Hi energy people, there's a bit of chat going on (see below) about exploring hydro potential of the valleys - what do you think? Does anyone have the energy for some energy projects?

Hi Dave,
Would you forward this to the Energy Group as was....

Hi Martin

Im currently studying an MSc degree in renewable energy technologies at Loughborough University (http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/el/research/centres/crest/) and am working with both Julian and Ossie Goring on hydro projects, including the Canals trust project. There is a lot more potential in Stroud to expand on hydro and other forms of renewable if the community willingness is there to do so. I know Julian would welcome more engagement with TTS and has apparently been trying to engage for a while......

Cheers

Arun

Dear Arun and other enthusiasts
Agreed - I think we could renew focus on this. We did have a group, but this was replaced by the group specifically attached to Bisley Parish Council, that has been pretty active. There are some hydro initiatives in the valleys (e.g. the District Council Offices and the Canals Trust) and expertise with Ozzy Goring and Julian - but not formally part of TS. Wind maybe has even more potential - I am trying to make community turbines easier in planning rules in the AONB in the new Council Core Strategy - a slow business!.
Maybe it would be good to see if there is sufficient interest for a TS energy group?

I was wondering whether there was a sustainable energy group as part of Stroud TT? I would have thought that sustainable energy would be a major focus of any TT group.

There is a lot of scope for hydropower in the Stroud valleys which also has an added benefit of flood control, biodiversity, fisheries etc .... was wondering if this had ever been explored?

I'm preoccupied with trying to get my PC Techniques business up to a better level of activity, anyone need a visit?

Once this is better I am more than happy to give free time to this.

Hi

I'm sure many people recall that a study on Hydro potential in the Stroud Valleys was done many years ago by Jackie Carpenter (HEBE consultancy) under the auspices of Vision 21.  Probabably someone in SDC has a copy.

What could be interesting is to see how the re-opening of the canal changes things

Cheers

The report Martin referes to can be viewed here - wow 1994 is almost 20 years ago and not a lot has happened
www.transitionstroud.org/documents/energy/Stroud_Valleys_Hydropower_Study_1994.pdf

It'd be good so see some local community energy projects happening but it's difficult stuff to make happen and mostly about organising and admin and managing money and not a lot about practical hands on fun stuff... that's pretty much why the energy group folded before - there's a lot of folks around who know about renewables and unfortunately also know how hard it is to get community projects off the ground.

However if there's some new energy for an energy group it'd be good to see it kick off again. I'm definitely not volunteering to coordinate it this time.

Hi everyone, a great deal was done by energy 21 to identify good sites, another publication I recall was called sustainable projects in Gloucestershire, but all this came to nothing. regards Brian

Why not speak to some people who are getting micro hydro going elsewhere, and see whether you can find some new energy, inspiration and insights?

Bath on the Avon:  http://www.bwce.coop/ I believe something planned for Batheaston?  Peter Capener is probably your best contact.
Bristol council:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-16616990 story that was in the news yesterday, Neil Harrison looks like the best person to contact.

I'm not volunteering to coordinate the energy group either.  ;-)

Working as a tutor for Ruskin Mill, I was thrilled when they put in a water turbine at their old water wheel.  It weorked for a short while and has now for a year been unoperational.  I think they are waiting for a part??  I will ask around.  This is very dissappointing and makes me more attracted to WIND.                            christoph

CSE has a useful video on how to evaluate a micro hydro project, directed at local groups.  It's very practical.  You will know the engineering facts of course - the valuable thing here is that they provide a clear process to follow.

Best wishes,
Julia

Incidentally, some of you might be interested in a talk about one farmer's experience of wind turbines and planning on Wednesday evening next week.

If you're not going to make it, but you'd like to be kept in touch, let me know and I will put you on the mailing list - it's very low volume, as I only send out an average of 1-2 messages a month (it's just for announcements).

It's a bit of a hike down the A46 to us, but if you carpooled it could be good fun - and it's a very nice pub.  The meeting should be very interesting.  Ed is a local farmer, a young guy from a family that's farmed there for generations.  He's very pragmatic and straightforward.  At least one person with a successful wind turbine application will be coming along, and it seems to be generating quite a wide interest.

I hope to see some of you there!  Please pass this on to anyone you think would be interested.

Julia
