The Immortal (Italian: L'immortale) is a 2019 Italian crime film directed by Marco D'Amore. The film is both a prequel and a sequel to the events after the third season of the TV series Gomorrah.[2][3]
Throughout the film are flashbacks to Ciro's early life in Naples. Ciro had been rescued as a baby from the 1980 Naples earthquake in which his family had been killed. As a child he was sent to an orphanage, falling under the influence of Bruno, a small time criminal who controlled a street gang of child thieves, and collaborated with Neapolitan gangster and smuggler "Blackbird" ('"o Merlo"). Bruno, dissatisfied with his rewards from Blackbird, became enthusiastic when given a role in smuggling cigarettes. Due to his precocious talent, and affection for him, Bruno invited Ciro to watch his girlfriend, Stella sing at a club restaurant. Ciro became infatuated with her.
Throughout the filming of Gomorrah, while working on his character Ciro Di Marzio, Marco D'Amore repeatedly thought about writing a story about the childhood of Ciro. After writing enough material, he thought that there could be a screenplay for a cross-media project between cinema and TV.[4][5]
La pellicola, midquel/spin-off della serie televisiva Gomorra - La serie, riprende il personaggio di Ciro Di Marzio, interpretato nel film e nella serie dallo stesso D'Amore. Le vicende rappresentate si svolgono parallelamente a quelle della quarta stagione di quest'ultima.
Ciro Di Marzio, fortunatamente sopravvissuto al colpo di pistola che l'amico Gennaro "Genny" Savastano era stato costretto a sparargli (evento che aveva concluso la terza stagione di Gomorra - La serie), essendosi il proiettile fermato a un centimetro dal cuore, è costretto ad andare via da Napoli e iniziare una nuova vita in Lettonia, a Riga, dove lavora per conto del boss Don Aniello Pastore, al servizio dei clan russi, suoi alleati. Qui ritrova Bruno, una persona che ha segnato la sua infanzia e la sua vita. Riaffiorano i ricordi della giovanissima età, connotata dalla perdita di ogni tipo di affetto a causa del Terremoto dell'Irpinia del 1980, che lo vide come unico sopravvissuto della famiglia, a nemmeno un mese di età (da qui il soprannome Immortale), costringendolo di fatto a vivere di espedienti, insieme ad alcuni suoi coetanei fin quando, avendo di nuovo perso la sua "famiglia", ovvero Bruno e Stella, corre verso Secondigliano e lì conosce il giovane Attilio, che lo presenta al boss Pietro Savastano. Attraverso una serie di peripezie, Ciro si trova in mezzo a una guerra malavitosa che non è la sua, con i clan russi da un lato, che detengono il controllo del traffico della droga in Lettonia, e dall'altro quelli lettoni, che lottano per affermare la supremazia criminale nella propria terra. Bruno tradirà Ciro, ma quest'ultimo, con genio e destrezza, riuscirà, ancora una volta, a cavarsela. Il film si chiude con Ciro che riceve un pacco contenente la testa mozzata di Don Aniello mentre a bordo di una vettura arriva Genny: i due si ritrovano.
Il film ha ricevuto recensioni positive. Rosa Maiuccaro di Wired Italia afferma che L'immortale non è "Gomorra riciclata" ma un nuovo importante capitolo della saga.[11] Andrea Fornasiero di Mymovies.it ha affermato L'immortale, Ciro non delude e resta uguale a se stesso anche sul grande schermo.[12]
The film opens with the last scene of season 3, where Genny shoots Ciro. We see the shot, Ciro's body being thrown overboard and Genny leaving on another boat, looking back. The whole thing is interspliced with the Irpinia earthquake, showing baby Ciro's mother coming back to get him just to have the building collapse, and a firefighter pulling the baby from the rubbles in a parallelism with a little crew of fishermen pulling present day Ciro out of the sea. They don't really seem too keen on getting involved, since they recognize him as a Secondigliano boss, but drag him out anyway.
Fans of the hit Italian crime drama Gomorrah who have only reached season three may want to stop reading here for fear of a huge spoiler. The Immortal or L'Immortal is a feature-length film that picks up the action in the aftermath of the shocking events in the season three finale. We once again witness one of the show's two central characters, Ciro Di Marzio (D'Amore), being shot by the man he once thought of as a brother, Gennaro Savastano (Salvatore Esposito). As Ciro's lifeless body is thrown off a boat and we see it sinking to the depths of the ocean, the action flashes back to an earthquake that sees a baby Ciro fall to certain death in the arms of his mother as their building collapses. Those that have followed the show will know the earthquake story and how Ciro's survival earned him the nickname "The Immortal." It's a deserving moniker as it's revealed Ciro has once again cheated death. After being pulled out of the ocean and taken to hospital, Gennaro's rival Don Aniello Pastore (Nello Mascia) sends Ciro -- unbeknownst to anyone -- to Latvia where he is to work as a broker for a drug-dealing arm of the Russian mob.
Despite the change of location from Naples to Riga, Latvia's capital, the film doesn't lose anyone of its distinctive style and moodiness. Nor does Ciro who remains a man of few words but with a reputation that proceeds him. This is Ciro's film and D'Amore, who co-wrote the script, also directs proceedings. In a series of flashbacks, we learn more about Ciro's childhood and how he came to be the man he is. Yet despite this backstory it's difficult to see how those unfamiliar with the show will get on board. One of the best things about the TV show is the character development of its two leads, Ciro and Genarro, and their relationship. This dynamic is missing from The Immortal and it's the poorer for it. Rather than a standalone film, this is an accompaniment piece to Gomorrah that fills in some blanks between seasons three and five. One for the fans, new audiences are best advised to start at the beginning with season one.
The film, which will be released in Italy next Christmas by Vision Distribution, is not a stand-alone prequel film, but will actually connect the story to the upcoming season five of the TV series. Gomorrah has previously been creative in its platform storytelling, introducing a VR storyline in-between seasons, but this is the first time a feature film is being used as a segment of the TV series storyline.
Siamo quasi in trance quando, dopo dieci minuti di incomprensibili formule sacre, si sente distintamente: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, The Wolverine, Blu-ray and Dvd. Riuscite a immaginare la scena? In pratica il monaco stava pregando per il successo del film. Per un attimo abbiamo temuto che in caso di basse vendite saremmo stati colti da una maledizione dei super eroi Marvel in tag team con qualche divinità giapponese. Poi la guida ci tranquillizza spiegandoci che per quanto possa sembra surreale, nel mondo dello spettacolo giapponese è una pratica diffusa pregare in questo tempio per il successo di un artista o di una produzione. Ci fidiamo, e pieni di buoni propositi per la promozione di questo home video ci spostiamo in un Dojo: una grande stanza dedicata agli allenamenti di arti marziali.
Quello che avviene in questo caso è un crossover tra cinema e tv mai visto prima in Italia. Se i fan vorranno sapere cosa accade nella quinta stagione della serie dovranno scomodarsi dal divano per precipitarsi al cinema (il film esce il 5 dicembre). Affermare addirittura che si tratti di un film autonomo, come hanno fatto i produttori di Cattleya, pare esagerato. Senza una conoscenza delle trame e dei protagonisti di Gomorra buona parte dei riferimenti presenti nel film risulterebbero allo spettatore del tutto incomprensibili.
Ono to bylo celou dobu za 4, ale ten konec, ten mě rozebral, já prostě mám slabost pro chlapský přátělství až za hrob a dál. Je to možná patetický, ale kdo vyrůstal na Žižkově tak může tomu rozumět víc. Ciro byl nejvýraznější postava seriálu Gomora a tak se nedivím, že dostal vlastní film a je super, drsnost zůstala, ale přibyla pořádná porce zásad, který vedou Cira k rozhodnutím a povaze jakou má, což ti velmi dobře objasňují flashbacky z Cirova dětství. Cesta do hlubin Cirovi duše je pro mě úplný gangstersko - chlapský balzám. Tradičně výtečný hudební doprovod. Není co řešit, jasná pět(24.10.2020)
Pro fanoušky seriálu Gomora asi povinnost, přestože to žádná velká pecka není. Spíš to vypadá, že když v seriálu skončil M. DAmore, tak chtěl chytit šanci za pačesy a využít momentální popularitu své postavy. Napsal kus scénáře, stoupnul si za kameru a zároveň si střihl i hlavní roli. No, na jednu stranu obdivuhodnej výkon, na druhou ten výsledek, to prostě není ono. Už jenom to, že se fanoušci na jeho postavu těší a on přitom za celý dvě hodiny řekne jen pár vět, jinak se zachmuřeně čumí, nasazuje si a zase sundává sluneční brýle. A to je prostě málo! Linka flashbacků z jeho dětství je možná zajímavá, dozvíme se, jak se vlastně dostal k mafii, ale postupem času začne nudit. Naopak odkazy na seriál potěší. V Itálli sice nejnavštěvovanější film za poslední dekádu, ale jinak slabej odvar skvělýho seriálu.(07.07.2020)

Il film è l'adattamento del romanzo "L'immortel" dello scrittore, giornalista politico e presentatore tv francese Franz-Olivier Giesbert, a sua volta ispirato a un'incredibile storia vera, quella della guerra tra gangster avvenuta nella Marsiglia della fine degli anni 70, quella tra Jacques Imbert, detto Jacky Le Mat, ultimi padrino della mafia locale e il suo nemico giurato Tany Zampa. Così come accade nel film, il vero Jacky sopravvisse miracolosamente a un attentato di cui rimase vittima in un parcheggio della cittadina di Cassis nel 1977. Con 22 pallottole nel corpo, il suo rivale Tany Zampa era invece convinto del suo decesso.
