WHATSOEVER HE SAITH UNTO YOU, DO IT.
John 2:1-11
Introduction: This is the first recorded miracle in the public ministry
of the Lord Jesus. We find in this account the Lord, his disciples, and
his mother at a wedding. This must have been a relative of Mary's because
of some things said in the passage such as the servants coming to Mary
when the wine ran out. Our passage is broken up into three parts, which
we will discuss briefly as possible.
We see the WEDDING in verses 1-5. A wedding is a joyous occasion in most
cases. This is a special time in which a man and woman who are in love
with each other and are joined together in marriage in the sight of God.
I remember many of the details of my own wedding like it was yesterday. I
remember all the blunders and blessings of that day. I can see in my
mind's eye my bride coming down the aisle. Boy, was I scared. It was not
the idea of getting married but the responsible that I was entering into.
(On the light side though, I remember Wanda kicking the microphone wire.)
If you ever heard our wedding tape, you would probably not recognize my
voice. I want the Lord to teach me to love my wife more as the years go
by.
When I think of wedding, I think the marriage of Christ and the church
that will be taking place at anytime. Think about the joy and shouting
that will take place in that great day. Instead of every one looking at
the bride like people normally do at a wedding, all eyes will be upon the
bridegroom JESUS CHRIST.
I want to also to point out that the Lord Jesus was not disrespecting to
his mother in verse 4. He was reminding her that He would be the one who
was to choose when his hour was to come.
In verses 6-10 we see that the WINE. This is one of the misunderstood
passages of scriptures by unsaved men. It is the changing of water into
wine. Many people think that Jesus made fermented wine in which men could
get drunk with. People who carefully study the Bible know beyond a shadow
of doubt that Jesus did not make a wine which men would get drunk. Why?
It is because Habakkuk 2:15 is still in the Bible.
"Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to
him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their
nakedness!"
Here is a good rule of thumb when dealing with a subject like this: WHEN
YOU DON'T KNOW THE WINE, KNOW THE MAKER. The maker of this wine is none
other than Jehovah, the great I AM, the Omnipotent, Omnipresent, and the
Omniscience God of the universe. This unfermented wine was the fruit of
heavenly wine.
Verse 11 shows the WITNESS that showed how the Lord Jesus was exhibiting
his God nature to the disciples. This was the beginning of his public
ministry. For the next 3 1/2 years, the Lord Jesus showed that he was in
control over every element of nature.
But I want to call your attention to a phrase that I want to preach about
that we find in verse five, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. Mary was
giving sound advice to the servants that day that is important to us
today.
I. WHEN SHOULD YOU DO WHAT JESUS SAITH UNTO YOU?
A. You should do what Jesus saith unto you immediately. Why? It is for
these reasons. It is because when you delay, souls are dying. It is
because when you delay, Satan is delighted. And last of all, it is
because when you delay, your service for the Lord is dropped.
B. You should do what Jesus saith unto you obediently. Why? Once again I
have three reasons. First of all, Obedience shows that you really love
the Lord. Secondly, Obedience shows that you really are looking for the
Lord's return. Last of all but not the least reason, it is that obedience
shows that you are laboring for the Lord.
You should do what Jesus saith unto you humbly. Why? We are just saved
dirt which God has called for His divine purposes and pleasure.
1st Corinthians 15:10
"But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed
upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all:
yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me."
II. WHERE SHOULD YOU DO WHAT JESUS SAITH UNTO YOU?
A. You should do it where the Lord plants you. I came here to pastor a
church so this is the place God has planted me. Some of you have come
here for various reasons and you have stayed, so this is the place the
Lord planted you. This speaks of doing what God called you to do at your
home, job, store, or the place of relaxation.
B. You should do it through the Local Church. The Church is God's agency
to do His will. That is one reason why we come together each week.
III. WHY SHOULD YOU DO WHAT JESUS SAITH UNTO YOU?
I just gave you the positive side of this but I would not be true the
call of God to preach if I did not showed the negative side. When you do
not do what He tells you then it is called disobedience. I am going show
you two thoughts in regards to disobedience. The Bible example is Jonah.
Lets turn to the book of Jonah.
Disobedience is sin. Jonah 1:1-3
"Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,"
"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their
wickedness is come up before me." "But Jonah rose up to flee unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he
found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went
down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the
LORD."
God told Jonah to go and preach to the people of Nineveh. They were
wicked and vicious men who were know to kill people for no good reason
and God called him there but instead he disobeyed. James 4:17
"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is
sin."
B. Disobedience is shameful. Jonah 1:4-9
"But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty
tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken." "Then the
mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth
the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But
Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast
asleep." "So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest
thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think
upon us, that we perish not." "And they said every one to his fellow,
Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is
upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah." "Then said they
unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us;
What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country?
and of what people art thou?" "And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and
I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry
land."
Here he was a prophet of God and he is endangering the whole crew. It was
shameful after he revealed who he was and his attitude toward the people
of Nineveh. As far as he was concerned, they could all go to hell. That
is shameful.
IV. WHO SHOULD DO WHAT JESUS SAITH?
Every sinner person should do what Jesus tells him or her to do.
Matthew 11:28-30
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give
you rest." "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and
lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." "For my yoke is
easy, and my burden is light."
Jesus wants you to be saved.
B. Every saved person should do what Jesus tells him or her to do. It is
because His blood redeems us. It is because we are responsible for the
souls of men; for the service for the Lord and for the singing of praise
unto the Lord.
V. HOW SHOULD YOU DO WHAT JESUS SAITH UNTO YOU?
We do this by living every day the way that He has said in the Word of
God. John 17:17
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
B. We do this by giving the way He has said in the Word of God. Luke 6:38
"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and
shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For
with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you
again."
Conclusion: Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it. This is the best advice
for the child of God.
