Pretty much all of my Sage 50 accounts clients run the software over a network with no problems. It is odd that you say that both accounts and payroll are slow as their databases and means of accessing the databases are completely different and share nothing in common so, if they are both slow, it would suggest that the problem is more likely to be network related than software related.
It would be useful to have a bit more information, say:
* the size of the accdata folder for Sage 50 accounts and the mdb file for Sage 50 payroll
* some indication of what specific actions are slow, and how long some of the actions take
* what's the minimum link speed
* does the server have hard disks or SSDs
This guide describes payroll tax related updates for the Sage 100 Payroll module and covers changes to withholding tables, standard deductions, exemptions, and wage base limits that have been made to the online payroll tax database. It is a supplement to the Payroll Tax Update Report located on the Payroll Utilities menu, which lists the updates that are installed using the Payroll Tax Update utility. To learn more, see Payroll Tax Updates.
This guide is provided for informational purposes. Changes to the online payroll tax calculation engine are handled by Sage; however, some updates may also require you to download and install the update available through the Payroll Tax Update utility. Be sure to review this guide after installing tax updates.

Payroll formulas and updates are not included with the software. If you just installed Sage 50, most payroll taxes will not calculateautomatically for you during payroll entry. (In some cases, payroll taxamounts will be inaccurate or zero.) To calculate these taxes in Sage 50 and to stay current with regulatory changes, you should subscribe to Sage Business Care, and install the latest tax update (see how below).
If you have the latest update installed, the first four digits of the version represent the current payrolltax year (for example, 20110101 represents version 0101 forpayroll tax year 2011). If the first four digits of the versiondo not match your current payroll year, you should install the latesttax update.
If your tax version is 19000101,a generic set of payroll formulas is installed on your system. These formulas are suppliedwith previous installations of Sage 50. During payroll entry, these formulas will not calculate accurate payroll tax amounts. (Most calculatedamounts will be zero.) Sage 50 does not provide formulaswith each version of the product that it ships. For up-to-date formulas, subscribe to Sage Business Care.
If you have closed the general ledger for that fiscal year, Sage 100 Contractor displays a message stating that you cannot directly void the ledger transaction for this payroll record. There is no general ledger record to void in the current year.
To verify that the reversal has been posted, go to the payroll record and verify that the status has changed to 5-Void. At the bottom left corner of the payroll record click Go to Transaction and verify that the 1-3 Journal Transaction is correct.
You can export data from the Company level Timesheets tool in Procore and import it directly into Payroll in Sage 300 CRE. This allows self-performing contractors to spend less time formatting data, decreases duplicate data entry between time collection and payroll, and ensures a more accurate data flow.
At the end of the calendar year, close the payroll to prepare for the new calendar year. During the close, Sage 100 Contractor removes all payroll records and resets the quarter-to-date and year-to-date totals to $0. It is important to note that closing payroll does not affect the accrued vacation, sick, and compensation times in the employee records that you choose to retain. You can also delete old or unnecessary employee records.
Before entering timecards for the new calendar year, audit, back up, and then close/archive the payroll. Although you may back up your company data at any time, in the context of closing the payroll, it makes sense to back up your data after you have audited it and corrected any errors.
Closing payroll can be time consuming, and the time necessary to create an archive may be considerable depending on the number of payroll records and employees contained in each company. We recommend creating a schedule of tasks to perform leading up to the close. For example, consider auditing the payroll a month in advance of the scheduled closing date. This should provide enough time to resolve any errors that might exist.
While it is not recommended, Sage 100 Contractor lets you close payroll with uncomputed records, unposted records, even payroll audit errors. If you close with unfinished work, you must go back to the archive later and compute and post the records, repair the audit errors, and then adjust the payroll records in the active company. From the archive, you can also prepare and print the state and federal reports (including W-2 forms).
We've updated the icon to a new modern look which aligns with our new brand and also brings it together with all other Sage products on both desktop and cloud platforms. You can see more of this on our websites including sage.com.
The installer for your payroll update isn't able to change an existing desktop icon. Instead, the installer places a new icon with the new name on your desktop. You should simply delete the old icon with the old name.
The payroll archive company is different than the general ledger archive company. If you enter transactions between closing the fiscal year and closing payroll, back up and archive your accounting and payroll records separately to ensure that you have permanent records of all your data.
