Sosince I live in rural Texas and my internet is not good for shit (I get 300 ping, 1 mbps when my family is home, which is 95% of the time), I've taken to playing single player games, which has lead me to playing a lot of Doom. But I miss playing arena shooters.

I already downloaded Quake 3 Arena and I am having fun playing against those bots, but I want another game. Since it'll take me forever to download one of the UTs, I want to pick the one with the best bots.


I would say Unreal Tournament 2004. To my knowledge UT99 to 2k4 essentially have the same skill set (I don't know about UT3) but in 2004 there are more mechanics due to the different game modes as well as movement. Also I've noticed in UT2k4 bots, and teams for singleplayer, have three "play styles"; Offensive, Defensive, and All-Round. This is more noticeable in deathmatch, but also effects team play in way making either your offense or defense better particularly in Bombing Run. The three Godlike tier teams and their leader also have one of the three play styles. I haven't noticed this in UT99 if it's present.


In UT99, bots had 5 combat styles:Berserk, Aggressive, Normal, Cautious and Avoidant. The names pretty much explain how they work, but it was less noticeable because aside from few bots, most of them had default settings, compared to UT2004 where every bot had it's own skill set from the get go.


99's bots have more room for personality, but 2k4's bots play better. They'll utilize lift jumps, slope dodges, and other "advanced" movement tricks, they'll time powerups, and they'll try to avoid players that are better armed or have a U Damage. In game modes like CTF, flag-runners and mid-fielders will work together.


The bot customization was much much better in UT99, and this was the only disappointing thing I found about UT2k4. I still use the same "characters" my dad created back when he first played the game, or at least when I was an infant. Each of them had a purpose, ranging from the team sniper, to agile and fast assault type character. I even created a backstory to go with them. Back on topic, while I don't know why probably because I was still a kid, I always saw the combat styles as an extra difficulty factor for bot customization and never took actual play style into account.


I'm playing on Skilled difficulty level. Completed 3 ladders and now trying to end the Assault one, but failed it twice.

Then I've collected some of the best bots into my team: Lauren, Brock, Thorax and Cobalt. Set them all on Auto-assign. They already, I believe, are much better in the ground fight, than I am. So I started the third try and both teams ran out of time on the second part of last task. Even while the first task (destroy lower smth) I did on the first life, in several seconds, it was still hard to land into the ship. And I tried my best and even scoreboard shows I did the game:

This game's version of the mode is a step-up regarding the past game's SP mode. The novelty in this case is that it's money-based. In order to compete and advance, you must gain money through beating matches. Like in the past game, you must create your own team and defeat them in order to progress, but you won't enter directly to the Tournament. You must win the Team Qualification rounds as well, which won't be easy.


It's the year 2303. The game takes place right after Unreal Tournament 2003. The team composed by Malcolm, Brock and Lauren was defeated by Gorge's team of Juggernauts in the past Tournament, and broke up. Malcolm returned to lead his old team, Thunder Crash, and Brock and Lauren reformed Iron Guard. Gorge also wants to demonstrate that it's team of Juggernauts isn't a one-hit-wonder team, and wants to win the Tournament as well by leading, once again, the Juggernaut team. Also, the Skaarj Empire sent a team to compete in the Tournament in order to make them to atone for the Seven Years War. And if that wasn't enough, the success of the Juggernauts prompted Axon to create and sponsor a new team of Juggernauts, Goliath, in hopes of creating an all-Juggernauts finals.


You start with an initial of 200 currency. You can win additional money as you win more matches. In addition, the killing sprees and kill combos will grant you small amounts of money, which are increased as you do longer (and several) kill combos and killing sprees. Said money will be spent in player hirings, teammate healings, arena changings, and matches. (See Challenges, below)


You can also get cosmetic awards by doing Hattricks, (capturing the flag while doing a dodging, or doing an acrobatic stunt with a vehicle) finishing a match with a Flawless Victory, or getting a determinate amount of kills with Shock Rifle combos, Sniper Rifle or Lightning Gun headshots, or with the Flak Cannon, among other things.


This challenge becomes available from the Domination Ladder onwards. In Bloodrites, your team must defeat the enemy team. If you were challenged, then you must fight in order to retain a member of your team. Alternatively, you may refuse the match but you must pay a fee which is often very expensive. If you challenged the other team, you must fight in order to get the other team's member. Unfortunately, you can't see the stats of the other team's member, unless you've already defeated them in the Tournament. The matches takes place in the big arenas of the game, and are set to 4on4, 35 frags, 20 minutes, and (if you're the challenger) you can decide if it will be an all-weapon or Instagib match.


This challenge becomes available from the Team Qualification Round onwards. In it, you must defeat the other team's leader in a 1on1 match. You have to select a map, and an amount of money to bet. The game will select two maps from the following pool, and then, you must defeat the other team's leader in a 1on1 match set to 15 frags in 20 minutes, except when fighting in CTF-1on1-Joust, where the match is set, instead, to 3 captures. When you win, you get the double of the money you've bet:


As you play, you'll get the chance to unlock more members for your team. Initially you can only hire bots from the Qualification Round. The teams of the Weak tier only appear in the Team Qualification round, and when you pass it, you can hire their members for your team. Also, when you defeat a Tier (by winning all matches in all ladders against that tier's teams) the members of that tier's teams will be available for hire. This eventually means that you can potentially get every single bot for your team (except the members of the team you face in the Finals) when it's time for the Final Round.


At this point the real ladders begin. The player faces teams from the Tough, Strong and Godlike tiers. Once an entire tier is cleared (by winning all of the matches of that particular tier), all members of that specific tier's teams become free agents, and the player can add them for their team. Once all tiers are cleared, with the exception of the best qualified Godlike tier team, every member of every other team of every tier becomes eligible, which becomes handy in the Challenge Ladder.


The game finals consist of a Team Deathmatch, followed by a 1-on-1 Deathmatch against a Godlike opponent. Your team has to face a team from the Godlike tier. Which one you'll face depends on their ranking, which you can see by clicking the Details button, and going to the Opponent Teams tab. You have to defeat first the whole team in a Team Deathmatch game, and then their leader, in a 1on1 game. All matches are clocked, therefore overtime feature is available in the case of a tie.


So I got fed up with Battlefield Heroes the other day. It's too bad because it was a fun game, but the fact they're selling weapons that give paying players the edge is a little more than I can tolerate. So I loaded up Half-life 2 Deathmatch and all the "team" servers were weird roleplaying games. Not something I really care to do right now.


So I don't know where to get my fix of team fps action. Is there a game that's not too expensive, that people still play, that's fun? Battlefield 2 and such look interesting but I want to see what other people think.


ARMA 2 is a great choice! But its has a really high learning curve at first. You also need a somewhat good pc. But once you get it down... 50 player co op... omg fun time! In my opinion best military shooter out there...


I'm big on the Call of Duty series with the exception of MW2. There are still a lot of people playing Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4, World at War is OK but not the best of the bunch. MW2 they killed the multiplayer server with the lack of dedicated servers and the inability to prevent hackers from cheating in the servers which they claimed was the reason they created the game without dedicated servers. talk about backfiring.
