Fonts are licensed and the university has a limited number of licenses for the font packages below. Licenses are reserved for employees whose position descriptions delegate them as primary communication employees who produce design work. Individuals with the license should not share the files or use for personal use. For more information or to purchase a license, contact uob...@uoregon.edu.
Our web typography includes three key typefaces: United Sans Regular, United Serif Regular for headlines, and Source Sans Variable for body text. If you are unable to license United, use Source Sans as a replacement font.
Use United Sans Regular and United Serif Regular for headings, subheads, and header and footer text. Use Source Sans for body copy and instances in which United is unavailable. Source Sans and Source Serif are alternative fonts in digital and print when United is unavailable.
There will be instances where the JHU brand fonts cannot be utilized because of technical limitations or restrictions. An example of this limitation is an HTML email in which attempts to include the brand fonts will likely fail. In these situations, Tahoma and Georgia should be used.
Gentona, a sans serif font with a close typographic relationship to Quadon, is a body copy font that may also be used in headlines and subheads when Quadon is too casual for the communication or audience.
Titling Gothic is our impact font. It is best suited for headlines and should be used only in all caps and in short lines and phrases (between 10 and 15 words). Very limited use is recommended for maximum impact. As Titling Gothic and Quadon both act as impact typefaces, Quadon must always be used in a secondary role when Titling Gothic takes the lead to maintain the typographic representation of the brand.
Establishing font pairings will help create greater visual consistency across all university communications. Viewers will begin to connect each typeface with a specific meaning. Quadon is very likely to be delivering brand messaging, while Gentona or Arnhem could be delivering more utility-focused information.
Combining all four fonts in one document can come across as busy or messy if used incorrectly, so we recommend limiting font usage to two or three at once. Our default recommended font pairing is Quadon for headlines and Gentona for body copy.
For websites, HTML emails, and online applications Johns Hopkins University uses an alternate collection of fonts provided by Adobe Fonts. This collection has been chosen to resemble our original brand fonts as closely as possible in character and utility to maintain a consistent look and feel of Johns Hopkins University across all mediums. The approved fonts for use on the web are as follows:
Users with an active Adobe Creative Cloud account may generate their own font packages directly from fonts.adobe.com using the approved list of fonts and weights above. For simplicity and ease of use we have also provided pre-packaged collections for use to any Johns Hopkins University entity.
Univers (regular, not condensed) is the university-wide institutional sans serif font. It should be used as the primary font for all university-wide marketing and communications when available. It may be used in a broad range of applications, including word processing and as body copy in printed materials. One exception to this is on the website, where Acumin should be used.
Calibri should be used for correspondence where Univers is not available. It is an acceptable replacement primarily used for email communications, and in composing and addressing letters and envelopes.
Acumin should always be used as the font for NAU web pages. While Acumin has a variety of weights, we are limiting usage to the three listed below. Using different weights helps create separation between headlines and body copy while making the hierarchy of information clear for the reader.
The entire Futura font family is used for FCB sub-branding (includes Futura Light, Book, Medium, Heavy, Bold, Extra Bold. Also includes Light Condensed, Medium Condensed, Bold Condensed, and Extra Bold Condensed).
UC San Diego is passionate about telling our story and connecting with the world through our messaging. Typography plays an extremely important role in ensuring that our content is dynamic, recognizable and legible. Following is an overview of our primary brand fonts as well as recommendations for alternate fonts for flexibility across mediums. Together, these fonts create a vibrant and bold brand while having an easy-to-use system for university use.
The primary font for all university materials, Brix is a modern sans-serif that prides itself on legibility. Available in a wide range of weights, Brix can provide contrast and emphasis to establish clear hierarchy in text. Brix should be your go-to font for anything UC San Diego.
If you do not have access to Brix Sans, Source Sans is our recommended alternate. Source Sans is a clean sans-serif with a wide range of weights similar to Brix. Brix and Source Sans should never be used at the same time on materials. Source Sans can be downloaded from Google Fonts or accessed through the Canva platform. If you cannot download Source Sans, Myriad Pro or Calibri (both available through commonly used software) may be used as a last resort; however, these are not recommended for use on external-facing materials.
Most fonts are licensed on an individual user basis or for a specific medium (for example web). Licenses can vary based on the application you are purchasing for, so we recommend reading and understanding a font license prior to purchasing.
Ensuring that any content is legible and readable is essential for communication to all audiences. While certain aspects of type setting can vary based on scale and application, there are some basics that should always be considered:
Our new typographical pairing is current and versatile. To create a consistent look for a wide variety of communications, two typefaces for print (Proxima Nova and FreightBig Pro) and one for web (Montserrat) are included. Whether you work with prospective or current students, undergraduates or graduates, staff or faculty, donors or alumni, consider which of our fonts is appropriate for your target audience.
Suitable for both print and digital, Proxima Nova combines modern proportions with a geometric appearance. Selected based on legibility and functionality, it includes a range of weights. Bold and expressive, Proxima Nova is best suited for use in communications directed to students, interdepartmental communication, and general institutional correspondence.
If you do not have access to Adobe fonts (Proxima Nova, FreightBig Pro, and Montserrat), for the vast majority of university communications, the following universal fonts are recommended for official use. User-friendly and easily accessible, they are available as part of the Microsoft Office software suite on most WSU computers.
