Maharashtra to unveil new policy for development of ports: Fadnavis

 

The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Devendra Fadnavis, has said that a comprehensive new policy for development of ports in the state would be unveiled soon, which would help the state further strengthen its position as a significant import and export hub of the country.

 

Speaking on the sidelines of a function here last week, he said that funding for the proposed project, requiring investment up to Rs 50,000 crore, would not be a hurdle as the Union Shipping Minister Mr Nitin Gadkari had assured funds.

 

With a 720-km coastal stretch and human resources, Maharashtra could have ports every 100 km, he added.

 

Even the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, had given the state government his backing for infrastructure upgradation, especially for the development of ports which he considers a priority.

 

Mr Fadnavis said there was urgent need for an integrated transport network that would be interlinked with all the ports across Maharashtra.

 

He disclosed that the state government and the Ministry of Railways were working out multiple models port-wise that would ease traffic congestion.
