Psych Club Minutes for Sept 12th 2007

In Attendence: Lorraine, Sarah, Laura, Sunny, and Brandy
Welcome back for another year everyone, it was good to see a few new faces at the meeting today, hoping to see more join us in the future!

One of the biggest things brought up at todays meeting was directions we'd like to take the Psych Club this year.
We are really hoping to bring students together, to help each other out. And whilst we understand that pressure comes from the role of tutoring we would like to encourage people to form study groups, and hope that they can use Psych Club as a way to meet people who are looking for others to wok with.
To try and get people talking we have created a Facebook group for TRU Psych Club members. It can be found by searching TRU Student Psychology Club, in a Facebook group search. This not only is a place ot meet people for study groups but to talk about courses, share with other students who are looking to take different courses and unite psych students in general.

TALKING TO CLASSES!
We would also like to try and expand the membership of the Psychology club. Current members will therefore be going out to 2nd and 3rd year courses letting other students know about the club. Features we would like these students to highlight include:

Getting to know fellow psychology students
          Which Leads to
Finding out more about psych courses (inside info on what students think of profs and courses and such)
Having people to have a chance to do study groups with
Having older students to get advice from on upper level stuff (Honours)
More resources about Grad School info, The Honours Program, GREs...etc
A way to meet the profs
Chances to hold positions that can be put on later resumes
Career Nights
Socials
A way to have fun a unite with other students with similar interests

The Contact info that should be given to these classes includes the new Facebook Group, as well as our email address
Also tell them that our next meetings will be held on Tuesday Sept 25th at 12:30 and Wednesday Sept 26th at 11:30 and will be in Meeting Room TBA (I"ll let everyone know by Monday)

Classes I would like people to talk to our as follows:
Psych 210: Tuesday @ 8:30am
Psych 211: Monday or Wednesday @ 8:30am
Psych 213: Monday 1:30 AND Tuesday or Thursday @ 10:30
Psych 216: Monday @ 2:30
Psych 222: Thursday @ 2:30 AND Wednesday @ 3:30
Psych 300: Monday @ 6:30
Psych 319: Tuesday @ 10:30
Psych 351: Wednesday @ 12:30 or Friday @ 1:30

If people could please let me know which classes they will talk to to it would be very appreciated, especially if you can talk to a class that you're currently enrolled in.
If you're not enrolled in the class, please just check with the prof ahead of time to make sure it's ok to make a quick announcement at the beginning of their class!
Thanks!

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES
We were also thinking that this year Psych Club should make sure to look for volunteering opportunities for its members. Whether they be done as a club, or if someone finds something that only requires a few people to help out with, and lets us all know. Volunteering is important for putting on your after grad resume whether heading to Grad School or into the Career World. And being part of the club means that they are many of us looking and finding different opportunites than what one person may find on their own.

CAREER NIGHT
As well our Career Night has been one of our most popular activities and we therefore would like to continue this year. We were thinking that we would do it sooner in the second semester before we all get bogged down with too much homework, sometime around mid-late Febuary. And we must make sure to give the presenters lots of contact so we will start planning very early in the second semester. (Amy will be contacted for information she has already gathered on people to contact, Thanks Amy!)

PSI-CHI
Another thing for the Psych Club to look into is the Psi-Chi. This is an international Psych Club, and while it does come with some fees (which the fauculty and our clubs funds may be able to help with) it is an important opportunity for anyone wanting to pursue a Psychology related career, or further schooling. One of the biggest features being the Undergrad journal that Psi-Chi runs, giving our Honours and Directed Studies students a great chance at being published. It also comes with Scholarship and Grant opportunites as well as special booths, lectures and meetings at any APA or Western Psych Conferences. (And can look good on Resumes)

CONFERENCES
Speaking of conferences, the conference the Psych Department plans on attending this year is the APA Conference in Chicago. Unfortunately due to the distance of this conference a smaller group will be taken, it shall include honours students, and those who are seriously considering going into the Honours program. So if you are thinking about Honours, and do want to attend the lecture, definitely start to speak up and start planning now. (We will be busy looking into different forms of funding). Conferences are a great experience, and there is so much information to be found at them. There are many lectures in many fields (definitely interesting) and so many ideas presented by students. (And it was noted that if you are planning on attending make sure your passport is valid as well!)

NEW TREASURER
In other news Sarah Moser has now been voted in as our new Treasurer. Thank-you Sarah:)
And to keep her busy a meeting must be made between Alexa Klassen, Krystal Clark (Congrats to both of you ladies on your new name changes;)) our former President and Treasurer, respectively, with Sarah and Lorraine to switch the Clubs bank account over. As well Alexa is still owed 25$ by the club, for the lottery application last year, so that must be sorted out.

SOCIAL!
And finally the fun part!!! A SOCIAL!!!
SOCIAL!!! (Highlighted in case you're just skimming thru by now) In hopes of having the profs attend so that new members get a chance to meet them, and us old ones all get a chance to bug them, it will be held on a Friday afternoon.
Therefore FRIDAY SEPT 28th at 3 (maybe 3:30, due to Honours meeting (will confirm next week)) AT HEREOS!!!
And chance for all us psych students and profs to get together in a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy ourselves!!!...I meant learn about Psychology, of course.
PS. Unfortunately the faculty will not be covering the tab on this one, it will be Buy Your Own Booze (and Snacks)

So I do believe that's all, sorry about the essay there! Hope you're all still awake! Think of it as a good excuse to put off whatever homework you know you should be doing!

Lorraine:)
