Subject: Abbot's Mill Project Planning Application

Dear Friend,

As you know, we withdrew our previous planning application for an array of solar (photo-voltaic) panels on our site. This was following a very useful and supportive meeting with the Canterbury Conservation Advisory Committee.

We have now submitted a new application. This is for a temporary ‘garden room’ on the site. The purpose of this would be as a space for our volunteers (we have a core group of around 40 people, including many local residents, who have regularly got involved in the project in various ways), to host small meetings and run workshops around various topics to do with sustainability, conservation and the environment, to store gardening tools and to house a resource library (information about sustainability and living in an environmentally friendly way).

We would also add a 1.5kW system of solar (photo-voltaic) panels to the roof. This is much smaller than our original application but it will still mean that we can generate clean, green electricity for the site (to power a kettle/laptop, lights etc inside the garden room) and we would receive a small amount from the Feed-in-Tariff to help subsidise workshops and develop the volunteer programme.

You can find more information about the application here:

It would be brilliant if you could write a letter or e-mail in support of our planning application.

Please do this by writing to Development Control, Canterbury City Council, Military Road, Canterbury, CT1 1YW or by e-mailing developme...@canterbury.gov.uk

Please note that the deadline for submissions is the 23/07/2012.

Please do contact me if you have any questions about the application.

I have also attached an artistic impression of the waterwheel. Mark Thatcher has kindly produced this for us. I think you will agree that it really captures the atmosphere of this special place and shows how it could be enhanced by adding the waterwheel.

Many thanks,

Jo
