Dear Friend,
Sorry to say that we have to cancel tomorrow’s morning on site due to illness.
I will be back in touch to arrange another date soon.
Please pass this message on to anyone you know was planning to come.
Many thanks,
Jo

Subject: September update
Dear Friend,
We hope that you have had a lovely summer. We have a few things to update you about.
Sad News:
Firstly, we have some very sad news. Dennis Laraman, a very enthusiastic and active supporter of the Abbot’s Mill Project, passed away last month. Dennis, who is in the middle of this photo, had been involved in the project from very early on and really embraced what we are trying to achieve. He used to send me regular updates about his observations of wildlife on the site and was carrying out some history research for the project. He always kept morale going on volunteer days with his jokes and funny stories. We will miss him deeply. We are speaking with Dennis’s family about a fitting memorial to Dennis and will let you know more about this soon.
Planning Application:
Many thanks again to those of you who wrote in support of our last planning application. As you know, we withdrew this application because we wanted to have the chance to discuss some of the points in the report written by the Planning Officer. We have decided to provide much more detailed information this time. We are continuing to work on this. As a reminder – it is for a garden room and an information board on the site. The garden room would provide a base for volunteers (we now have a core group of around 50 people who regularly work with the project), a base from which to provide small workshops on subjects about living sustainably and a small resource and information library to provide free information and support about sustainability, biodiversity and other environmental subjects. Please let me know if you would like more information about this or if you would be able to help us with the planning application.
Morning on Site:
We are planning a morning on site for the 6th of October from 10am (until lunchtime or come at any time and stay as long as you can). This will be to do some general tidying and adding some more woodchip to the path that we laid plus a short planning meeting about next steps. Please let me know if you are able to come along.
Tree Planting Ceremony:
The 1st Whitstable Scout Group has very kindly donated 61 trees to our project! We will be having a public tree planting ceremony on the 10th of November at 10am. The Scout Band will also be playing at this. Watch this space for more details.
Permaculture Planning/Design Session:
We are planning a session to start to design our outside space based on permaculture principles. This will be with Jo Barker (local very well respected permaculturalist). We are planning a date in October (to be agreed). We will be looking at how we can enhance the space for wildlife and improve biodiversity at the same time as enabling people to learn about those things and to think about how they could replicate them in their own back yard. Please let me know if you are interested in being involved with this.
East Kent Transition Gathering:
We are part of Transition City Canterbury which is organising an East Kent Transition Gathering.
Canterbury Christ Church University is kindly hosting this at Augustine House on the 30th of September from 2-6pm. The event is free. See attached flyer for more details.
If you can help with our stall on the day please or with any other aspects of the day (for example writing press releases, taking photographs or answering people’s questions, anything else you can think of), please contact me.
We are also looking for a graphic facilitator(s) for the day. Please let me know if you have that particular talent.

If you would like to get involved locally please visit our Facebook pages: East Kent Transition or Transition City Canterbury.
Big Green Energy Fair - Faversham:
Swale Friends of the Earth is organising a Big Green Energy Fair on the 29th of September from 10am until 4pm at the Alexander Centre in Faversham. Please see the flyer for more details.
Traffic Watch and Public Consultation about the St. Dunstan’s and Westgate Towers Traffic Management Scheme:
We have recently launched a campaign called Traffic Watch. We are a group of local residents, businesses, environmental organisations, public transport providers, cycling and walking groups and academics that are committed to reducing traffic in Canterbury and surrounding areas.
We support the Westgate and St. Dunstan's Traffic Management Scheme trial and we believe, that although is not perfect, it is a trial which can be tweaked and improved upon and is a step in the right direction towards reducing traffic in Canterbury and developing a more sustainable transport system for our city.

As you are probably aware Canterbury City Council is running a public consultation about the traffic scheme. This will run until the 15th of October. Please do take a few minutes to feed in with your views about how we can reduce traffic in Canterbury and improve the environment for everyone. You can do this online at: http://www.canterbury.gov.uk/westgatetowerstrial or you can request a paper copy from the City Council.
A reminder to check out our Facebook page:
Please ‘like’ us, share with your friends and feel free to add any information about living sustainably and reducing our ecological footprint.

As you know we are really keen to hear from local people and community groups who are interested in getting involved in the project, putting forward suggestions and ideas and joining our team. Please contact us for more details.
With our best wishes,
Jo (on behalf of the Abbot’s Mill Project)
