Dear Good People,

After three years of operating out of unit 23 in the Merrywalks shopping centre, the new owners have told us we have to be out by 23rd July 2018.

So we are now looking for a new (temporary or permanent) home URGENTLY.

We need a low/no cost space or spaces for either the farm to continue production or to store our kit (if we have to shut down). Anything considered – empty shop, garage, cellar, shed, poly tunnel. We can continue minimal production in as little as 15m2 with some natural light. Full operation currently uses about 60m2

Fungusloci is run on a shoestring, covering our minimal costs to create a healthy local food whilst diverting waste from landfill, sharing knowledge and promoting sustainable food production models. See below for more info.

Any offers, ideas, leads or thoughts please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Thanks in advance

Fungusloci is an experimental urban micro-farm project where oyster mushrooms are cultivated on waste coffee grounds in the heart of Stroud’s town centre. The micro-farm was opened in spring 2015, designed, built and managed by artist and educator Dominic Thomas. It was made possible by a ‘Local Food’ grant from Stroud District Council and is supported by SVA.

As well as supplying fresh and healthy locally grown produce to cafés, restaurants and the general public, the Fungusloci project is a model for small-scale sustainable food growing. We have been collecting and reprocessing up to 150kg of used coffee grounds a week from Stroud cafes (previously being sent to landfill). That’s up to one ton of waste every six weeks being converted into a healthy local food product. At the end of the process a top quality compost and soil improver is produced that can go back into gardens and allotments to help produce other local food crops.

Education has been a key part of the Fungusloci farm project. Talks, workshops, tours and exhibitions about the practice and culture of fungi and micro-biology in food production have been held at the Merrywalks unit. We have worked with primary and secondary schools, run workshops for adults and families, as well as running sessions for Sustainable Design students in Stroud and Bristol. The farm has shared its expertise with and been consulted by similar UK projects.

The farm received a small grant from the Barnwood Trust for an inclusive volunteer programme and mentoring scheme, helping young adults with disabilities or mental health challenges to get involved in and learn about the production process. By working closely with our volunteers we aim to help them gain confidence, knowledge and skills through being part of an exciting sustainable community project.
