The last discovery was the one that made them stop for a much closer look.  There, on the side of the game trail, was the prone body of a man—or whatever was left of him.  After ascertaining that no one was near and that this wasn’t an ambush, the group came closer to the man.  He was emaciated but still clinging to life and in desperate need of water.  The man was quickly identified as a human in his early twenties with the remains of his clothes and trappings marking him from Morgrave U.

As Bryn neared the man to give him some water, she suddenly stopped unsure as to what to do.  A thorny stem was attached to the back of the man’s neck.  But the most disturbing sight was the small, blood red orchid that was alive and well—apparently thriving and feeding on the human.

Ember stepped forward, its large feet sinking into the soft moist earth.  Bending down to take a closer look at the human, Ember examined his body and the parasitic plant.  “Perhaps, Commander, I should remove flower.  Seems to like human flesh, maybe thorns inject poison that causes sleep.  Warforged don’t sleep.  Also,” the warforged paused, tapping on its plating, “harder than flesh.  May be best suited to deal with plant.”

[Belkar-New]
"Yes, Ember," Belkar said, "I agree. However, lets hold off. We don't know what the flower is doing to him or if removing it would kill him."

Shrugging off his water carrier, Belkar uncorked two of the bottles. After a long draught, he passed the clay jug to Leif, the off white bones of his right hand standing out against the tan-red clay of the water jug.

Still wearing his glove, Belkar eased the head of the man off the ground, trying to keep the flower as far away as possible from his own face. Being careful not to drown the man, Belkar raised the water bottle so that a trickle of water escaped, enough to wet the man's mouth and run down his throat. Gesturing the others closer, he turned the man's head so that the thorny stem was in view.

"What do you think, can it be removed," Belkar asked.

Hey, life is just one big cycle. Sometimes you're up and sometimes you're down. It's up to
you to make the best of wherever you are. :)

[ooc – anyone that posts before Angie is an overachiever.]

[Belkar / old]

"What do you think, can it be removed," Belkar asked.

[Leif / new]

Leif examined the man carefully. He wasn’t gettting a psionic feeling from the flower [right Fabian?]. This seemed to be something… biological. “I’m not exactly sure what is going on here but I don’t think we can remove it without risking the man’s death.” Leif considered carefully before continuing, “If he was healthier… maybe. But even then… we could be talking about irreperable damage. Unfortunately, this man’s fate is already sealed. If we do nothing, this thing will kill him. If we pull it off it could kill him. My suggestion is to do whatever it takes to revive the man with the flower attached. It would be safer to remove it when he is a little more fit. But if this flower is making him aggressive…” Leif laughed bitterly. “It’s a damed if you do, damned if you don’t situation. We could just yank the thing off, have Lan or Bryn heal him either during or directly after, and hope for the best. Our only chance to learn something from the man is to revive him, with or without the flower. We have enough muscle here to keep this one man in check. Wake him up and try to question him. If we don’t get the answers we want, we remove the flower. Unless anyone else has a better suggestion?”

No matter what they did, this man was going to die. Leif was sure of that. It was a pity. Whatever that flower was doing to the man, it was killing him. Leif didn’t want him to die but even if they got the flower off… the damage might be irrepairable. As the others discussed the options among themselves, Leif had one more idea, “You know, if we could get the flower to release him voluntarily… perhaps apply a little heat close by? It may just wake the man up trying to escape… but if we held him down…” Leif frowned, “No, if we destroy the flower it could kill him. I stick with my original suggestion, wake him up first. Any other course of action and we risk losing him without learning anything.”
