What's the difference between shelf live expiration time and expiration time?

I'm studing the modules stock_lot and stock_lot_sled and I don't can to see the difference between shelf live expiration time and expiration time. Can someone explain to me?

Shelf life is when the product can stay on the shelf.
Expiration is when the product can no more be used.
