IfI'm wanting to paint both the time and the grout (not the same color), which do I do first? My kitchen backsplash is a brown/tan mixture and nothing else (including the granite countertops) match it.

Have you ever had a residue remain on the tiles? Maybe the tiles were not wiped quickly enough but a residue was left which picks up dirt easily and is not removed with my steam cleaner. Any suggestions besides scraping with my nails?

If I have extra paint left on the tiles, I just scrap it off with something plastic. Do you have something that's sort of like a plastic spatula that you use to cook with? A plastic tool of that type works great to scrape off excess dried tile paint from the tiles.

For starters, it eliminates a lot of time and effort spent measuring out your powder and liquid additive, stirring it together, and adjusting until you get the right consistency. Instead, you can just pop open a tub and get going.

It only really works with larger tiles, but after I applied the grout with my float and did a couple wipe downs with my damp sponge, I let it sit for another 5-10 minutes and then I used a rag or paper towel to dry just the surface of the tile, being sure not to rub the grout lines themselves. It sounds more tedious than it was, because it really was only one quick swipe (almost like washing a window pane) and it basically wiped up all of the liquid that would eventually become grout haze.

Putting aside fears of grouting the wall tiles, I can say that I am in love with my retro pink tiled floor. The dark grout looks fabulous, and really does allow the light colored tiles to stand out and shine.

Thanks so much for this posting. Can you comment on there being a need to set the tiles in an epoxy adhesive (I.e. thinset) or will any type of adhesive for initial set suffice to be followed by the actual grouting with epoxy?

The floor looks great and has that vintage appearance. My issue is the color of the grout. It may (again) just be the digital reproduction and monitor, but, from eye level, the grout appears to be brown and imparts a brown hue to the tile.

The purpose of this blog has always been to share the very best homemaking tips that can help you save money and time. So when I started seeing all sorts of amazing claims about Zep Grout Cleaner on social media and around the web, I knew I had to find out if it was really worth the hype so I could pass that information along to you!

This viral TikTok video initially brought my attention to Zep Grout Cleaner. After reading up on the product online, I came across plenty of rave reviews from Amazon customers who had tried it in their bathrooms, including these:

If your grout has been sealed, you may need to remove the sealer with a strong stripper before using Zep to avoid uneven cleaning results. This can be quite the chore, but it would be worth the effort in the long run!

And finally, although Zep works wonderfully on ceramic tile and grout lines, it should NOT be used on marble, terrazzo, travertine, natural stone, chrome, stainless steel, brass, or Corian. Better safe than sorry!

For the next set of tiles, I had to pull out the good ole wet saw. I turned the 2 sheets of tiles upside down and lined them up with the appropriate spacing between them. I marked on both ends the height I wanted to cut them at. Then I used a yardstick to connect the marks and give myself a straight line to cut along. (I used the same technique and wet saw for my fireplace hearth.)

The instructions on the glitter flakes assumed you were using the same brand of grout. And premixed grout at that. So I had to make it up as I went. According to their ratio, I over-glittered my grout. Not that you could tell in my bucket.

Regarding the faucet rings, I used the angled nozzle and scrub brush attachment to test the area. The scrub brush attachment performed marvelously, effortlessly loosening up gunk with minimal effort or scrubbing on my part. It did require a few minutes to thoroughly clean, and I had to refill the tank a second time since the steam only lasts about five to 10 minutes when the trigger is continuously held down. Nevertheless, it was completely worthwhile, considering my sink has finally received the proper care and attention it deserves.

In the kitchen, I was particularly interested in sanitizing and cleaning the grout lines connecting the counter to the backsplash and the faucet ring on the sink. Starting with the grout, the steam took approximately 30 seconds to one minute to effectively loosen the random gunk. And let me assure you, the area was completely black before using the Steam Shot. However, after the Steam Shot treatment, it nearly returned to its original white color.

In the past, these tough-to-sanitize surfaces normally required considerable elbow grease and chemical cleaner to loosen up. Since the Bissell Steam Shot uses pressurized steam, my household surfaces get clean twice as fast without breaking out the heavy-duty chemicals.

While the tool comes with multiple attachments, including a fabric steamer, I only recommend using this feature to sanitize windows. Since I use the Bissell Steam Shot on rather gross areas in my home, it feels unsanitary to use the fabric steamer on clothes or upholstery. All the other attachments are incredibly helpful for reaching every nook and cranny around the home.

My GC asked me to pick a grout color for the honed marble backsplash and he highly recommend Fusion unsanded grout for 1/16". However, multiple website has really bad reviews on this brand. My GC said that's because people don't know how to use it. Does anyone has good experience with Fusion grout? If not, which brand of grout is good for honed marble backsplash? Thanks in advance!

The key is preparation. You need to seal the tile first. Then clean tile, let it dry, wet the tile face before grouting. Do a small section at a time, wipe the tile with a wet sponge then go over it one more time with a microfiber covered sponge in clean water.

At the beginning of my professional service, I realized getting tile and grout cleaning reviews was the best way to prove to others how good I really was. There have been many sources from which I obtain reviews both good and bad.

I really run an unusual business where I take the first call, ask for the estimate and work on the same day. I like killing 2 birds with one stone. Most people like the idea, but some folks override what I say on the phone and really want an estimate.

I am thinking of using Tec's power grout in their dove gray color in my shower with my 4x8 subway tiles. Has anyone used their power grout? I haven't been able to find many unbiased reviews. It sounds great but I'm not sure if I want to risk it without being familiar with it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

We had our master shower done in TEC Power Grout (I think it's birch) last April. I did use a penetrating sealer on it, just because I wanted belt and suspenders both. I LOVE IT. I have done one light cleaning since then, but no grout scrubbing (plus cleaning the glass shower door periodically). No mold or mildew anywhere! (I would have cleaned more if there had been anything that needed it...)

Even other grout that I have sealed in the past has never stayed this clean. Seriously, 8-9 months without scrubbing grout?! And no, we do not squeegee or dry the shower walls and floor after every shower. We squeegee the door and that's it. My tile setter says Power Grout is all he uses these days. I really don't notice any difference in texture from other sanded grouts. I'm getting ready to use unsanded Power Grout on my kitchen backsplash that I'm doing myself. Not sure why others are having such different results. We live in a humid climate, too, and had mildew issues in that shower previously.

But then I noticed, right behind and below my granddaughter, a section of grout in the tile floor that was defective. A significant amount of grout was missing from the joint. I soon discovered no fewer than 20 other random places in the tile floor throughout the house where grout was degrading.

Further inspection of the defects shows that they are random: Some are adjacent to bearing points of the floor trusses, and others can be found midspan of a few trusses. If the grout were failing just at midspan, you might make a compelling argument that the floor trusses have just enough flex to crack the grout.

Tiny crystals in the Portland cement in the grout start to grow. As more and more crystals grow, the grout gets stiff and eventually gets as hard as a rock. After all, all the components in standard sanded floor grout are all rock except for the water.

If excess water gets on the wet floor grout, it can dilute the amount of the Portland cement in the grout in those random areas where the water soaks into or puddles on the wet grout. I show exactly how to install perfect floor grout in my four-video series. If you plan to lay tile, I suggest you go watch them on askthebuilder.com.

This is the second time we have used Sir Grout, and we are thrilled with the results. We even had them come out and fix some things another company applied poorly. They are kind, fast, efficient, and reasonably priced.

The walls in our pre-war bathroom in Manhattan are entirely tile, and the floor has the original 1930 tile. 2 Sir Grout people came to replace the grout from the old tile wall and clean the vintage floor. AMAZING! Wonderful job from great people who worked so hard and finished the job in a day. My only regret is we didn't do this years ago. I will not wait so long next time! THANK YOU for the GREAT JOB!
