Dear all

Leaflet attached.  Its A4 and folds into 3.  It needs to be printed both sides.  The section with the heading TRANSITION TOWNS is the first section to view.

I don’t have a lot of time to faff around with this.  If anyone has any major objections/amendments, let me know ASAP.  I’ve no doubt forgotten something important!  Going to CAT Sunday am, back Wednesday am.

Good leaflet - quick minor comments below - all the best - Philip

- Delete 'Town' in Transition Town Stroud in a couple of places
- words like 'Energy Descent Pathway' I think are too much - even
'incremental', 'mitigated' and 'resilience' can be difficult for some
to read quick - and socio-economic could become social and economic -
need to keep language v simple
- Does the Core Group email link need to be so long?
- Under list of groups maybe a note saying 'More groups planned'
- Poss take out "It's about' and have that as a heading? Also if poss
keep those to one page?
- Capital 'C' for Carbon Trust

I know everybody is busy selling tickets but I'm feeling the lack of
organisation around displays for the event on Wednesday. Where will be
showing off what our groups are doing? And when? If nobody knows shouldn't
we get together and work this out? The platform speeches are one thing but
unless it looks like there is stuff happening we won't get the maximum value
out of this event.

I have arranged with Stroud Valleys Project to take all their available
display boards but I don't know when to pick them up or where to take them.
Can we have the display on the foreground to the Sub Rooms is weather
permits? If others want a display board can they let me know; otherwise I
won't bother to pick up more than those I need for Lifestyles and
Livelihoods and Textiles.

Molly

You’ve done a great job Dave and I think it will really help people. There are some changes I’d like to suggest, but they are straight forward ones. The overall layout seems to work well.

‘Peak Oil – What is Peak Oil?’ paragraph, final line should read ‘then’ not ‘the’
Page 2: mentions TTS rather than TS – paragraph under ‘What is Transition Stroud’
and in heading ‘How will TTS achieve its aims?’
Also, on my screen the main heading TRANSITION STROUD,  is split between the bottom of one page and the top of the next
Finally, looks like the web site link about joining TS discussions should have ‘list’ rather than ‘core’ in the address
I’ve sent this back to whole group so we don’t all end up duplicating
Have a good trip away

I agree Molly

We do need a short meeting to set out the meetings needs for people, chairs,
tables and boards etc.

I have an estate car which may be useful for the boards.

Following discussions on weds at the drinks event and further discussion
last night with Andy and Mike we have decided we'll do the displays in
the Sub Rooms and not (repeat not) in the congregational chapel as
previously planned.

The down side is that the displays will need to be a flat as possible
and against the wall - display boards or blu tack stuff to the wall. Try
to avoid tables unless absolutely necessary (eg. if you need one or two
to put food on). We'll probably loose 2 rows of chairs, that's 50 seats
so capacity will be 350... if we get more folks on the night we'll have
to be flexible and creative (that's what we're all about isn't it?)
We'll need to clear more rows of chairs quickly at the end of the talk
to make a bigger space near the back.

By being at the back of the main hall in the Subs we'll be there (near
the door) to greet people at the beginning and to talk to them again at
the end before they escape into the night. We'll sort some badges for
transitioners to identify ourselves amongst the throng.

Main reasons for dropping the separate hall for displays is we don't
have enough people to split between two venues and it'll very very hard
at the end of the meeting trying to get people out and across the
forecourt and into the other building - you could spend ages setting up,
miss half the talk and get only a handful of people to talk to in the
end. We'd have a situation where we were all trying to be in two places
at once. So we're trading a bit of extra chaos and a few seats for more
chance of useful interaction with the crowds.

and I guess things will go smoother if we can meet to go over stuff -
someone brave enough to suggest time and place (there's no way we're
going to find a slot everyone can make over the bank holiday weekend) so
it'll just have to be those that can do it.

peace - Dave

Thanks Dave. I have a much clearer idea now, although it's hard to think how
to make a display of our stuff without a table, especially the textiles. How
about putting the displays on the forecourt during the afternoon? Might also
rustle up some last-minute people for the talk?

If some groups really need tables then we can have a few, just don't want to have to pull out too much seating in case we get lots of extra people in on the night. Tables could go in the corners, it's probably useful to have one or two near the door for general leaflets and Triodos bags and stuff... also food in far corner will encourage people to go over there past the other displays?

I'm in town on Saturday morning - we're leafleting on the talk from 10am - anyone who can come along meet in front of Stroud Internet Shop (forget what it's actually called) at top of the high street.

How about following on with an 11am meeting on the steps in front of the sub rooms so we can go in and have a look and then go for a coffee if more discussions are needed? Anyone up for this?

just to stir the pot a wee bit more, StroudSown Food Group have
unanimously decided NOT to sell from the forecourt in the afternoon
before the talk. there are many reasons for this (doesn't make
financial sense for the businesses, particularly Angelo's, to be
trading for such a short period during what is traditionally a 'dead'
time in town; our pedal powered gennie is not quite ready; all VERY
busy anyway and me moving house...) so... could be a great opportunity
to get some static visuals in the forecourt (your CO2 balloon perhaps
Dave? tactile textiles stuff?)
and... my feeling is we may want the Bar to be open. if we booked it
(&perhaps staffed it too to keep costs down) we would have extra space
for displays, more incentive for people to hang around, and Greg's
beer on tap! The Food Group are putting all energies into the display
and will certainly offer tasters, so will need tables and it could be
worth us being in the bar area and our balloons all over the place?
sorry lots of questions there... tomorrow i'm mucking out barns at
Stroud Slad Farm in anticipation of our event there on Saturday 16th
of June (just in case my mail out last night missed any of you i've
attached it again!!) but if its the only time we can all make i could
try to be there (my other time suggestion would be 5pm ish on Sat or
sometime Monday) xx

just to add, blu tack is an absolute no no for the sub rooms. they
sometimes accept masking tape or white tack but only on gloss areas
like doors or specific display areas xx

To all you wonderful people

I just wanted to say that I am really impressed with the way that everyone
has thrown their energy and passion into Transition Stroud.

When I held the first gathering back in November last year, I never imagined
that a concept as scary (and inconvenient) as Peak Oil (and all that this
implies) would summon such an enormous amount of positive energy and
enthusiasm. The way in which people have pulled together and formed
numerous groups and held meeting after meeting has renewed my faith in
humanity. It is very reassuring that, bubbling away beneath the surface of
all that makes us discontent and fearful, that people have an enormous
amount of time, energy and enthusiasm for an alternative pathway. Whilst
politicians and economists offer more and more of the same old dictum -
growth, material consumption, money, money, money - it is truly inspiring to
go to bed at night knowing that people - ordinary people like us - just
aren't buying this shit any more and want different ways of doping things.

I thank you all for your input and enthusiasm.

For my own part, I am feeling a little burnt out - hence the escape to Wales
with those I love the most, for a few days of peace and contemplation.

Well done, all

Nice email Dave! I think everybody is burnt out. We are just too
enthusiastic for our own good. Can I edit 'economists' to 'some economists'
please?!!!

I spoke to both Daves last night and it seems that (a) ticket sales are
picking up and (b) the decision was made to have display only in the hall. I
have to say, though, that I agree with Odi. This is a good opportunity for
out-reach. I would really like to have something on the forecourt from
around 5pm, moving into the bar at 7pm. I have two stalls: textiles and
economics. If food and possibly education will join me, along with Dave's
balloons, we would have enough to make a goer of this.
