Jonathan and Scott, you both make very good points. However, I feel
that the pantyhose are symbolic, standing for something that Dobbins
can believe in while serving in Vietnam. While serving, "Dobbins felt
the pull of superstition, and he believed firmly and absolutely in the
protective power of the stockings" (112). The pantyhose serve as an
item that Dobbins can believe in while placed in a situation where
there isn't much hope. This hope, despite being in a flimsy pair of
pantyhose, helps to keep him focused and alive.
