THREE Ps IN THE POD OF THANKSGIVING
Psalm 100
Introduction: This Thursday is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day began with
the Pilgrims in 1621. The governor of the colony appointed a day of
thanksgiving, a day of feasting and expressing gratitude to God. In 1863,
President Abraham Lincoln established the annual celebration of
Thanksgiving when he issued a proclamation that the last Thursday in
November be set apart as a day of prayer and thanksgiving.
I know that Thanksgiving is basically an American holiday but it is seen
in many places of the Bible. Many times in the Bible there were many
celebrations of Thanksgiving. When Moses and the children of Israel
crossed the Red Sea and the Egyptians were drown, Moses and the children
celebrated with song and praise. This is one of many.
What bothers me and should bother you should be that everyone has three
hundred sixty-five days a year and they can only be thankful on one day
of the year. Everyday should be a day of thanksgiving. We should be
thankful what the Lord did in the past. The Lord Jesus died for us almost
two thousand years ago. He saved us so many years ago. He provided that
salvation in the past.
We should be praising Him for the present. He loves us. He listens to our
prayers. He leads us by His Word. He lifts our burdens. Let's look at
this in these two verses. Psalm 116:12
"What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?"
How should we show the Lord our gratitude?
Psalm 116:17
"I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon
the name of the LORD."
We should be praising Him for the future. We can thank Him that He is
coming soon. We can praise Him that we will have a new body when He comes
for us. And we can praise Him for our new home when He comes for us.
I ran across this illustration of thanksgiving. A pastor from New Bern
was on a mission trip on the island of Tobago. While there he led worship
in a leper colony. They were nearing the end of the service and had time
for one more song so they asked for a request. One lady lifted a
fingerless hand in the air to request a song. Her nose and ears were
entirely gone. The leprosy had eaten away her lips as well. She asked
with joy, "Can we sing Count Your Blessings?" She was ready to give
thanks always for all things!
Today I give you three truths in regards to thanksgiving.
I. THE PRAISE OF THANKSGIVING
A. We see it in the words of the scripture.
Psalm 26:7
"That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy
wondrous works."
Psalm 50:14
"Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High"
Psalm 69:30
"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with
thanksgiving."
Psalm 95:2
"Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful
noise unto him with psalms."
Philippians 4:6
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."
Colossians 4:2
"Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;"
B. We see it in the words of saved folks. Some time you should take time
with an older saint and ask he or she what they find in the praise when
they think of thanksgiving.
II. THE PURPOSE OF THANKSGIVING
I was thinking of three items that show the purpose of thanksgiving.
A. It helps us to recall the blessings of the Lord. It is why we sing
songs like "Count your Blessings". Many times we sing without thinking.
The time of year is a perfect time to sing those songs and actually think
what we are what we are singing. What kind of blessings can we recall?
First of all we should recall from what God saved us. He saved us from
the person, power and penalty of sin. We can recall the blessings of what
we read in the scriptures. We can recall the blessing of being in church,
learning the scriptures and loving the brothers in Christ in the church.
The material blessings would be very hard to recall completely. We have
homes, food, vehicles and clothes just to recall a few. Just about the
time you feel sorry for yourself with health issues, come with me a few
hours at the nursing home and you will see the people with greater health
issues than you have.
B. It helps us to rejoice in our Lord.
Psalm 5:11
"But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever
shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy
name be joyful in thee."
Psalm 9:2
"I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O
thou most High."
Psalm 20:5
"We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set
up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions."
It is amazing what praising can do.
C. It helps to remind us to pray. Thanksgiving gives that opportunity to
pray and thank our Lord for His bountifulness. We don't deserve anything
but He gives us so much. I was thinking about a song from the Psalms that
Miss Wanda and I sang several times over the years. Psalm 25:1-4, 7
"Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul." "O my God, I trust in thee:
let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me." "Yea, let
none that wait on thee be ashamed" " Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me
thy paths." "Remember not the sins of my youth"
III. THE PRACTICE OF THANKSGIVING
We should praise the Lord daily. He gives us blessings daily even in
those days when we seem to be the lowest. All we must do is look for
them.
Psalm 72:15
"And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba:
prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be
praised."
A. The practice of thanksgiving can be sung. The book of Psalms was
Israel's songbook. But I was reminded this week that they did not carry a
copy of the Psalm with them but carried them in their hearts and sung the
same to the Lord.
Psalm 75:1
"Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for
that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare."
When you read and master the book of Psalm, here is a thought given me
this week. This book was built upon our relationship with our Lord. Spend
time in this book regularly to build upon your relationship with the
Lord.
B. The practice of thanksgiving is seen in the lives of believers. You
should live in such a way that others can thank God by your life.
Conclusion: May our lives be one of thanksgiving every day. Are you
willing to count your blessings like the woman from the leper colony?
