I have run 3 test and have had sludge in all three. I used two
deferent steam distilled waters and one with medical quality distilled
water fro the hospital and they all had sludge. It must be the lye.

What brand lye are you using?

I'd be interested to know as well. I ran tests on GV, EW James, the
Walmart nursery water, and the steam distilled from Rural King. Only
the RK water stayed clean.... all with the same lye, Drain Out with
the metal sieved out.

I feel I ought to mention that all tests were run with NEW plates,
that were thoroughly washed in hot soapy water. Plate designs did
vary, though. Perhaps I should repeat them with the same design.

It may be the quality of the plates.

I think that it is the plates, because i got some plates from one
place and some from another place. Some of the plates are not the
same grade of steel. Some are 302 and some are 430. The 430 plates
turned a little and the 302 did not. You need to make sure you use
pure lye not some kind of drain cleaner. Make sure that you use
steamed distilled water. Has anybody used vinegar and got any
results? I have tried different amounts and got nothing with
different arrangements in my plates. I used distilled white vinegar.
If anybody has any input let me know!

I using power supply lye also and I don't have sludge, but I got my
plates from Lowes. They are Cooper brand I believe.

Stainless steel grade, water, and catalyst all have effects on the
sludge.

We have not seen any sludge at TTC McKenzie units that we have built
yet.
We are using 100% lye, steamed distilled water, and various different
stainless steel.

We started purchasing wall plates from Lowes.
These were a 302 grade.
We have also used 316 grade stainless wire, 316 grade stainless
plates.

After the first sludge comment, we checked the quality of the plates
sold locally.
They are a 340 grade.

Grades of plates vary depending on the vender.
The grade is determined by the amount iron in the steel.
This is why with some stainless steel a magnet will stick to and it is
still stainless steel.

Without experiencing this sludge, I can only guess that the lower
quality stainless in any combination of wrong lye or water will
deteriorate faster than a higher grade stainless steel and show up in
a sludge.

I wish I had a better answer or a solution.
The only thing I can offer is to pass on the knowledge what the
perfect cell will consist of, that is 316L stainless in a solution of
100% lye and steamed distilled water. Anything less will be less than
perfect.
