WHY WE SUPPORT JEWISH MISSIONS!
Genesis 12:1-4
Introduction: The Lord has always wanted His people to be separate from
the world.
2nd Corinthians 6:17-18
"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a
Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord
Almighty."
These are just a few passages to prove this thought. The Lords call of
Abraham marks the start of the Jewish nation. The Lord had get Abraham to
leave the Ur of the Chaldees. The land that the Lord was Abraham leaving
was a land of heathen practices and demonic religious rites. We are not
sure why the Lord chose Abraham to be the father of His chosen people. It
is one of those secret things of the Lord.
Let me say this: Your sin will affect your family and those who go beyond
them. (Numbers 32:23 "be sure your sin will find you out.") When Abraham
had the child by Hagar, he cursed his seed forever with the nations that
are the enemies of Israel today that live around them. All the Arab
nations around Israel are the descendents of Ishmael. But this still does
not give them right to the land God promised the birth of Isaac.
Can you imagine what Abraham told Sarah when He announced their move. I
imagine it was probably like this: "Sarah, the Lord told me to move
today." "Okay where to, Abraham?" "I dont know." "How long will take to
get there?" "I dont know." "What kind of house will we get?" "I dont
know." "What do you know?" "I know that the Lord promised to lead and
guide me and that is enough for me." I am sure that the unanswered
question put that little bit fear of the uncertainty. Hebrews 11:8-10
tells us this: "By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a
place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he
went out, not knowing whither he went." "By faith he sojourned in the
land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with
Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:" "For he looked
for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God." It is
a well-known fact that ladies like the security of knowing all the facts
about moving. They dont like uncertainties. But this couple believed
God. James 2:23 "And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham
believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was
called the Friend of God."
Since the second year that I came here, this church has supported Jewish
missions. This coming February I will be here for twenty years. The
support of Jewish missions is especially true during the "Christmas
Present for Jesus" Jewish missions offering. The truth that brought me to
the stark realization of the importance of Jewish missions was Genesis
12:3. "And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth
thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." Romans
1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power
of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and
also to the Greek." I want to preach a message on the importance of
support Jewish missions. This is to be an encouragement to you as you
decide what the Lord lays on your heart to give to this offering.
I want to give you three reasons why we should support Jewish missions.
These are simple yet biblical reasons to do so.
I. WE SUPPORT JEWISH MISSIONS BECAUSE WE ARE DEBTORS.
Romans 1:14
"I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise,
and to the unwise."
A. We owe our salvation to the Jewish nation. They rejected Jesus as
their promised Messiah. John 1:11-12
"He came unto his own, and his own received him not." "But as many as
received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to
them that believe on his name:"
Salvation was for the Jews first.
John 4:22
"Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is
of the Jews."
The Jewish people had been promised a Messiah who would save them from
their sins. But they liked the formalism of their religion better. They
worked at their worship yet missed really worshiping the Lord in the
emptiness of their religious ceremonies.
B. We owe our salvation to the first church who was made up chiefly of
Jewish believers.
Acts 8:4
"Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the
word."
1. The apostles were Jews.
2. The first people saved were Jews.
Acts 2:5
"And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every
nation under heaven."
Acts 2:41
"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day
there were added unto them about three thousand souls."
Thank God they went everywhere preaching the Word. People all over heard
the marvelous story of the Lamb that was slain for their sins. They got
saved and passed on the message to someone else and it went everywhere.
C. We owe our salvation to the one who died for us- a Jew our Lord Jesus.
I cannot understand why hatred for Jewish peoples. If you read the Gospel
story even with an open mind, you can see clearly that everyone involved
were responsible for Christs death not just the Jews.
II. WE SUPPORT JEWISH MISSIONS BECAUSE WE HAVE SOME DESIRES.
Vs. 3a
Psalm 37:4
"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of
thine heart."
A. We desire the blessings of revival.
2nd Chronicles 7:14
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and
pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear
from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
In our desire for revival, we must be made ourselves humble. To be humble
means to be bent down or brought low. But we must pray. This must be
prayer that gets to the heart of the matter. It is the prayer that is not
non-specific in nature. It is prayer that calls upon that true God of
heaven. It is that prayer that is broken over its sinfulness. It is
broken over our pride. It is prayer that know the remedy to sin, the
blood of Jesus Christ.
B. We desire the blessings that are refined.
Romans 8:28-29
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love
God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." "For whom he
did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of
his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren."
Our attitudes need to be refined. Our actions need to be refined. Our
words need to be refined. Our worship needs to be refined. Our wisdom
needs to be refined.
C. We desire the blessings of refilling.
Malachi 3:10
"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in
mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will
not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that
there shall not be room enough to receive it."
Luke 6:38
"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and
shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For
with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you
again. "
Not all of Gods blessings will be material in nature. They could be in
reference to your health. Wonder why certain things dont seem to wear
out. It could be Gods blessing on your life.
III. WE SUPPORT JEWISH MISSIONS BECAUSE WE ARE DETERMINED.
A. We are determined to be the right kind of people. We want to be known
as people who love His people. I want to see all people to be saved but
to see Jewish people saved is one of my greatest joys in my Christian
life. I remember seeing the video after one of the trips that
International Board of Jewish Missions took into the Ukraine and seeing
people accepting those Bibles and getting saved. Then to see the tears
that ran down the faces of our own folks knowing that they had a part in
that effort has been one of my greatest memories as a pastor.
We are determined to do the right thing. We should be people who do the
right thing every time until the right thing becomes the normal thing.
Colossians 3:23-24
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;"
"Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance:
for ye serve the Lord Christ."
James 4:17
"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is
sin."
Conclusion: I want to challenge you to do more this year for Jewish
missions. Lets be a channel of blessing to those people who are Gods
chosen even though they rejected Him. Every Jewish person who is won to
Christ is a potential missionary. We cant lose when we have the promise
of God in these verses today.
