WONDERFUL JESUS
Isaiah 9:6,7
Introduction: There have been many wonderful people in my life. My wife
and boys may not be special to others but I know them to be wonderful
people. But the most wonderful person who ever entered my life was and
still is the Lovely Lord Jesus. I met Him on May 10, 1972 at a quarter to
nine on the right hand side of the altar at Grace Baptist Church on Droop
Mt., WV.
I can not describe adequately how wonderful the Lord Jesus really is. But
I want to try in my own finite way to share with you five ways in which I
find the Lovely Lord Jesus is WONDERFUL. I believe the greatest word that
you could ever describe Jesus is the word "Wonderful". I wonder what went
on in the mind of Isaiah when he penned these words. Maybe His mind went
back to Isaiah chapter six when he saw the Lord high and lifted up. After
all, he got a glimpse into the throne room of glory. Who else could be
described of the Triune Godhead who could be described as wonderful.
Wonderful is a rather weak word if you really concentrate on the Lord
Jesus but what other word really fits but "WONDERFUL". The truth of the
matter is this: nothing else fits. Certainly no one else fits.
Today I want to lift up Jesus. Jesus himself told us in John 12:32 "And
I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." Paul had
the wonderful ambition which is found in Philippians 3:10 "that I might
know Him". No other name but the name of Jesus as the songwriter tried to
put into words. Words are totally inadequate in describing who is
"WONDERFUL".
Isaiah says, "His name shall be called Wonderful," and we sing with
throbbing hearts, "Jesus is the sweetest Name I know, and He's just as
the same as His lovely." He was foretold by the prophets, conceived by
the Holy Ghost, announced by the angels, worshipped by the shepherds,
adored by the wise men and loved by millions now for over two thousands
years! "And hail the power of Jesus' name, let angels prostrate fall.
Bring forth the royal diadem and crown Him, Lord of all. Bring forth the
royal diadem and crown Him, Lord of all."
So how is He WONDERFUL?
I. HE IS WONDERFUL IN HIS NAMES.
Philippians 2:9-11
"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which
is above every name:" "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;"
"And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father."
Seven hundred times is the name of Jesus mentioned in the New Testament.
In Twenty-four of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, they start
with the Lord Jesus' name. In Matthew in our English Bible, the 7th word
is Jesus and the 7th from the last word in the New Testament is Jesus. It
any mistake that the first Book of the New Testament and the only book of
our English New Testament that has seven letters in it would have as its
seventh word JESUS with the number seven being the number of completion.
II. HE IS WONDERFUL IN HIS NATURE.
1st Peter 2:21
"For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us,
leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps"
What His nature does not have any sin in it, any sarcasm in it or any
snares in it
What His nature does have the greatest sweetness in it all sufficiency in
it, the abundant substance in it, the amazing strength in it and
unquestionable shelter in it.
III. HE IS WONDERFUL IN HIS NURTURING
2nd Peter 3:18
"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen."
We have many areas that He nurtures us. I can only mentioned two today.
A. He helps us grow with his commands
1. "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel"
2. "Love one another"
3. "Follow Me"
B. He helps us grow in communicating with us- THE WORD OF GOD. He never
communities any thing to us that is contrary to this Bible. He desires
and really demands holiness from us. He also deserves holiness from us.
This Bible is a Holy Book, which has within its pages the Words that we
need to live godly and soberly in this present world.
IV. HE IS WONDERFUL IN HIS NEARNESS
Isaiah 43:2
"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through
the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the
fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon
thee."
In times of trials, He is near. In times of triumphs, He is near. In
times of tragedy, He is near. In times of temptation, He is near. In
times of teaching, He is near. In times of thanksgiving, He is near. In
times of truth, He is near.
What am I trying to say? Jesus is just as close as His name. He is only a
prayer away. He is the one the Bible says sticketh closer than a brother
is. He is the only who knows our frame and feels the infirmities that we
have for He lived them without sin.
V. HE IS WONDERFUL IN HIS NAILS
John 19:16-18
"Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took
Jesus, and led him away." "And he bearing his cross went forth into a
place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew
Golgotha:" "Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either
side one, and Jesus in the midst."
We should be preaching about the grace of God and bloody Calvary when
trying to reach sinners on a regular basis. Why should we devote his life
to preaching about bloody Calvary? Let me give three reasons why Jesus is
wonderful in His nails and you will be able to answer your question
yourself.
A. He took my place. 2nd Corinthians 5:21
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be
made the righteousness of God in him."
I deserved hell. I was a religious sinner who was clueless to the price
that Jesus paid that day over two thousand years ago. When He was hung on
that old rugged, Roman, rough cross, He saw in the future and saw that
they was a boy born in the home of John Michael Walls and Laura Moore
Walls and he would born a sinner. He told the Father that He would die in
my place. But He did not just my sins but the sins of the whole world.
When He died, two worlds were in an uproar. The chickens went to bed at
noontime. The earth quaked. The angels were held back. Noontime was as
black as midnight. God was taking the place of sinful man so He could go
to Heaven.
B. He took my pain. I deserved to go to hell and suffer all the agony and
pain of hell but He took it. He took the cat of nine tails. He took the
spit, slaps, and suffering of the cross.
C. He took my punishment: Why? John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Conclusion: It is not a mistake that the Lord had the book of Psalms to
begin with these words "Blessed is the man" and "Let every thing that
hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD." We are blessed and we
ought to praise the Lord today for our Wonderful Saviour- Jesus Christ
the righteous.
