Troubled Past - An Eberron PBEM
http://www.geocities.com/cfbenave/Eberron/Eberron-Page2.htm
REF: Belkar quietly sat down and turned his head towards where the
noise was coming from; his eyes lost as if in thought. As if following
an unspoken order, the construct also sat down; its arms slumped at its
sides... and listened.
RPG: "Oh, bugger," Flask whispered as he heard the thing -
whatever it really was - getting closer. And those two tin-heads had
decided it was a good time to rest their feet!
"Up an' about, ye lazy bugger!" Flask shouted into Ember's ear,
planting his feet in a wide stance, putting his hands on the
construct's shoulders and tried his very best to shake him out of it
- whatever it was that ailed the construct and the commander. Were it
not for the presence of a threat it might have been a funny sight, the
thin, light-weight scout trying to muscle the massive and solid
construct around. The man's eyes were wide with panic, his bedraggled
beard twitching as if independently alive. At first the construct
refused to budge but then Flask managed to find enough leverage to get
Ember moving...
... and had to jump back with a yelp as the warforged fell down on his
back, almost crushing Flask's foot in the progress.
"Git ye up!" he raged, drawing back a boot to try to apply
sufficient force to wake Ember in a different manner; by kicking him in
the face. Gently.
TAG: Everyone interested.
NRPG: Shaking Ember out of it as per rules, hoping someone else does it
for Belkar. Hopefully this really *is* a fascination effect and not
just something similar to it.

"Someone stop Daram." He hissed the order as though someone might be listening. The healer himself stopped at Belkar's right shoulder and reached down to roughly jog the human back to wakefulness. His eyes scanned the surrounding jungle and his grip on the morningstar visibly tightened; he began to swing the spiked head on the end of its chain in a slow arc.
Thanks, I almost forgot. I'll be out of town with no web access from
Wednesday the 14th to Sunday the 18th.

[Bryn / old]
The air behind her animals began to shimmer, as if with the heat. A form quickly solidified in the intervening space. A broad, powerful form, with tawny fur and a golden mane. As the lion materialized fully in this plane of existence, he shook his mane and roared.
[Leif / new]
Leif felt the psionic power wash over him, his defenses easily batting it aside. First the bats, now this? Far too much psionics for Leif’s liking. He had often though of studying the localization of psionic effects but had always talked himself out of it. First, he had almost never come in contact with other psionists so didn’t really feel the need. And second, how would he know he had learned the ability? Without a source to test it on…
Leif cursed to himself. He reached down and Leiflet fell off into his hand. Her legs quickly materialized, this time with a faint green tinge. If one looked closely, they almost looked like the ghost of a vine. Leif smiled. He had often hypothesized that her legs drew there substance from the inherent psionic reservoir of the surrounding area. This confirmed this belief. Leiflet dropped down to the spongy trampled undergrowth. Leif touched her briefly and she scampered off between the legs of the student, climbing nearly silently through the dense forest. [ooc – Leif put Inertial Armor on her +4 AC, 1pp – she’ll scout ahead and report back. She’ll try to stay out of harm’s way and find out the number of type of creatures (I suspect only one but who knows?)].
[tag – dm]
Leif glanced over at Bryn who had a mischievous grin on her face. Confused at first, Leif’s eyes grew wide as he saw the animal that he had only seen in three places in his entire life: painted on his hand by the Halfling tribe, on the wall of the cave that Bryn had led them to, and in the mirror every time he shifted. The creature growled its displeasure at its unfamiliar surroundings and Leif wanted to whoop in joy. What a sound! The animal part of the shifter wanted to transform and run with this majestic creature. But he couldn’t, not now. But someday, if their lives ever settled down, he’d ask Bryn to summon this creature for him again. Someday…
Leif closed his eyes, shutting out all the distractions. He settled his mind and zeroed in on what must be done. He surrounded himself with a protective barrier and stepped forward. “Leiflet will report back what we are up against. I don’t think we’ll be surprised by what she finds but you can’t be too careful.” Leif stepped to the front of the group. What he had in mind he had never tried before and he didn’t know what exact form it would take. He wanted to make sure that the rest of the group was behind him.
Standing next to Ember, Leif patted him on the shoulder, “You and I have to do some exercises my friend. Your mind seems far too vulnerable to these types of attacks. I’ve a couple of tricks to show you that may help.”
[tag]
[ooc – Leif will activate inertial armor on himself (+4ac, 1pp) and Leiflet. He’ll gain his psionic focus and be prepared to activate thought shield if another attack comes in.]

Standing next to Ember, Leif patted him on the shoulder, "You and I have to do some exercises my friend. Your mind seems far too vulnerable to these types of attacks. I've a couple of tricks to show you that may help."
[Ember - new - make sure to place this whole exchange some time BEFORE my armor activation, or Leif will get quite the jolt]
The warforged grumbled, "Hrrrmm. Aye. Fear you are correct in vulnerability assessment. Strong in many places, yet not so in mind of late." Forge training had covered many variations of assaults and a wide array of defensive tactics to counter them, but in the realm of battle, little emphasis had been placed on protection from psionics. The omission was either a gross misjudgment on behalf of the forge trainers, or it was deemed a minor threat on present day battlefields. Now, in a matter of a day though, Ember had succumbed to two psionic-based attacks. So quickly and easily. The vulnerability worried Ember. "Perhaps part of defect? Think tricks might help with... ongoing malfunction?"

“It could help,” Leif replied, “but I couldn’t say for sure. One thing I am
confident is that it wouldn’t hurt. You condition is a strange one, akin to
possession. From what you’ve told us, you’re trying to reconcile who you
were with who you are.” Leif paused. You view this other personality as and
invader, a malicious entity – and to you, it is. Understand, though, if what
your Master Digemon said is correct, you are the invading personality.
Someone erased that old you – and, from what you told me, we are all the
better for it. My training could help you defend from an attack from the
outside… but from the inside? I just don’t know.” Leif took a deep breath,
“You are my friend, and I’ll do all I can to help you. Perhaps we can figure
this out together but I fear that the majority of the fight must be
undertaken by you. And for once, your strength and weapons will not aid
you.”

REF: "Many thanks, Comrade Flask. Further agitation of external
plating will no longer be necessary."
RPG: Flask gave the construct a sickly grin, having realized all too
late his actions might have resulted in him being pasted thinly over
several nearby tree trunks if Ember had woken up less sane than usual.
"Glad tae be o' service, lad," Flask muttered, taking a hurried
step back the moment Ember released his hold of his leg.
As everyone reading themselves and took their positions, Flask took out
his bow and quiver from his magical bag and readied an arrow, drawing
the string halfway back, eyes searching for movement in the trees and
undergrowth. If the thing had indeed swallowed members of the Morgrave
expedition, it wouldn't be any odd worm but a true monster. Though if
it employed some strange magicks to befuddle the minds of lesser men
- men not versed in the arcane arts themselves, naturally - who
knew what else it was capable of? Perhaps hiding its presence from the
eyes of mere mortals?
Having managed to well and truly spook himself, Flask cast a furtive
glance over his shoulder, half expecting to see a titanic snake rising
like the vengeful deity of all the eels Flask had ever eaten, come to
deliver punishment on the old scout.
TAG: Everyone interested...
NRPG: Bow out, retreating to the middle of the group (Flask's
paranoid enough not to take the direction the sounds are coming from as
the direction the thing really is coming from...), readying an action
to shoot at a giant snake-thing at first opportunity.

Ok, ok, no need to get excited; this only happens once every 4 years. :)
BTW, I'm going on a long weekend vacation (with limited email access). Can you believe the
nerve of my wife to schedule this while the world cup is going on.
I'll try to wrap things up tonight and get you all set up for another turn.
And, yeah, big snakes are scary, especially if you're being hunted down by one. :)
L8r,
Me too. It’s because I wasn’t expecting the hat.
