Dear people on the Transition Town list and fellow Greens
Please excuse any double postings
-
I have copied the Opotiki Film Club
newsletter below - because I want to say the same thing to people on the
Green and TT list!
And while I am here - I have totally lost a book by James Kunstler - A
World Made by Hand - if you have this please let me know! Thanks very
much - hope to see you at the movies!

Dear Opotiki Film Club list people:
I am wearing my 'climate change education' hat here.....
The next film is not a 'Film Club' one - but is
a hugely important 'wake-
up call' to save the planet from meltdown.
Please don't think this film
will be 'merely preaching to the converted' as someone told me. Some of
us are already 'converted' to the urgency of action needed to stop
species (including our own) destruction - but don't know what we can do.
Millions of others are less bothered - and some still don't realise the
full implications of rapid global warming.
Please bring friends/neighbours/family who may be unconcerned or
expecting that 'governments' and 'technology' will save us - this won't
happen without our active participation. I tried the film out on three 14
year olds staying last week- it held their attention throughout - one
plans to ask his teacher to screen it for his school another wants to buy
the DVD to show his family. The format is personal stories/events
rather than the lecture approach of An Inconvenient Truth - very
accessible.
The
Age of Stupid
has the backing of every active climate
change scientist/analyst/journalist (and the Guardian newspaper) in the
western world.
THE AGE OF STUPID
Friday October 16th at 6 30 pm
Saturday October 17th at 2 00 pm and 5 00 pm
Running time: 1 hour 40 mins
You can e-book with me.
You can also arrange a screening for a group of 15 - 42 people any time
(day/evening week/weekend) that suits - contact me. Arrange for your
club/class - discount rates.
My in-box becomes chocka-block daily with messages from aid and
environment organisations (and now scientists) about the urgent need to
curb carbon/methane emissions immediately. If you have read this far,
an example is the abbreviated extract, below, from today's Mother
Jones (US journal)......
Regards - Lynne Dempsey
Dear friend,
On December 7, delegations from around the world will gather in
Copenhagen to negotiate the most important climate treaty ever. But
insiders are already warning that the best we can hope for, if there is a
deal at all, is a treaty that will hold carbon levels in the atmosphere to
450 parts per million. Scientists like NASA's James Hansen have told us
unequivocally that we must be under 350 ppm if we want to maintain a
planet "similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on
Earth is adapted." We are now at 387 ppm.
As Bill McKibben puts it in our upcoming special report, "Climate
Countdown", "Climate change is not a future problem for wise statesmen
to patiently work to avert. It's a right now, present tense, capital-E
Emergency."
...there is a dangerous disconnect between what we must do and what our
politicians are doing to respond to this crisis.... We are collaborating with
several of the nation's leading independent media organizations to tell
the biggest and most urgent story of our time.
... But this is a story that calls for reaching the widest possible audience,
with the broadest possible range of tools. It's reporting as if the future
depended on it....we (the editors) are both mothers of very young
children. It is their future—and that of every child around the
world—that is at stake now. They will judge us by how we tackled this
problem. What will we tell them?
