When you buy a Keep Colorado Wild Pass, your pass is your vehicle registration card from the DMV with a Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) logo printed on your card. No additional window sticker or receipt is required or provided.
Colorado residents can get a $29 Keep Colorado Wild Pass when registering a car, motorcycle, recreation vehicle or light truck through the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The $29 pass is included in your registration total unless you choose to opt out.
Backcountry Safety- Your pass supports the volunteer and equipment needs of search and rescue professionals across Colorado and avalanche safety programs through the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Because of your support and the tremendous generosity of our search and rescue responders, Colorado will be a safer place to play.
Our goal is to raise at least $36 million annually from pass sales. The first $32.5 million will go toward state park maintenance and development; the next $2.5 million will go towards search and rescue teams and $1 million to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Any revenue beyond that will go to wildlife projects and outdoor educational programs.
Simply show your vehicle registration card with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife logo to enter a park. The logo will appear on the card without your address printed. If the park entrance is not staffed, you can enter the park but may be asked to show your pass at any time.
Yes. A Keep Colorado Wild Pass gives you access to state parks and recreation areas without a vehicle and up to three additional visitors aged 16 and older. Coloradans 16 years old or younger can visit state parks for free.
When you buy a Keep Colorado Wild Pass through the DMV, the pass is linked to the specific car, motorcycle, recreation vehicle or light truck being registered. The pass is not transferable between vehicles. A pass should be purchased for any vehicle you want to use to enter a Colorado state park.
This pass does not grant access to federal recreation fee areas, state wildlife areas or state trust lands. Activities such as camping, fishing or hunting still require the appropriate reservations or licenses.
You can opt out of the pass during the annual registration process with the DMV online, through a kiosk, by mail or in person with a customer service representative. Same-day reversals can be done at any DMV office.
If you own an Annual State Parks Pass (Aspen Leaf Annual, Vehicle-Affixed Annual, Family Annual or Annual Multiple passes) when you are eligible to buy a $29 Keep Colorado Wild Pass, you can request a prorated refund on the original regularly-priced annual pass. To be eligible for the refund, you must have held the original pass for less than 9 months.
Customers will be refunded to the card on file in the system used for online or phone purchases. All other pass refunds will be paid in the form of a check. Checks may take up to 90 days for customers to receive.
How?Each library location will receive passes, including mobile libraries, for checkout by library patrons. Library patrons will be able to check out the pass for the allotted number of days allowed by the local library. Check with your library for guidelines and policies for returning your pass. Find your local public library at library.ca.gov/branches. The passes are not available at the California State Library, nor do you need a special card to check them out. Watch this video on how to get your pass.
Recreate ResponsiblyGetting into the outdoors is the perfect way to connect with nature, family and friends but it is important to do so responsibly. Please protect yourself and your family by learning about the park you are visiting before heading out, wearing appropriate clothing, staying prepared by bringing the essentials like enough food and water, and knowing your comfort level to avoid injuries. One pass, two vehicles: The annual Discover Pass is transferable between two vehicles. Simply write both plate numbers on the pass. The pass can only be used on one vehicle at a time. Do not duplicate the pass.
How to display the Discover Pass: The pass must be visible in the front windshield of a motor vehicle licensed for street use. For maximum visibility, hang the pass from the rearview mirror with the license plate numbers and expiration date facing the windshield. For vehicles without a windshield, the pass must be displayed in a prominent location on the vehicle.
Penalties. The penalty for not having a Discover Pass is $99. The fine may be reduced to $59 if an individual provides proof of purchase of an annual Discover Pass to the court within 15 days after the notice of violation is written.
The Discover Pass is a motor vehicle permit only. You do not need the pass to access state recreation lands by boat or by non-motorized means (foot, horse, bicycle, etc.). Motor vehicles used to transport recreation equipment, such as vehicles pulling horse or boat trailers, must display the pass. However, the trailers being towed that are carrying the equipment do not need a Discover Pass. Boaters will still need to pay for such services as moorage and waste-pumping.
In addition to the seasonal permit, a special groomed sticker is required to park at Crystal Springs, Easton Reload, Fields Spring, Hyak, Lake Easton, Lake Wenatchee, Pearrygin Lake and Mount Spokane. The special groomed sticker is not required with the daily Sno-Park permit, even on these properties.
Each pass covers entrance fees at lands managed by the National Park Service and US Fish & Wildlife Service and also standard amenity fees (day use fees) at lands managed by the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and US Army Corps of Engineers.
