There are plenty of anime that feature unassuming humans who are suddenly paired together with a supernatural partner or even become a hybrid of man and beast themselves. Parasyte -the maxim-,however, is the only one that feels like it could be an unofficial sequel to The Thing. Aliens have invaded the planet with the goal to gradually subjugate the entire human race. Shinichi Izumi is a run of the mill highschooler who finds himself bonded with one of these parasitic monsters who takes up residence living inside his hand. Shinichi and his alien parasite try to root out and eliminate the rest of these predatory species and the result is an amazing hybrid of mystery and action with constant body horror thrown in for good measure. There are hundreds of different aliens featured in anime, but the threats in Parasyte will actually make stomachs churn. In addition to the disturbing visuals, Parasyte crafts a surprisingly emotional relationship between Shinichi and the alien living in his hand.

It also contains plenty of psychological horror, including a particularly unsettling moment where one character doubts whether or not another one actually exists.
What It's About: 16-year-old Yuri Honjo is trapped in a high-rise building filled with hundreds of locked doors. There's nobody around for miles, only a wide expanse of similar buildings. Her brother is somewhere in the building, but so is a cadre of masked murderers who could be anywhere.
Why Horror Fans Will Love It: If you like high-energy slasher films, this might appeal to you. Littered with intense acts of violence, it will definitely get your heart rate up. But it's not all blood and guts. There are times when it's full of mystery and intrigue. Oh, and there's plenty of fan service too, so if that's your thing, this might be too.
What It's About: A teenage boy named Light Yagami finds a notebook dropped by a Shinigami. He soon learns that writing a person's name in the book while picturing their face will cause that person to die. He decides to use the notebook to eliminate crime and establish himself as a god. Why Horror Fans Will Love It: From the presence of death gods to the endless series of lives that Light takes, there's a lot of frightening content in this series. There's kidnapping, torture, and psychological manipulation - pretty much anything you could want. But one could argue that the scariest part is what happens to Light's mind. He goes from being a well-meaning but misinformed kid to a power-mad young adult who destroys his own life. It's a rough series, but it's a classic for a reason.

Pretty much the only thing that doesn't always work about this anime is the CGI animation, which some fans enjoy while others don't.
