Hi Everyone, I hope the summer treated you all well and that the new
school year is going alright. I've set up and settled in a bit now at the
U of R and things are starting to get pretty interesting - although I was
pretty sad and lonely for everyone in Kamloops at first. I lucked out and
got a $10,000 raise to my scholarship bringing me up to $20,000 paid out
in monthly installments over the next 12 months, so money is no longer
much of a worry (whew). My classes (Research Methods, Multivariate
Statistics, and Advanced Psychopathology this semester, plus grad/clinical
seminars) seem really interesting and although they're a lot of work they
aren't difficult (yet.... :P) so rest assured that we are prepared well at
TRU for the classes (at least, if not the ease of getting into grad
school). I've started helping out around the lab, mostly proofreading and
research for a big grant proposal but also helped check the online
questionnaires that we just launched, and will hopefully get to start
participating in research in the next week or two here.

I got to sit in on a labmates Masters thesis defence and although it was a
little bit more intense it was pretty much exactly like the honours
defense back at TRU (they had a small public showing, only about a half
dozen or so students, and a prof from UBC on speaker phone and a prof from
St. Francis Xavier on video link in addition to the internal profs in the
room) so it doesn't all that scarry :P

And if anyone is interested in some of the research were doing we just
launched some online questionnaires (thats how they collect
questionnaire/survey data around here, theres no going into classes at all
:D) and anyone who is interested can feel free to participate (warning it
takes about 45 min to finish) and you can access it here
http://dev.www.uregina.ca/anxiety/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=9&Itemid=21
- they might even give me some of the data to play with too :P

Well I hope everyone is doing good, I miss you all terribly, good luck
with everything and don't feel free to ask questions

Congrats to Pat!!!
enjoy the year Pat

I too found grad school ( when I was at UBC in Law) not really that hard!
the only thing I think I really hated and why I did not stay was just being away from home: my family- and missing the nice friendly atmosphere we had at TRU with students and friends we knew.
It's funny- you think it is going to be some big deal but really the hardest part of the whole thing is getting in, all the paperwork  and doing all the GRE's LSAT's etc...
We have great staff at TRU in the Psyc. department and they can really support you & help you out alot!
Just keep trying ... for those of you who are trying to apply for grad school - because really "you are smart enough!" really!

Pat, I am taking another class with Reid- Theories of Personality ( with a few of our old classmates who still haven't quite finished the degree- I only have 2 more classes)
The class is basically a review and Reid is as nice of a guy and fun as ever.

I decided to work for a year - to see if I really wanted to apply the stuff I wanted to study in grad school first. when I went into Law I hadn't really assured myself I actually wanted to work in that field and was glad I found out early or it would have been a big waste of 3 years and lots of $$$
I am working now at 'Child & Youth mental health' in a position that is mat leave so it is great - only 1 year. I am doing Clinicians work- really! Assements- treatment plans- etc.. kids with: anxiety, OCD, ADHD, phobias, and some EPI early psychosis- it is really interesting and I am learning alot fast. Yes they let me do assessments! because they are so short of staff- and I do some CBT cognitive behavioural training as well- it is great to work for the government and get things paid for as well- kind of like getting paid to do a practicum for a year!
So yeh- there are good jobs out there too! Just keep your eyes open. Again, my advice do some work in the field to make sure you want to work in Psychology.

Your grad studies sound really interesting- research will be neat- let us know what you are working on
and I will take a peek at your survey-
All the BEst to you!
We miss you- I enjoyed our times at TRU- crazy stress over Psyc 319 exams and trips to the pub.
Take Care and Enjoy your studies!!!

TRU( yes- still finishing! Psychology )
