Hi Opotiki Coast Transition Town folk
Remember hearing about Lloyd Hosken's REAF project (Recreational
Enhanced Area for Fish)- seabed enhancement off the Opotiki coast?
Late last year some of us spent a day pouring concrete into various
shaped molds to make modules for a TT contribution to this visionary
community project - a first for New Zealand. A week ago we had the
pleasure of slipping through the Opotiki Bar in Lloyd's boat (just as
dawn was breaking on one of those gorgeous calm days we've been having)
and 20 minutes later sliding the TT modules overboard! The spot is GPS
marked - and within a couple of years the TT contribution to the
Community Reef should be growing fish - much closer inshore than current
fishing spots. Thanks to Lloyd for encouraging us to take part in this
venture - we can only hope that he gets more funding to develop it
further. This is what the Transition Town movement is all about -
preparing, at the local level, for a low-carbon future.
