italian Ice awarded a total of 101 units across 35 franchisee groups in 2020. Jeremiah's has been able to continue its rapid growth pace by signing 21 multi-unit agreements throughout 2020. In addition to the 101 units awarded to franchisees, Jeremiah's also awarded an additional 162 units among six area representative groups, which will help the brand expand its presence in states including Louisiana, Georgia, and North Carolina, among others.
