Antivirus is a kind of software used to prevent, scan, detect and delete viruses from a computer. Once installed, most antivirus software runs automatically in the background to provide real-time protection against virus attacks.

Comprehensive virus protection programs help protect your files and hardware from malware such as worms, Trojan horses and spyware, and may also offer additional protection such as customizable firewalls and website blocking.

Most provide real-time protection, which can protect your devices from incoming threats; scan your entire computer regularly for known threats and provide automatic updates; and identify, block and delete malicious codes and software.

Antivirus software begins operating by checking your computer programs and files against a database of known types of malware. Since new viruses are constantly created and distributed by hackers, it will also scan computers for the possibility of new or unknown types of malware threats.

Typically, most programs will use three different detection devices: specific detection, which identifies known malware; generic detection, which looks for known parts or types of malware or patterns that are related by a common codebase; and heuristic detection, which scans for unknown viruses by identifying known suspicious file structures. When the program finds a file that contains a virus, it will usually quarantine it and/or mark it for deletion, making it inaccessible and removing the risk to your device.

Each month, we stop over 1.5 billion cyberattacks all around the globe thanks to an unrivaled threat detection network, which is why professionals and amateurs alike love our free and paid antivirus protection.

A type of malware that infects your computer often through malicious downloads or deceptive links. Viruses are designed to spread themselves across files and programs as well as across networks to other devices. Indications that you may have a virus on your computer include slowdowns,

There are many vendors who produce anti-virus software, and deciding which one to choose can be confusing. Anti-virus software typically performs the same types of functions, so your decision may be driven by recommendations, particular features, availability, or price. Regardless of which package you choose, installing any anti-virus software will increase your level of protection.

While installing anti-virus software is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your computer, it has its limitations. Because it relies on signatures, anti-virus software can only detect malware that has known characteristics. It is important to keep these signatures up-to-date. You will still be susceptible to malware that circulates before the anti-virus vendors add their signatures, so continue to take other safety precautions as well.

I recently got malicious adware on my computer by verifying that I am human. I did the normal procedure of removing extensions, clearing browser cache etc, the necessary things to remove adware. I then ran Nortons Full System Scan, and Nortons Power Eraser. They both found nothing.

I then decided to try a different anti-virus to be sure. Because I knew the adware was not just going to give me ads. After running the 2nd software they found 5 Registry value, 2 folder, 8 registry key, and 5 file threats. 7 of which were trojan viruses, 3 were PUP (I understand norton doesn't detect these), and the rest risk and adware.

This is very disappointing as I expect an anti-virus so positively reviewed and expensive to at least detect all trojan viruses.

Although it is not recommended to have more than one real time AV product active at a time, there is nothing wrong with having a second opinion on demand scanner installed. Many here use the free version of Malwarebytes as a second opinion scanner.

There are many users here that even run Malwarebytes real time protection alongside Norton. Malwarebytes support has articles on what items you need to exclude from each other's scans. Although some users have not even set up the exclusions and report no issues.

Yes, I used Malwarebytes as a second-opinion scanner. They found the trojans, adware, etc. Norton has always been good to me as it has blocked many sites for me many times. It was just a little worrying to see all these different types of malware found through Malwarebytes and not Norton.

I was worried that they were stealing different types of information through my drives.

We have successfully used LogMeIn Antivirus for a year on many Windows 10 Pro computers; however, I just installed it on several new Windows 11 Pro computers. The program appears to install and the policies seem to apply correctly; however LMI Central is not getting updated information from the computers.

I have changed the LMI AV policy to turn off the firewall and have also disabled the Windows firewall as requested by LMI support. I enabled logging in LMI Control Panel and uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled LMI AV and sent the debugging logs to LMI support.

Hi @remoteworker93 I see you have a case with support. Our team is currently reviewing and should have an update for you shortly. Thanks for sharing this experience and I hope to have a resolution for you soon.

Same issue for us. Logmein says we do not have real time anti virus. The desktops show they are. We have turned off and turned on the real time. Still same issue - shows not real time. Annoyance. Not a problem though.

LMI Support did eventually fix this issue which was on their end. This was their response: "I would like to inform you that an update was made and the issue with the AntiVirus was corrected, could your restart the computer and let me know if is working fine."

Antivirus software was originally developed to detect and remove computer viruses, hence the name. However, with the proliferation of other malware, antivirus software started to protect against other computer threats. Some products also include protection from malicious URLs, spam, and phishing.[1]

Although the roots of the computer virus date back as early as 1949, when the Hungarian scientist John von Neumann published the "Theory of self-reproducing automata",[2] the first known computer virus appeared in 1971 and was dubbed the "Creeper virus".[3] This computer virus infected Digital Equipment Corporation's (DEC) PDP-10 mainframe computers running the TENEX operating system.[4][5]

In 1983, the term "computer virus" was coined by Fred Cohen in one of the first ever published academic papers on computer viruses.[11] Cohen used the term "computer virus" to describe programs that: "affect other computer programs by modifying them in such a way as to include a (possibly evolved) copy of itself."[12] (note that a more recent definition of computer virus has been given by the Hungarian security researcher Pter Szőr: "a code that recursively replicates a possibly evolved copy of itself").[13][14]

The first IBM PC compatible "in the wild" computer virus, and one of the first real widespread infections, was "Brain" in 1986. From then, the number of viruses has grown exponentially.[15][16] Most of the computer viruses written in the early and mid-1980s were limited to self-reproduction and had no specific damage routine built into the code. That changed when more and more programmers became acquainted with computer virus programming and created viruses that manipulated or even destroyed data on infected computers.[17]
