DOGS
Isaiah 58:1
Part 2
Introduction: We looked at a few items about dogs last time. We saw that
dogs look to their master for provisions. This trait should be seen in
the life of the child of God. Many times we think that we have to take
care of ourselves. Yes, the Lord expects us to work. This is a principle
that we should learn and teach our children.
2nd Thessalonians 3:10-12
"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would
not work, neither should he eat." "For we hear that there are some which
walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies." " Now
them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that
with quietness they work, and eat their own bread."
The principle is that if a man does not work, neither should he eat. Now
I know that there many reasons why men cannot work. One reason is that
there may not be jobs. The first time I came to North Carolina was I
could not find a job in West Virginia. Some times there is some real
physical disability that prevents a man from working. The Bible allows
for these but many people are so lazy that they would not take a job in a
pie factory tasting pies for a living.
Some of our needs can be met by our Saviour. We should look to Him for
each day for His care.
Not only is a dog loyal. He will follow his master every where. If Peter
had been as loyal as a dog, he would have not denied the Lord Jesus.
Before going further, I want make another comparison between a dog and
cat. WOMEN ARE LIKE CATS, MEN ARE LIKE DOGS
What are the qualities of a cat? Cats do what they want. They rarely
listen to you. They're unpredictable. They pout when they are not happy.
When you want to play, they want to be left alone. They expect you to
cater to their every whim. They're careful and moody. They leave hair
everywhere. They drive you nuts and cost you money. Conclusion: They're
tiny little women in fur coats.
What are the qualities of a dog? Dogs lie around all day, sprawled on the
most comfortable piece of furniture in the house. They can hear a package
of food opening from the other side of the house, but don't hear you when
you're in the same room. They can look dumb and lovable at the same time.
They growl when they're not happy. When you want to be alone, they want
to play. They never have enough toys and they leave them everywhere.
Conclusion: They're tiny little men in fur coats.
Now let's look at a few traits of a dog and how we should be like them in
these traits.
III. DOGS ARE PROTECTIVE.
We should be like a junkyard dog. Anyone or anything that comes by the
junkyard, he will bark and alert you. I told you about our little dog
that had when the boys were young. She only barked when there was really
something outside. That was showed that she was trying to protect us from
danger. She could not help us like a big dog but it was her barking that
protected us because she heard what we could not.
We had a neighborhood hood named Sadie. She was a Belgian shepherd. She
loved my boys and my boys loved her. One time one of the church boys came
over and was playing with my boys. They were playing tag. The young man
got ready to tag my son. As he got ready to touch my son, she took his
arm in his mouth. My boys told her that he was okay and she released him
immediately. She was protecting my son.
Let me give one more story of protecting of a dog. When I was in the
police academy, the police department brought the police dog over. His
name was Magnum. In the demonstration, an officer had a gun with blanks
in it. He pointed at the canine officer. The dog ran toward the man. He
put the pistol and stepped away from it. So the dog saw the man step away
from the pistol so the dog went after the pistol. Why? While that man was
near the pistol, the pistol is still a threat and the man was not. We
started to laugh but the canine officer said that the dog what did was
the most important. He protected the officer by trying to remove the
danger.
How does this relate to us as being protective?
Isaiah 56:10-11
"His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs,
they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber." "Yea, they
are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that
cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his
gain, from his quarter.
What is the value is of a "dumb dog" when danger is near and those in
peril are not aware of their danger when it does not bark? The answer
would be "none."
There are many dangers in this world that we know will destroy them. Hell
is awaiting them and we have the answer. The only answer is the Lord
Jesus coming into your heart and saving you from your sin. When we don't
tell the story of Jesus, then we are no better than a dumb dog.
In the Bible we find the word "watchmen". This man was the one who was to
cry out when an enemy approached. Isaiah 58:1
"Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my
people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins."
Ezekiel 3:17
"Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel:
therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me."
Who are God's "watchmen"? It is what every believer should be. As we grow
older in Christ, the more the Lord will hold us responsible for giving
the gospel story. This does not just mean a pastor, Christian workers and
every missionary. This means every one who is a believer.
A silent watchman is more dangerous than no watchman is because people
feel a sense of security if they know a watchman is on the job 24 hours a
day.
Conclusion: We must not be silent witnesses. We are not to be dumb dogs
but alert dogs that warns the lost that there is a hell to shun and
heaven to gain.
