Another year without EU support for the MIO-ECSDE annual programme |
2013, like 2011, is a year that MIO-ECSDE is called upon to function at its best without the EU annual support for its 2013 work programme. Mixed messages are being sent from Brussels, since on the one hand we are constantly congratulated for the great work we are doing and the valuable contribution to the developments in the region and at the same time we were not awarded the financial support for the work being congratulated for! You will see below how we are trying our very best with many activities going on. |

MIO-ECSDE along with other European CSOs active on nanotechnologies related issues formulated three demands which are key to sustainable and responsible governance of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials. These joint demands call for traceability of manufactured nanomaterials in products for downstream users and consumers, taking into account their full life-cycle; traceability of manufactured nanomaterials in all mixtures, preparations and articles, irrespective of their concentration and their release potential in nano-enabled products; transparent communication of nanomaterials’ use in preparations and products, through mandatory labeling requirements and an appropriate market surveillance instrument. These demands are supported by Client Earth, European Environment Bureau, European Trade Union Institute, Women in Europe for a Common Future, European Environmental Citizens’ Organization for Standardization, Dutch Trade Union FNV, Dutch N&M and MIO-ECSDE. They were developed within the framework of the Dutch TracingNano initiative led by IVAM University of Amsterdam aiming to strengthen the demands of European CSOs regarding the traceability of nanomaterials at EU-level. |

Introducing Sustainability to Moroccan Universities, Rabat, Morocco, 23-24 April 2013: Integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across all functions of Universities was the focus of the national training held in Morocco on 23-24 April 2013 within the framework of the Horizon 2020 CB/MEP. The training contributed directly to the implementation of the principles of the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD, which is currently in the pipeline and expected to be adopted at a Ministerial Meeting in October 2013. Progress in implementing the Ecosystem Approach roadmap: MIO-ECSDE participated in the 2nd Meeting of the Ecosystem Approach (EcAp) Coordination Group, held in Athens on the 24th of April 2013. The meeting’s discussions focused on the progress made in implementing the EcAp roadmap; the Draft list of Good Environmental Status (GES) definitions and corresponding targets; the proposed activities to be undertaken to achieve expected outcomes implementing the EcAp road map and the revised timeline with priorities for the future. MIO-ECSDE Programme Officer, Thomais Vlachogianni actively contributed to the meeting and made several interventions/recommendations on pollution related GES descriptors and associated operational objectives and targets. Specific emphasis was given to the issues related to marine litter and to underwater noise where MIO-ECSDE was one of the few participants that proposed concrete targets. Elaborating the Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter: MIO-ECSDE actively contributed to the elaboration of the Regional Plan on Prevention and Management of Marine Litter. To that end MIO-ECSDE Programme Officer, Thomais Vlachogianni and the Chairman Michael Scoullos participated in the Designated Experts meeting (Barcelona, 17-18 May 2013) and the MEDPOL & CP/RAC focal points meeting (Barcelona, 19-21 June 2013), respectively. The proposed Regional Plan, expected to be adopted at the upcoming meeting of the Contracting Parties of the Barcelona Convention (December 2013), deals mainly with prevention measures to address the problem of marine litter in the Mediterranean and ways to remove marine litter found in the Mediterranean, in accordance with internationally accepted practices and approaches. Following the developments of the MCSD: The MIO-ECSDE Secretariat participated in the 15th meeting of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) which was held from 10 to 12 June 2013 in Valletta, Malta. The Maltese Government hosted the meeting and also made the participation of MIO-ECSDE a possibility, since they covered the accommodation and subsistence expenses. MIO-ECSDE represented not only its network and members but also the H2020 CB/MEP Consortium, since a lot of work on Sustainable Development has been achieved under the project. The Meeting agreed on the need to revise the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD), taking into consideration Rio+20 outcomes and the need for the new MSSD to be more action oriented and include a better monitoring and review system. However, the extent of success will always depend on the availability of funds to allow for the MCSD and the MSSD to reach their full potential. The MCSD members and observers also welcomed the preliminary work of CP/RAC linked with the SWITCH-Med project regarding Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). A draft Road Map to address the region’s common priorities in this respect was presented, aiming to support the region to implement Rio+20 Sustainable Consumption and Production Plans. During a session dedicated to the presentation of best practices, MIO-ECSDE presented the success story of the Mediterranean Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development, which was very well received by the MCSD Members. Joint NGO reaction to the EU Proposal for a Directive establishing a framework for maritime spatial planning and integrated coastal management |
Twenty six (26) European environmental NGOs, including MIO-ECSDE, joined their voices in a position paper reacting to the recently published (March 2013) EU Proposal for a Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) and Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) Directive. These NGOs acknowledge the importance of the MSP and ICM as tools to ensure that marine ecosystems and their component habitats and species are taken into consideration in decision making related to the use of coastal and marine areas as well as of ecosystem services. Furthermore, they welcome the proposed requirement for an ecosystem-based approach. However, they are deeply concerned by the high potential of the proposed Directive to be misinterpreted as just a tool to drive the EU’s Blue Growth agenda forward, while putting environmental objectives on par with sectoral growth objectives.
