While I was starting to thinking about the upcoming "bike-to-work"
day, I started thinking... we should organize a "bus to work day"!
Perhaps we could ask the transit agencies to pitch-in by offering free
rides for the day in order to eliminate one of the obstacles to trying
the bus (i.e., figuring out the fare system).

The Bay Area's 'spare-the-air' program had a different objective, but
a similar effect, and provides some ideas to how we could try to
anticipate and overcome funding gaps:

How could we make this work here?

I was surprised to see that King County had the same number of unhealthy air days declared as San Francisco in recent years (at my cursory query). I think the big stumbling box here is the dent in revenue for Metro and ST, which the state government office in California is willing to cover due to the general awareness of poor air quality and the political will to do something about it.

I think that the possibility of gridlock reduction could be more appealing to Seattlities, something along the lines of the comparative road use pictures in ST's Commuter Toolkit poster (which I can't seem to find online). If the Viaduct and the 520 bridge go away concurrently, traffic could get very tight.
