NRPG: Lovely. The best fighters get hit first ;^)

REF: Belkar quietly sat down and turned his head towards where the
noise was coming from; his eyes lost as if in thought. As if following
an unspoken order, the construct also sat down; its arms slumped at its
sides... and listened.

RPG: "Oh, bugger," Flask whispered as he heard the thing -
whatever it really was - getting closer. And those two tin-heads had
decided it was a good time to rest their feet!

"Up an' about, ye lazy bugger!" Flask shouted into Ember's ear,
planting his feet in a wide stance, putting his hands on the
construct's shoulders and tried his very best to shake him out of it
- whatever it was that ailed the construct and the commander. Were it
not for the presence of a threat it might have been a funny sight, the
thin, light-weight scout trying to muscle the massive and solid
construct around. The man's eyes were wide with panic, his bedraggled
beard twitching as if independently alive. At first the construct
refused to budge but then Flask managed to find enough leverage to get
Ember moving...

... and had to jump back with a yelp as the warforged fell down on his
back, almost crushing Flask's foot in the progress.

"Git ye up!" he raged, drawing back a boot to try to apply
sufficient force to wake Ember in a different manner; by kicking him in
the face. Gently.

TAG: Everyone interested.

NRPG: Shaking Ember out of it as per rules, hoping someone else does it
for Belkar. Hopefully this really *is* a fascination effect and not
just something similar to it.

[Lan]
The kalashtar turned his head as though listening to something. Yes, there it was- the clear sign of a psionic manifestation. He stepped forward to stop Daram as the student walked away then seemed to think better of it. Belkar, their leader, had clearly been entranced by the mental attack.

"Someone stop Daram." He hissed the order as though someone might be listening. The healer himself stopped at Belkar's right shoulder and reached down to roughly jog the human back to wakefulness. His eyes scanned the surrounding jungle and his grip on the morningstar visibly tightened; he began to swing the spiked head on the end of its chain in a slow arc.

Time slowed as he concentrated on his breathing. Each breath expanded his senses until it seemed that he could follow every mosquito's path through the air, could count the breaths of each member of his party. Everything was so easy to follow in this state that he knew where Bryn's next step would be, where Flask's eyes would dart next. It was all.. so... clear.

He stood on a plain of black clouds as the beautiful, golden warrior moved toward him. The champion's skin gleamed with an inner light, his eyes shone with understanding and love. Each step was a predestined stride through the thick air, every movement as if he were reliving a dream, a vision.

Lan's arm lashed out and the head of his mace whistled through the air, finding the place that beautiful being would be in one heartbeat from now to crush the light out of those terrible eyes, to mar the excruciatingly beauty of that face.

He looked up just in time to see the lance of blinding white light burn across the battlefield that burned out his eyes.

Lan shook his head to clear the inappropriate memories from his head; he needed to focus on the here and now. Ancient quori battles could come later. For now he needed to fight the enemy who was here.

OOC: Interrupting Belkar's entrancement and activating Precognition: Offensive. Given another turn Lan will try to re-equip his chain shirt.

[ooc - just to give you guys plenty of warning, I'll be incommunicado from the 23rd to about the 28th. If you don't hear from me after that, then I've been eaten by a bear.]

[Lan old]

"Someone stop Daram." He hissed the order as though someone might be listening. The healer himself stopped at Belkar's right shoulder and reached down to roughly jog the human back to wakefulness. His eyes scanned the surrounding jungle and his grip on the morningstar visibly tightened; he began to swing the spiked head on the end of its chain in a slow arc.

[Bryn new]

The druid had no idea what was going on; Belkar and Ember seemed to suddenly succumb to fatigue at the worst possible time. It wasn't until Flask and Lan began shaking them that she realized that they might have been "interfered" with. But had it been whatever was tracking them, or were there more than one enemy in the jungle? She remembered Ember attacking the sailor, and hoped that there wasn't another evil changeling out in the jungle.

Daram stumbled past her just as she heard Lan's warning. She grabbed at the student's hand, but even passive as he was, he was too strong for her. He pulled his hand free and kept walking back down the path. Directly towards her animals. "Mey-shan!" The clawfoot and the coyote looked up, instantly alert. "Pektan Daram," she pointed to the student walking their way, "pektan!"

The two animals fell immediately into guard position, putting themselves between Daram and their backtrail. Swift lowered herself and barked warningly, as a sheepdog might do to an unruly sheep. The clawfoot hissed and moved towards the student, prepared to knock him back if necessary. Daram, on some level aware that his path had been blocked, attempted to go around the animals, but they moved with him. If Daram had been about to sacrifice himself to their stalker, she had bought him at least a few moments. The only problem was that her friends were now directly in line with the awful hissing sound, which was still approaching.

We need help. Bryn focused on her connection with Earth Mother, stronger here than most places she'd been. As she spoke the few words necessary to communicate her need to Eberron, Bryn quickly ran through the catalogue of all the animals she'd ever seen or heard of. Fearing that they were being pursued by a snake, she was tempted to call up on a mongoose, but she suspected that it would be too small. Still, something quick and fierce, with teeth and claws...Bryn glanced at Leif smiled slightly. She made her choice.

The air behind her animals began to shimmer, as if with the heat. A form quickly solidified in the intervening space. A broad, powerful form, with tawny fur and a golden mane. As the lion materialized fully in this plane of existence, he shook his mane and roared.

The air behind her animals began to shimmer, as if with the heat. A form quickly solidified in the intervening space. A broad, powerful form, with tawny fur and a golden mane. As the lion materialized fully in this plane of existence, he shook his mane and roared.

[Leif / new]

Leif felt the psionic power wash over him, his defenses easily batting it aside. First the bats, now this? Far too much psionics for Leif’s liking. He had often though of studying the localization of psionic effects but had always talked himself out of it. First, he had almost never come in contact with other psionists so didn’t really feel the need. And second, how would he know he had learned the ability? Without a source to test it on…

Leif cursed to himself. He reached down and Leiflet fell off into his hand. Her legs quickly materialized, this time with a faint green tinge. If one looked closely, they almost looked like the ghost of a vine. Leif smiled. He had often hypothesized that her legs drew there substance from the inherent psionic reservoir of the surrounding area. This confirmed this belief. Leiflet dropped down to the spongy trampled undergrowth. Leif touched her briefly and she scampered off between the legs of the student, climbing nearly silently through the dense forest.  [ooc – Leif put Inertial Armor on her +4 AC, 1pp – she’ll scout ahead and report back. She’ll try to stay out of harm’s way and find out the number of type of creatures (I suspect only one but who knows?)].

[tag – dm]

Leif glanced over at Bryn who had a mischievous grin on her face. Confused at first, Leif’s eyes grew wide as he saw the animal that he had only seen in three places in his entire life: painted on his hand by the Halfling tribe, on the wall of the cave that Bryn had led them to, and in the mirror every time he shifted. The creature growled its displeasure at its unfamiliar surroundings and Leif wanted to whoop in joy. What a sound! The animal part of the shifter wanted to transform and run with this majestic creature. But he couldn’t, not now. But someday, if their lives ever settled down, he’d ask Bryn to summon this creature for him again. Someday…

Leif closed his eyes, shutting out all the distractions. He settled his mind and zeroed in on what must be done. He surrounded himself with a protective barrier and stepped forward. “Leiflet will report back what we are up against. I don’t think we’ll be surprised by what she finds but you can’t be too careful.” Leif stepped to the front of the group. What he had in mind he had never tried before and he didn’t know what exact form it would take. He wanted to make sure that the rest of the group was behind him.

Standing next to Ember, Leif patted him on the shoulder, “You and I have to do some exercises my friend. Your mind seems far too vulnerable to these types of attacks. I’ve a couple of tricks to show you that may help.”

[tag]

[ooc – Leif will activate inertial armor on himself (+4ac, 1pp) and Leiflet. He’ll gain his psionic focus and be prepared to activate thought shield if another attack comes in.]

[Ember - new - make sure to place this whole exchange some time BEFORE my armor activation, or Leif will get quite the jolt]

The warforged grumbled, "Hrrrmm. Aye. Fear you are correct in vulnerability assessment. Strong in many places, yet not so in mind of late." Forge training had covered many variations of assaults and a wide array of defensive tactics to counter them, but in the realm of battle, little emphasis had been placed on protection from psionics. The omission was either a gross misjudgment on behalf of the forge trainers, or it was deemed a minor threat on present day battlefields. Now, in a matter of a day though, Ember had succumbed to two psionic-based attacks. So quickly and easily. The vulnerability worried Ember. "Perhaps part of defect? Think tricks might help with... ongoing malfunction?"

“It could help,” Leif replied, “but I couldn’t say for sure. One thing I am
confident is that it wouldn’t hurt. You condition is a strange one, akin to
possession. From what you’ve told us, you’re trying to reconcile who you
were with who you are.” Leif paused. You view this other personality as and
invader, a malicious entity – and to you, it is. Understand, though, if what
your Master Digemon said is correct, you are the invading personality.
Someone erased that old you – and, from what you told me, we are all the
better for it. My training could help you defend from an attack from the
outside… but from the inside? I just don’t know.” Leif took a deep breath,
“You are my friend, and I’ll do all I can to help you. Perhaps we can figure
this out together but I fear that the majority of the fight must be
undertaken by you. And for once, your strength and weapons will not aid
you.”

NRPG: Hmm... realized you didn't mention combat rounds yet, so
here's a bit more in the way of actions...

REF: "Many thanks, Comrade Flask. Further agitation of external
plating will no longer be necessary."

RPG: Flask gave the construct a sickly grin, having realized all too
late his actions might have resulted in him being pasted thinly over
several nearby tree trunks if Ember had woken up less sane than usual.
"Glad tae be o' service, lad," Flask muttered, taking a hurried
step back the moment Ember released his hold of his leg.

As everyone reading themselves and took their positions, Flask took out
his bow and quiver from his magical bag and readied an arrow, drawing
the string halfway back, eyes searching for movement in the trees and
undergrowth. If the thing had indeed swallowed members of the Morgrave
expedition, it wouldn't be any odd worm but a true monster. Though if
it employed some strange magicks to befuddle the minds of lesser men
- men not versed in the arcane arts themselves, naturally - who
knew what else it was capable of? Perhaps hiding its presence from the
eyes of mere mortals?

Having managed to well and truly spook himself, Flask cast a furtive
glance over his shoulder, half expecting to see a titanic snake rising
like the vengeful deity of all the eels Flask had ever eaten, come to
deliver punishment on the old scout.

TAG: Everyone interested...

NRPG: Bow out, retreating to the middle of the group (Flask's
paranoid enough not to take the direction the sounds are coming from as
the direction the thing really is coming from...), readying an action
to shoot at a giant snake-thing at first opportunity.

Since Fabian is too busy watching football to update the turn, I guess we've all got an extra bit of time to prepare. :)

[Bryn new]

The hissing was getting closer. As the fighters joined her animals at what she hoped would be the front line, Bryn reached into a pocket. Retrieving three perfectly round stones, she held them loosely in her hand and concentrated on her link with Eberron. A moment later the stones warmed up, and she sensed that her need had been answered. Bryn took the sling that Leif had given her and loaded one of the enchanted stones into it. She set it swinging, ready for the first sign of the man-eating legless monster.

[Ready action...nail that anaconda with an magic stone from my ice sling. On a side note, when I was in Thailand I ate at a restaurant that had a snake skin up on the wall. It was an actual hide, not a discarded skin. The skin was tacked on the wall up near the ceiling, and wrapped around the entire restaurant, actually overlapping a little. In the middle was a photo of the snake being skinned....the legs of a three year old child were visible inside. It had eaten the little boy, then they'd hunted the python down and killed it. These things are real, and fucking scary.]

Ok, ok, no need to get excited; this only happens once every 4 years. :)

BTW, I'm going on a long weekend vacation (with limited email access). Can you believe the
nerve of my wife to schedule this while the world cup is going on.

I'll try to wrap things up tonight and get you all set up for another turn.

And, yeah, big snakes are scary, especially if you're being hunted down by one. :)

I sent this a couple days ago but don't see it in the group site. Here it is again.
Sorry so short but trying to finish my dissertation is killing me.

I may have missed something from the others post. For that my apologies. Fabian, please adjust accordingly.

If this is a duplicate, please ignore.

[Belkar-New]
Upon being shaken, Belkar looked around perplexed. For a moment, it was still like he was in a dream. The lush jungle around him was so vibrant and alive; everything was silent except the most interesting sound. Looking at the others, he didn't know them at first. He recognized them; but couldn't put names to any of them. And it was so funny the way their mouths moved but no sound came out.

The reality slammed into Belkar, leaving him temporarily stunned. Standing, his stomach heaved as it twisted into knots. Fighting back the urge to retch, he instead pulled his bastard sword. He looked at the others, "Where is it?"

Seeing the student walking away, Belkar nodded. "We can follow him."
