Today's Prayer
Dear Father in Heaven, This day I look up and remember how it is you
who created all and who owns the cattle upon the hills, the water that
springs from the earth, the skies that span our view, and everything
good. It is you who can provide for and bless the earth and the
inhabitants thereof. I pray for the many people who are in difficult
circumstances right now and need a touch to help them with their basic
needs. I pray for those who need financial income to pay their living
expenses, those who need jobs to bring in that income, who need good
health to be able to do those jobs; and for those whose jobs do not
provide sufficient income for their needs. I pray also for those who
have the income, but do not know how to properly manage it for the
best outcome. And I pray for those who have much and can give much.
Please, connect the right people with jobs, and the right people with
the right people, to do what needs to be done. I pray that you will
meet every need; that you will bless the lives of those who follow
your guidance and those who are thankful for what you provide. Hear
the cries of the needy. I pray you will bless those who give from the
abundance you have allowed them to have, for sharing and ministering
in ways that others cannot. Thank you, Father, for hearing my prayer.
In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Jehovah Jireh
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
10-20-2008

"But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my
brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger,
whom you sent to take care of my needs" (Phil 2:25-26).

I got onto the bus with the other delegates attending a workplace
conference in South Africa. It was a season in my life in which I had
experienced many losses both financially and relationally. God was
stripping away the old wineskin and creating a new one. One of the
things He was teaching me was that He - not my skills, not my work -
was my provider of financial needs during this season of training.

God provided me the means to attend the conference. One day before the
registration deadline, a man came to my office and gave me $2500 and
told me I was to go. Now, a man had just placed an envelope into my
hand. "Here, God says I'm to give this to you. Inside are 10 crisp
American $100 bills - $1000!" The man was from Kuwait.

Every believer needs to come to know Christ as their provider. Jehovah
Jireh means God is my provider. When God called the Israelites from
their place of slavery they had to walk through the desert. There is
no way to earn a living in the desert. So God provided manna each day
for them. Sometimes He even brought water from rocks. They had to
experience a new way of gaining provision that was not rooted in sweat
and toil. God had to demonstrate His faithfulness as Jehovah Jireh to
His people.

There were times when Paul's tent making business was not the way God
would provide for him. God often uses others as His instrument of
provision. So, God sent Epaphroditus to take care of Paul's needs.

Do you know God as your provider? Do you have a need? Place your need
before the Lord today and ask Him to demonstrate His faithfulness as
Jehovah Jireh

VERSE:
When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue
is
wise.
-- Proverbs 10:19

THOUGHT:
We are constantly filling our world with noise. If it is not the
sound
of our own voices, then turn up some other noise to fill the silence.
With the proliferation of radio talk shows, we are even given the
opportunity to sound off to that noise. Unfortunately, quite often
we
say things that are harmful, hurtful, or foolish. God's wisdom
reminds
us to learn to hold our tongue and let silence rule over more of our
time rather than the noisy words that so often clutter our world.

PRAYER:
Holy God, please give me more wisdom so that I can keep my mouth shut
more often and my ears more attentive to the needs of others. Purify
my heart and cleanse my speech so that it will be helpful to others
and bring glory to you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen

Today's Prayer
Dear God, Your Word tells me (in 1 Corinthians 2:14-15) that “the
natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they
are
foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judges all things,
yet
he himself is judged of no man.” And I know that your Word “is quick,
and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to
the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow,
and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews
4:12). Please give me spiritual discernment through the power and
indwelling of your Holy Spirit within me and through the wisdom of
your Word. As I pray and read your Word, and as I rely on your
guidance each day, I pray that my eyes will see, my heart will feel,
my ears will hear, and my mind will comprehend what you are teaching
me…and that I will be able to discern what is of the your spirit and
what is not; what is good and what is evil; what is truth and what is
a lie. May my spirit bear witness with my brothers and sisters in
Christ. Please protect us from the evil one and his tricks, keep our
families safe from all harm, and direct our paths each day. I pray
these things in the name of my Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Seeing Backward
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
10-19-2008

"O LORD, when you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm; but
when you hid your face, I was dismayed" (Ps 30:7).

It is often difficult to recognize the hand of God when we are in the
midst of adversity. We often feel God has hidden His face from us.
When the Lord takes us through deep valleys, there will be fruit from
the deep valley that we cannot see. You must press into Him with all
you have during this time.

God uses the deep valley to frame our lives to create a change in our
nature, not just a change in habits. The depth and width of our
valley
is often an indicator of the level of calling and influence we will
have on others in the future. Our adversity is not just for us, but
others who will be in our future path of influence. This is not very
comforting when you are in the middle of the valley, but know this is
a truth in the Kingdom.

It is often years later when we discover the wisdom of God and why He
intentionally led us through the dark valley. Life is often lived
forward, but understood backward. It is not until we are down the
road
and we stand on the mountain looking back at through valley that we
can appreciate the terrain God has allowed us to scale and the
spiritual deposits He has made in our life while we were there. "He
reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into the
light" (Job 12:22). When you begin to realize this, you sit back and
breathe a sigh of relief because you know that God was in control all
along. It didn't seem like it at the time, but He was.

Do you find yourself in the valley? Now is the time to fully trust
Him
to guide you to higher ground.

Today's Prayer
Dear God, This morning I remembered that children's song that goes "I
am a promise. I am a possibility. I am a promise, with a capital P. I
am a great big bundle of potentiality..." In Jesus, I am a great big
bundle of potentiality. I pray that you would fill me with your wisdom
and guide me in your will. I pray that I will be obedient to you and
keep my focus on you. I ask this so that I will reach the potential
you have planned for me. In Jesus' precious name I pray, amen.

His Vision, His Way, In His Timing
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
10-27-2008

"Then God said, 'Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love,
and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt
offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about'" (Gen 22:2).

Have you ever wanted something so bad that you would do almost
anything to get it? Have you ever gotten so close to fulfilling a
dream only to have it disappear right before your eyes? Such was the
case for Abraham.

God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations. He
would have a son. However, Abraham panicked when Sarah aged beyond
child bearing years and tried to help God by birthing Ishmael through
Sarah's servant, who was not the promised son. Eventually, Isaac was
born, who was the promised son.

However, God tells Abraham to sacrifice his only son on an altar to
demonstrate his obedience to God. Truly, this is one of the hardest
instructions given to one of God's people in all of scripture. It
compares only to the Heavenly Father sacrificing His own Son. God
intervenes and allows a lamb to take his place, symbolizing the Lamb
of God as a prophetic sign of what is to take place in the future.

God often births a vision in our lives only to allow it to die first
before the purest version of the vision is manifested. This has
happened several times in my own journey. Oswald Chambers observes,
"God's method always seems to be vision first, and then reality, but
in between the vision and the reality there is often a deep valley of
humiliation. How often has a faithful soul been plunged into a like
darkness when after the vision comes the test. When God gives a vision
and darkness follows, waiting on God will bring you into accordance
with the vision He has given if you await His timing. Otherwise, you
try to do away with the supernatural in God's undertakings. Never try
to help God fulfill His word."*

When God's vision is finally birthed, nothing will stop it. Our job is
to allow God to birth His vision through us His way and in His
timing.

Today's Prayer
Dear God, I need to feel your peace in my life today. You have
promised peace, and I have experienced your perfect peace beyond all
understanding in times of life that are just plan hard. There is so
much going on in this world, in my country, my community; so many
prayer requests and needs in my church family; and special needs in my
own family. Please continue to touch us, have mercy upon us, guide us
and protect us. Please help us to feel your presence and experience
your peace in the midst of it all. Thank you, loving and merciful God.
In the Savior's name I pray, amen.

God Is Not About YOUR Success
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
11-02-2008

"I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground
and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces
many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who
hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life" (John
12:24-26).

God is all about your death so that HIS success can be realized
through you! This is why the Church is having such little impact -
there are too many believers who have not yet died to their old nature
so that Christ can live fully through them. When believers come to the
end of themselves they will lose their lives to Him and live through
the power of the Holy Spirit and begin to see the reality of a living
gospel that impacts lives, workplaces, cities and nations.

"Much of modern Christian enterprise is 'Ishmael.' Born not of God,
but of an inordinate desire to do God's will in our own way - the one
thing our Lord never did," said Oswald Chambers. The psalmist
describes what it means to live in our own strength:

"Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless
the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In
vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat - for he
grants sleep to those he loves" (Ps 127:1-2).

How does one die so that Christ can be our all and all? It usually
takes a crisis of significant proportions for most people to
relinquish the control of their lives. It means we come to the end of
ourselves and our striving to control the events in our lives and we
finally come to the place where we can say, "Lord, I surrender. Please
take full control of my life."

Have you come to this place with God in your life? Let go and let God
make you a success His way.

Dear God, You own even the cattle on a thousand hills. You made
everything...Oh Mighty Creator...and all is yours. You have provided
abundantly for your creation. I'm sorry that we have not taken care of
so many of the resources you have given us. I'm sorry for our

Relating to those Different from Us
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
10-31-2008

"The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan
woman. How can you ask me for a drink?'" (John 4:9).

Do you find it difficult to relate to others who are different than
you? Do you shy away from interacting with those who may have a
different belief?

Jesus interacted with his culture and especially those who thought
differently than He. When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well it
was much like a Christian speaking to a Muslim or a Jew speaking to a
Palestinian. Jesus built a relationship with the woman instead of
taking an adversarial position.

In order to influence our culture it is vital believers engage with
those unlike us. We often assume others who come from other cultures
do not want to engage with us. This is a deception from Satan. Many
who grow up in other faiths do so as a cultural tradition, not because
they have strongly held beliefs. For instance, many Muslims do not
know what is in the Quran and simply believe what they are taught
based on tradition.

Every person is looking for a genuine relationship with God. Jesus
operated based on that assumption. Notice how Jesus engaged with the
woman.

"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever
drinks the water I give him will never thirst. The woman said to him,
"Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep
coming here to draw water." He told her, "Go, call your husband and
come back." "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You
are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had
five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you
have just said is quite true." "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that
you are a prophet (John 4: 13-19).

Once Jesus established a rapport with the woman He began to engage
with her. He spoke supernaturally into her life which broke through
the religious spirit which prevented a theological debate. This led to
faith in Christ and even the city being impacted.

Why not seek out a relationship with someone different from yourself.
You'll be surprised how God might use you.

I can't believe you think that!
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
11-03-2008

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good
life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom" (James
3:13-14).

"I can't believe you think I said that," I complained to my wife. "I
was simply trying to explain that I don't have the same feelings about
that issue as you do." Her response left little empathy for my
position because of the tone in which I responded to her. We resigned
ourselves to agree to disagree.

We all see things through our own set of glasses at times. Men view
things differently than women. Bosses see things differently than
employees. One ethic group will see a situation totally different than
another. Our life experiences, our past treatment of circumstances and
our personalities all contribute to how we view situations in daily
life.

Perception is often each person's reality whether that reality is true
or not. Your perception of a situation is going to dictate your
response more than the actual reality of it.

Whenever conflict arises from viewing things differently there is
really only one way to resolve the difference. Usually the other
person is offended by the tone of the other more than the position
that is taken. If the other person is offended, we can only offer a
few words: "I'm sorry. Will you forgive me for my tone?"

Humbling ourselves is the only way to resolve the relational breach.
This does not mean you must agree with the other person's position, it
simply means you acknowledge their right to their position and you
apologize for the manner in which you responded to their statements.
This will usually allow most conflicts to avoid a breach in the
relationship.

Is there someone you need to seek forgiveness from for taking an
adversarial position?

Do You Need a Breakthrough?
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
11-06-2008

"...while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the
earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the
evening sacrifice. He instructed me and said to me, 'Daniel, I have
now come to give you insight and understanding'" (Dan 9:21-22).

There are times in our lives when we simply need a breakthrough from
God. Maybe you need a new job or a breakthrough in your finances,
direction on a big business deal, or maybe physical healing from an
illness. Sometimes we need to hear from God directly for situations in
our lives.

Daniel was seeking God to understand why the nation had been in
captivity for 70 years. He began to fast and pray. At the end of this
time an angel of the Lord appeared to him. It is clear the angel came
to Daniel because of his fasting and prayer and his seeking God for
answers.

The prophet Jeremiah says, "You will seek me and find me when you seek
me with all your heart" (Jer 29:13). The problem with most of us is we
are unwilling to seek God for the answers. Seeking God requires an
intentional focus that may require prayer and fasting.

Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ said, "I believe
the power of fasting as it relates to prayer is the spiritual atomic
bomb that our Lord has given us to destroy the strongholds of evil and
usher in a great revival and spiritual harvest around the world. The
longer I fasted, the more I sensed the presence of the Lord. The Holy
Spirit refreshed my soul and spirit, and I experienced the joy of the
Lord as seldom before. Biblical truths leaped at me from the pages of
God's Word. My faith soared as I humbled myself and cried out to God
and rejoiced in His presence."*

Do you need a breakthrough? Consider committing to a time of fasting
and prayer.

Dear God, who created mankind in your image, you sure made a colorful
world of people! As I stop and watch and reflect on the people I see,
I notice how everyone is unique. Sometimes I'm frustrated by others'
personalities and actions; other times I am blessed; still other times
I am amused. The fact is, though we were made in your image, you gave
us each a will of our own and instilled different gifts,
personalities, and potential within us. How boring it would be if we
were all just alike! The "spice" of life is made up of all those
different people, with different ideas, and various contributions.
Thank you for caring enough that we are not your puppets, but are
unique individuals, each called to fill special places in your great
plan for our lives. I pray that you will keep my eyes open, my mind
alert, and my will in tune so that I will use all you have given me--
gifts, personality, skills, desires--to the best of my ability, for
the edification of the saints, reaching the lost, and glorifying you.
Please forgive my past failures and empower me today for all you want
to do through me. In Jesus' name, amen.

The Fallacy of Full-Time Christian Work
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
11-11-2008

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name
of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through
him" (Colossians 3:16,17).

Jonathon was a twenty-five year old son of a pastor who was working in
his local Christian bookstore. He started seminary but was unable to
finish because of a lack of finances. He was OK with working in the
store, but felt it was second-best. In fact, sometimes he felt he had
"missed his calling."

Then one day a young woman wondered into the store. She was
distressed. She was not a believer. Her husband had just left her and
she did not know where to turn. She was walking through the mall when
she noticed the store. She decided to walk in, not knowing why.

"Hello, may I help you?" said Jonathon. "Well... I don't know. I saw
your sign and just came in." Right then, she began to cry. She told
Jonathon about her plight, not knowing why she would do such a thing
with a perfect stranger. Jonathon listened and began to talk with her.
Before the conversation was over, Jonathon had prayed with the woman
and led her to faith in Christ.

That night Jonathon pondered what had happened that day. He realized
he had personally led a woman into eternity by being available in his
workplace. He felt a new sense of purpose behind what he thought was
simply a job to put food on the table until he could get to his real
ministry. He confessed to the Lord his wrong view of his work. For the
first time, he realized it was ministry too.

We have incorrectly elevated the roll of the vocational Christian
worker to be more holy and committed than the person who is serving in
other arenas. Yet the call to any workplace is as important as any
other calling. God has to have His people in every sphere of life.
Otherwise, many would never come to know Him because they would be
separated from society.

Wherever you are called, serve the Lord in that place. Let Him
demonstrate His power through your life so that others might
experience Him through you today.

John Belt:"Some Trust in Chariots"
"Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the
name of the LORD our God." Psalm 20:7

It is in God that we put our trust. He is where we find our rest. All
of our hope is in Him and His promises are sure. He will never leave
us or forsake us and will keep us as we abide in His love.

"As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love."
John 15:9

Some Trust in Chariots

While many are putting their trust in man for their deliverance, we
must realize that our only hope is in the Lord our God. He is the One
who dwells in the center, and all things revolve around Him and Him
alone. If we will realize this, absorbing this revelation, we can then
enter into a place where all that comes at us will also revolve around
Him. When we have placed Him at the center of our hearts to reign on
the throne of our lives, all things that we face must bow the knee to
Him.

"...that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in
Heaven, and of those on Earth, and of those under the Earth..."
Philippians 2:10

We function from another realm entirely that transcends the systems
and idolatrous thinking of this world. We will have no other gods
before us. It is a sight to see how many on the planet are looking for
a person, someone or something to worship, but most refuse to
acknowledge the only true God. Many have been caught up in the spirit
of the world, sponging in soulish hope that is no hope at all, but
simply the slight of deception. Many are looking for someone to lead
them because they have lost sight of the Lord.

Just as it was with the children of Israel in the desert, many cry out
"if God does not come on our terms we will find something or someone
to worship and offer everything to him!" (see Exodus 32:8). Of course
God never comes on our terms, but does things His way - so He will
hand those who rebel against Him over to delusion, giving them over to
their sin, iniquity and foolishness (see Romans 1:28). Our hearts must
be solidified in the secret place with the Lord. It is only there that
we will find true trust, commitment and security in the Lord (see
Psalm 91).

Positioned to Praise

With all the transition happening in the earth, those who are
positioned in praise before God will be the ones that glow with the
glory from His throne. Praise is where our victory lies (see Psalm
22:3). We need to know and experience the spiritual realities of the
Kingdom of Heaven in our hearts daily. Praise brings us into such a
place where we can experience the power of His love at all times.

God inhabits the praises of His people. We must be reminded of this
daily in an experiential way, not just in Word. This requires us to
set our hearts and minds in His direction. Our focus needs to be set
upon Him, to glorify Him. As we do we will experience victory in our
spirit.

Another factor to be aware of is the "noise" level in our souls. If we
have a high noise level and have a hard time finding peace, our praise
can be just "more noise." We should be asking the Lord to quiet the
noise of our heart, anxiousness, frustrations, opinions and all the
other stuff that clogs our connection with God.

Once you have pinpointed these things, offer them to the Lord, casting
all of them before Him. We should divest ourselves of all concern,
asking for His grace to do so. Then begin to lift our voices in
praise, clapping our hands and dancing. There is a freedom in being
able to worship in this way.

"The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of
righteousness, quietness and assurance forever" Isaiah 32:17. When
this is combined with a "noiseless" soul, there can be deeper
experiences with the Lord where the glory of His Presence is like a
thick saturation through our beings.

In all these changes going on we need to remind ourselves that nothing
is too difficult for the Lord. It is His glory to come in the
difficult times and bring breakthrough and blessing, which makes our
faith in Him that much stronger. This is really where the rubber meets
the road and our faith is tested true as gold. In this place His glory
shines the brightest.

"His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of His praise.
His brightness was like the light; He had rays flashing from His hand,
and there His power was hidden."Habakkuk 3:3-4

Brightness is the place He desires to bring His people. He wants our
faces to be radiant with His Presence, peace and love. Our connection
with Him is solidified as we draw near to Him with pure hearts knowing
that only He has the solutions of our days. What is impossible for man
is possible with God. This is His delight, to show Himself strong on
behalf of His people.

Working All Things Together

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love
God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Romans
8:28

We also must remind ourselves that God has a "no-fail" plan. We have
the best plan imaginable because no matter what - all things work
together for the good to them that love God and are the called
according to His purposes. As long as we align ourselves with His
heart and desires we cannot go wrong.

"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you
desire, and it shall be done for you." John 15:6-8

He is always there as our Father to see that the best comes out of
every circumstance and situation. God is always reminding us of
promises like these so that we can always stay in a place of faith and
expectancy in what He will do. He is continually drawing us saying,
"My child, come to Me and I will be your reward and meet your every
need." He is not a father who would leave us. He will never leave us
nor forsake us but will be with us in all places wherever we go.

Finding His Rest

"Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Matthew 11:29

Answers will many times evade us and this is why He entreats us not to
seek the answers, but to seek Him. When we find Him we find rest for
our souls. As we give Him the firstfruits of our time, He will reward
us with the rest that can come no other way. If peace has been lost it
is only because we have lost Him. He never leaves us.

He is always right there. To find the rest that He gives the
connection must be restored. When this is restored there is a
continual flow of His Spirit to water the earth of our hearts. His
waters tenderize us and cause us to let all concerns fall away.

"Thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'Concerning the words which you
have heard - because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself
before God when you heard His words against this place and against its
inhabitants, and you humbled yourself before Me, and you tore your
clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard you,' says the LORD." 2
Chronicles 34:26-27

This life is a vapor and worry will only steal the goodness of God
that is available to us as His family. His rest is our inheritance and
leads us to a place of faith. It is His rest that awaits us in His
living room. He is always ready and willing to minister His life to
us.
