DOGS
Judges 7:5
Part 3
Introduction: I found this funny little story about a dog. A Chihuahua in
Africa sees a lion running in his direction. Thinking fast, he sees some
bones and lays down to chew on them. When the lion is ready to attack,
the Chihuahua says: "The lion I just finished eating was so-o-o
delicious!"
The lion quickly stopped, and left intensely frightened, thinking: "What
a wild dog! In a little while, he'll eat me too!"
A monkey, who'd been watching the whole scene, went running after the
lion to tell him that he'd been tricked. Furious, the lion growled:
"Foolish dog! I'll get him!"
The Chihuahua sees the Lion coming back for him, this time with the
monkey riding on his back. He thinks, "Traitor monkey! What am I going to
do now?" Instead of running away, he lay down with his back to them, as
if he hadn't seen them coming.
When the Lion was about to attack him, the dog said: "That lazy monkey!
It's been half an hour since I sent him to get me another lion and he
still hasn't come back!"
We saw that dogs are loyal. We also saw that a dog looks to his master
for his provisions.
Last time we saw that dogs were protective. We are the best friend a lost
man, woman, boy or girl has when we give them the Gospel and they get
saved. Hell is waiting for every lost person. They are not waiting to be
condemned but condemned already.
John 3:18
"He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is
condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God."
It is our life as believers to warn sinners of the judgment to come and
heaven to gain when they get saved. This week in my devotions I read
something that should be a blessing to you too.
Luke 18:28-30
"Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee." "And he said
unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house,
or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of Gods
sake," "Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in
the world to come life everlasting."
This passage falls after the rich young ruler walks away from the eternal
life he wanted. Peter is not bragging here. We know this because Peter
did not say "I left all and followed thee." He said we have left all and
followed thee. Jesus knows that this is not bragging because He did not
correct Peter. He told them that since they left all and that God is not
a debtor to any man. He will reward us both here and in eternity. What
are the blessings that we will be rewarded here? The first one that came
to my mind was souls that we saved as result of the efforts of our church
to win folks to Christ. Every other reward seems to be small in view of
that reward.
Today we will look at one more positive point of a dog.
IV. DOGS SHOULD BE ALERT TO DANGER.
In our text here is the gathering of an army by Gideon. Those who lapped
up the water like a dog were not chosen because they were not alert like
they should be to the danger of the enemy.
Let me use these simple illustrations about dogs that were alert to
danger. A little known fact, dogs have served in both of the World Wars,
the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. In combat dogs have alerted troops to
booby traps, mine tunnels and weapons cache, as well as warned of
ambushes.
One dog hero in Italy in World War II was named Chips. The dog was
responsible for the capture of 12 prisoners-of-war. Another, in World War
I, a Pit Bull named Stubby, warned troops of a gas attack and held a
German soldier until troops arrived. Stubby became the most decorated
canine of the war, was given two medals and the honorary title of
sergeant. Presidents Wilson Harding and Coolidge also invited Stubby to
the White House.
Another dog in World War II, a German Shepherd named Caesar, nine times
carried messages from one point to another when the use of a radio might
have alerted the enemy to the American soldiers' positions and been
fatal. Caesar also once awakened American soldiers in time to throw back
a live hand grenade. Eight Japanese soldiers were later found dead as a
result. Caesar was twice shot while warning Americans of the approaching
enemy.
It was said that there would be more than fifty thousand names on the
Wall of those who died in Vietnam in Washington DC if it had not been for
the dogs who were with the troops in there.
What should we be alert to in this life as a believer?
A. We should be alert to the wiles of the Devil.
1st Peter 5:8-9
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring
lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" "Whom resist stedfast
in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your
brethren that are in the world."
Ephesians 6:11
"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the
wiles of the devil."
What are the wiles of the devil? This is the tricks of the devil. The
devil will try to deceive you. He tries to discourage you. He lies to
you. He tells you that Jesus is not going to help you. He showed his
tricks in the Garden of Eden and has not changed his tricks in the past
six thousand years.
B. We should be alert to how easy it for us to think more of ourselves
than we should.
Romans 12:3
"For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among
you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to
think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of
faith."
1st Corinthians 15:10
"But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed
upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all:
yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me."
It is easy to think that you are something now. But we are nothing but
sinners saved by grace. Jesus deserves all the credit for my changes in
my life.
C. We should be alert to the people who are beyond the doors of this
church. When we step out the doors, we have stepped in the mission field.
This is one reason why we are here.
Conclusion: Today we should be able to think of one person who is lost
that we know. Today we should pray and ask the Lord to help us to win
that person to Christ before the year is over with Gods help.
Next time we will look at some of the negatives in regards to dogs.
