WHAT RESPONSE SHOULD CHRISTIANS HAVE IN REGARD TO HALLOWEEN?
Isaiah 5:20
Introduction: Many times Bible believers are accused of not wanting to
have fun or don't want anyone else to have fun. This is not true. We can
have fun without bring honor and glory to the Devil. Colossians 3:17, 23
"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." "And whatsoever ye
do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men"
This day called Halloween is not honoring to the Lord. It seems every
part is honoring the devil. The devil is the enemy of everyone. He was in
the Garden of Eden, deceiving Eve. So why would we want to give a day
that honors the devil?
Today I will give you the truth about this day.
I. WHAT IS THE ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN?
Is just a harmless day like people make it out to be? No! Halloween is
Anti-God and Anti-Christ, and Anti-Light. It honors darkness, fear and
demonic Powers. Its history is wicked and dark.
How should we be? 1st Peter 2:9
"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his marvellous light"
1st John 4:18
"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because
fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."
What we now know as Halloween developed from ancient New Year festivals
and festivals of the dead. In pre-Christian Britain, October 31st was
considered, as the eve of New Year. It was when the souls of the dead
especially those who had died in the past year were believed to revisit
their homes. After it became a "Christian" festival, the evil
supernatural characteristic associations continued alongside such customs
as the shaping of a demonic face out of a hollow pumpkin, in which a
candle is placed. In the Halloween which people celebrate today, many of
the practices have a direct association with witchcraft.
The origin of the present-day Halloween celebration is the Celtic Lord of
Death. The Celts lived more than two thousand years ago in what is now
the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Northern France. Their New Year began on
November 1st. A festival that began the previous evening honored the Lord
of Death. The celebration marked the beginning of the season of cold,
darkness, and decay.
II. WHAT ARE THE PROMOTIONS OF HALLOWEEN?
For about a month before the 31st comes around, people are talking about
what they are going to wear. There will be special features on
witchcraft. Newspapers and magazines with are packed with occult related
articles. People become more receptive to this over the years.
Halloween glorifies violence, death, mutilation and gore. Standard
television and video viewing fare this Halloween will be slasher/horror
movies like Dracula, Scream, "Nightmare on Elm Street", "Halloween", and
"Friday the 13th" film series and others.
III. WHAT ARE THE HEROES OF HALLOWEEN?
One is a vampire. Dracula was a real person! Dracula was a maniac
monster, the Hitler of his day. During his six year rule Dracula
massacred 100,000 men, women and children. And how did he impose death?
He killed some of them by breaking them under the wheels of carts;
others, were skinned alive; others placed on stakes, or roasted on red
hot coals placed under them; others punctured with stakes piercing their
bodies. No one was excluded, not even baby. Dracula decapitated, cut
noses, ears, privates and limbs.
Some of the other heroes are werewolves, witches that are channels of
demonic powers, ghost who are supposed to bodiless spirits of dead
people. Then there are dead zombies, devils, and the life goes on!
Where are the good things of life, the wholesome things of life? Where is
blessing and goodness? Where is Jesus, and the works of the Holy Spirit?
They are all made fun of by almost everyone!
IV. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER PARTS OF HALLOWEEN?
The modern custom of 'Trick-or-treat' began in Ireland hundreds of years
ago. A group of farmers went from house to house begging food for the
village Halloween festivities in the name of their ancient gods. Good
luck was promised to generous donors, and threats were made against those
who would not give." Thus these ancient pagan traditions continue today
as youngsters, masquerading as ghosts, skeletons, and demons go
"trick-or-treating"--begging in a sense for food while promising to
refrain from evil deeds.
The apparently harmless lighted pumpkin face or "Jack-O'-Lantern" is an
ancient symbol of a damned soul. Jack-O'-Lanterns were named for a man
called Jack, who supposed that he could not enter heaven or hell. As a
result, he was doomed to wander in darkness with his lantern until
Judgment Day." Folks began hollowing out turnips and pumpkins and placing
lighted candles inside to scare evil spirits from the house.
V. WHAT OVERCOMES THE HELLISHNESS OF HALLOWEEN?
Jesus broke the bonds of the Devil.
Colossians 1:13
"Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us
into the kingdom of his dear Son"
Revelation 11:15
"And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven,
saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord,
and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever."
He came into this dark world and shone for a bit, and then showed us just
how dark we really are by allowing mankind to kill Him. But in that death
come life! And He conquered DEATH by rising from the grave! He delivered
us, saved us and made us free.
John 8:36
"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
He broke the power of Satan on the cross. He defeated Satans power in
our hearts when we were saved. We can help. Satans plans are defeated
one soul at a time. The more people saved, the less darkness there will
be in a community.
Conclusion: What commands do we have as Christians? No Christian Should
Ever take part in the realm of Devilish Darkness! We have been called OUT
of darkness.
1st Peter 2:9
"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his marvellous light"
John 12:46
"I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should
not abide in darkness."
We are not to have ANY fellowship with the spiritual darkness of this
world.
Ephesians 5:11
"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather
reprove them."
We must resist the devil and his influences.
James 4:7
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee
from you."
Psalm 101:3
"I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them
that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me."
