HPGo to support.hp.com. Enter your laptop's model number. On that device's page, click on "Manuals", then choose the "Maintenance and Service Guide". HP manuals are usually very detailed, and will probably have all the information you need.

Dell: Go to support.dell.com. Choose whether you are a home or small business user, then click "drivers and downloads". If you know your laptop's service tag, enter that, as you will be guaranteed to get the right results. Otherwise, choose your model number from the list. On the left navigation bar, find "Manuals" and click on it. The exact steps vary by laptop, but find your way to your language version of the service manual, then choose "view". Dell service manuals tend to be very detailed.

Asus: Go to the Asus downloads page and select your computer model. Click the + by "Manuals" and find the version for your language. Download and unzip it. These manuals are pretty minimal, but usually at least have enough info for you to figure out how to replace basic components like RAM and the hard drive.

iFixIt.com has repair manuals for PCs, Macs, and many other devices. The instructions are well illustrated with photographs and usually quite clear. It's a community edited site so you can contribute your own instructions or improve articles that are there.

An essential part of the Stockton learning experience includes student access to reliable technology. It is important for students to have uninterrupted access to a laptop that meets minimum hardware specifications. This ensures that assigned coursework can be completed efficiently and effectively. Before buying a laptop, we recommend students contact their department of study or academic advisor to determine whether there are specific hardware requirements that must be met to perform the work required by their particular program.

We recommend avoiding devices like Chromebooks or tablet computers; they may not be able to run the software required by your academic program. Our suggestion is to consider major manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Apple, as they provide excellent reliability and service. Students should first consult with their academic department and consider what computer best suits their needs and preferences. Please note that students are ultimately responsible for ensuring their chosen computer meets or exceeds any requirements specific to their program.

Hardware - Personal Purchases

For personal purchases, the hardware vendors below offer academic discounts. Proof of enrollment in higher education varies with each vendor. Visit the links below for full details.

Special Note: Stockton is a predominantly Windows campus. Before purchase, please consult with your academic program to determine the most compatible system type.

Enjoy the comfort and convenience of desktop typing on your desktop computer, laptop, smartphone, and tablet. The Logitech Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard K380 is a compact and distinctive keyboard that lets you communicate and create on your personal devices, anywhere in the home.

If you typically use function keys more often than shortcut keys, install Logitech software and useit to set up shortcut keys as function keys and use the keys to perform functions without having to hold down the fn key.

Unique multi-function keys makes the Logitech Keyboard K380 compatible with most computers and mobile devices. Key label colors and split lines identify functions or symbols reserved for different devices and operating systems.

Modifier keys on either side of the space bar display two sets of labels separated by split lines. The label above the split line shows the modifier sent to a Windows, Android, or Chrome device. The label below the split line shows the modifier sent to an Apple Macintosh, iPhone, or iPad. The keyboard automatically uses modifiers associated with the currently selected device.

*The Alt Gr (or Alt Graph) key that appears on many international keyboards replaces the right Alt key normally found to the right of the spacebar. When pressed in combination with other keys, Alt Gr enables entry of special characters.

If your work involves sitting at a desk, discomfort doesn't have to be part of the job. You may be able to avoid some of the health problems associated with seated work, such as neck and back pain and sore wrists and shoulders, by using proper office ergonomics. Chair height, equipment spacing and desk posture all make a difference.

Choose a chair that supports your spine. Adjust the height of the chair so that your feet rest flat on the floor. Or use a footrest so your thighs are parallel to the floor. If the chair has armrests, position them so your arms sit gently on the armrests with your elbows close to your body and your shoulders relaxed.

Under the desk, make sure there's enough room for your legs and feet. Don't store items under your desk, as that can shrink the amount of available space and make it hard to sit correctly. If the desk is too low and the desk height can't be changed, put sturdy boards or blocks under the desk legs to raise it. If the desk is too high and can't be changed, raise your chair. Use a footrest to support your feet if necessary. If you don't have a footrest, try using a small stool or a stack of sturdy books. If your desk has a hard edge that's not rounded, pad the edge or use a wrist rest. This protects your wrists from a problem called contact stress that can happen as a result of extended contact with a hard edge.

Put your computer keyboard in front of you so your wrists and forearms are in line and your shoulders are relaxed. If you use a mouse or another type of pointer connected to a computer, place it within easy reach, on the same surface as your keyboard. While you are typing, using a computer touchpad, or using a mouse or pointer, keep your wrists straight, your upper arms close to your body, and your hands at or slightly below the level of your elbows. If possible, set the sensitivity of the mouse or pointer so you can use a light touch on it.

Place the computer monitor straight in front of you, directly behind your keyboard, about an arm's length away from your face. The monitor should be no closer to you than 20 inches (about 50 centimeters) and no further away than 40 inches (about 100 centimeters). The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level. If you wear bifocals, lower the monitor an additional 1 to 2 inches (about 2 to 5 centimeters) for more comfortable viewing.

Using a laptop computer may lead to discomfort because of the low screen height and cramped keyboard and touchpad. If you use a laptop at your desk, consider getting an external keyboard and mouse, along with a laptop stand, to more closely mimic a desktop computer setup.

Remember, no matter how well your workspace is set up for proper ergonomics, sitting in the same position for hours at a time isn't good for your body. Get up and walk around as often as you can throughout the workday. If possible, do some work standing up. While you're seated, stretch your hands, fingers and arms from time to time. Shifting your position, standing up and moving will ease strain on your body and help you stay healthier.

Many Computer Science majors and minors want a laptop computer that will be useful for courses, research, and side projects in the program. Our faculty in Computer Science have some suggestions if you are looking to buy something that will work for you!

A laptop is a serious investment for any computer science student. A good laptop for computer science applications (including GPU for gaming) should cost $800-$1,000. You may not need to spend that much if you have no plan for gaming, high-performance computing (HPC), or artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

That being said, do not cut corners, and consider that for a little more investment (such as $1,500 instead of the lower end), you could have a laptop that lasts 4 years of school instead of 2 or 3 years.

The first year of assignments does not require a beefed-up computer. The later courses add some assignments that will challenge conventional hardware. If cost is an issue, there is no need to rush out and buy a high-end laptop. Perhaps take a while to research the purchase if you already have a laptop for your first year. In addition, there are lab computers and online coding platforms to complete assignments if you do not have your own.

Research the battery life of any laptop. A good rule of thumb is that the more you spend, the better the battery will be in your laptop. PCs vary in battery life, and MacBooks tend to have longer battery life.
