Thehomework problems in the WileyPlus system are due weekly on Monday at 10:00PM. All homework must be completed by 10:00PM on the due date. No exceptions allowed. Since the WileyPlus server might have problems occasionally, be sure to start the assignments early and turn in answers steadily, rather than all on the last day. Answers can be entered individually.

The due dates for specific chapters are indicated on the schedule page, and the problems are listed below. Most answers are numerical, and need to be within a certain tolerance (currently set to 2%) of the correct answer. You get instant feedback as to whether the answer is correct or not. You usually have up to 5 attempts to get the correct answer.

After the homework is assignment is due, the homework solutions will be placed on the E-Learning web site for this course. This will give you plenty of time to study the solutions prior to your quiz on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

Advice: Homework is a rewarding activity for those who work at it. We encourage students to talk to one another about the problems, but you must enter the answers yourself. It is extremely important to work out how an answer was obtained, because that is the key for doing well on the quizzes and exams.

The end of chapter questions and problems, including the ones in WileyPlus, are extremely useful for testing your comprehension of the material. In other words, you will not understand physics if you can't solve these types of problems. Our experience is that a strategy of keeping up-to-date with the reading and working these problems, even when some require extra effort, is extremely effective for preparing for the examinations. Conversely, a pattern of falling behind followed by last-minute cramming is ineffective and leads to needless stress.

Should you have troubles in solving any of the problems, you should not hesitate in seeking help from your friends, your TA, or your instructors. The Teaching Center provides excellent physics tutoring services, as do the students of Tau Beta Pi.

The General Information section includes Homework Assignments, Adaptive Practice Assignments, Reading Quizzes, Tools & Resources. These provide a general guide for the New WileyPlus interface including an overview of the interface, tools/resources embedded in Canvas, and quizzes/tests/assignments settings.

With New WileyPLUS, all assignments are directly embedded in the course. For most courses, you'll find your WileyPLUS assignments in the modules. Read step-by-step instructors for all three assignment types below.

When answering questions, you may want to save it for later. Once you've chosen an answer, select Save for Later. Questions saved for review will be marked with a symbol and auto-submitted on the due date.

Select Submit Answer when you are ready to have your answer scored. You will get immediate feedback and (if the question policies allow), you'll be able to select a different answer choice to resubmit.

Adaptive Practice assignments are part of an adaptive learning system. It starts with a quick diagnostic for any chapter to determine your baseline proficiency on each topic in that chapter. Your individual diagnostic report can help you decide what to do next in studying or practice.

Reading Quizzes are designed to be taken after you have completed the required reading for the module. It is also suggested that you take a readng quiz before completing any WileyPLUS homework assignments.

Required Text: Finite Mathematics: An Applied Approach, TenthEdition, by Michael Sullivan.

We will cover chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9, beginning with a discussion of elementary combinatorics, the theory of counting, spending the bulk of the course on probability and some of its applications, and concluding with an introduction to statistics.

WileyPlus: This course uses WileyPlus, an integrated course management system designed by the textbook publisher. A registration code for WileyPlus is required, and it will be impossible to complete homework assignments without one. Such a registration code comes with the textbook at no additional cost if it is purchased at the bookstore, whether the hardcover edition (available at the RU bookstore in downtown new Brunswick) or the binder edition (available at the Livingston bookstore). Another possibility is to buy online only access (available at www.wileyplus.com); this gives access to the textbook online as well as to all features of WileyPlus. Lecture time and location:Tillett207, TTh 3:20-4:40.Final Exam: Monday December 22, 12-3pm.Grading Scheme:

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp 15% Homework

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp 10% Quizzes

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp 20% First Midterm

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp 20% Second Midterm

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp 35% Final Exam

Every week (approximately) you will have a set of homework problems to complete online, through WileyPlus, as well as an in class quiz. The advantage of WileyPlus is that it offers instant feedback on whether your answer to each question is correct, as well as hints for how to approach each problem. If you have completed and understood the homework, you should not find the corresponding quiz terribly difficult. The lowest two quiz scores will be dropped, and there will be no makeup quizzes.A few friendly words of advice: Never fall behind in a math course!!!!!The ideas we'll be discussing need time to sink in, and are very difficultto learn quickly right before an exam, so it is important to clear upyour confusions sooner rather than later. An excellent way toimprove your understanding of the subject is to study and work onhomework together with classmates. Explaining mathematical ideas toothers is often the most effective way to sort out your own confusions andclarify your understanding; you don't know just what it is that you don'tknow until you try explaining it to someone else.

You are also warmly invited to ask questions in class, which students are far too hesitant to do in math courses, or in office hours! Some extra practice problems:
