rdesktop is an open source UNIX client for connecting to Windows Remote Desktop Services, capable of natively speaking Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in order to present the user's Windows desktop. rdesktop is known to work with Windows server versions ranging from NT 4 terminal server to Windows Server 2016.
rdesktop is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), version 3. Please send feedback, bug reports and patches to the appropriate mailing list. Patches could also be submitted as a pull request on GitHub.

rdesktop is an implementation of a client software for Microsoft's proprietary Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Rdesktop is free and open-source software, subject to the requirements of the GNU General Public License (GPL-3.0-or-later), and is available for Linux and BSD as well as for Microsoft Windows.
As of August 2013, rdesktop implements a large subset of the RDP 5 protocol. Unlike Remote Desktop Connection in modern versions of Windows, rdesktop still supports the older RDP 4.0 protocol used by Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition and Windows 2000 Server.
Rdesktop is commonly used on desktop ReactOS and Linux installations to connect to Microsoft Windows running Remote Desktop Services. There are many GUI clients, like tsclient, Gnome-RDP and KDE Remote Desktop Connection (KRDC), which are graphical front-ends to rdesktop. The program has also been integrated into several thin client Linux distributions like Thinkstation and the PC TSC project, as well as some thin client appliances.[5]

We have Debian only with the SSH package installed and RDESKTOP in the call center with 16 machines logging into the Windows Server 2016 TS. However, if an employee goes out to have a coffee and the computer is without activity, he drops the rdesktop and returns to the home screen. Debian is ready with login and password. How do I never go into standby?

I was able to connect to a windows machine. If I go to full screen then I was unable to get back. Screen remain full in the windows machine. I tried restarting the remote windows machine, then the current(linux) machine screen frozen at the shutdown screen of the remote windows machine.
I'm looking for options to detect windows remote connection problem, basically to check if the Remote Desktop connection is working. I have monitors to check the windows remote desktop port (3389) and also for the certificate used by the remote desktop if it's still valid. This is working fine for case like port being blocked or not available for whatever reasons, also good to detect if the certificate is invalid (like expired or not able to validate to the PKI server). However this monitor will not able to detect for such case where both port and certificate are good, but connection is refused by whatever reason. For example if license server is not available. In this such case the monitor that I have will still shows as green because both port and certificate good. What I would need is some kind of remote desktop user experience, it doesn't need to be fancy like to get response time or anything but simply if the remote desktop is working and the server is accepting RDP connection.
So from MS tech support, they confirmed that there are no solution for the "RDP user experience" monitor. The closest thing that they suggest is to do the windows log event monitor. There is a SAM template that apparently covers this "Windows Remote Desktop Services (Session Host Role)".
Once the Remote Desktop Connection utility launches, you should see a windows similar to this one. Click on the down arrow next to the button that says Options or Show Options. This will expand the window to give you additional options.
