Havingthe skills to fly an airplane is a great accomplishment, but just how much does a pilot license cost? Earning your license will include several areas of expenditures from tuition and materials to aviation insurance.

As of 2020, there are more than 160,000 individuals who hold a private pilot license. A license permits you to fly to and from a civil airport. You could go for lunch to another city or use your license to get to your vacation destination faster and on your own schedule instead of relying on commercial flights.

A private pilot license enables you to operate a single-engine airplane. Just know that you cannot operate the plane for hire or compensation. The only way you could earn money from your private pilot license would be as a salesperson demonstrating an aircraft to a potential customer.

Earning your private pilot license will include several areas of expenditures. But the total private pilot license cost will be approximately $10,000-$20,000 depending on where you attend flight school. The bulk of the expenses come from completing your training hours.

Part of your training to become a pilot will include studying to pass your written test. Your flight school will likely require that you purchase a workbook for the ground school training portion of your education.

Online training costs about $350. In-person training depends on the hourly rate your instructor charges, but most charge $50 an hour or more and it takes several hours to prepare for the written exam.

Flight school training is the most expensive part of getting your private pilot license and will vary greatly depending on how many hours it takes for you to receive the skills necessary for flying alone. The FAA requires 40 hours but states that most individuals complete 60-75 hours of training.

Some flight schools offer payment plans or other payment arrangements that make the schooling more affordable. Using one of these plans could help you fund the program over the course of several months with no interest.

Otherwise, you can seek out private student loans through a bank or credit union. Check with your primary bank to see if they offer loans and if not, look into other locations near you to find one with low interest rates to ensure fast payoff. Some aviation school scholarships are available to eligible students.

Federal financial aid is often available through accredited programs. Federal loans have much lower interest rates than standard loans. For some types of loans, you might need to demonstrate financial need. Others do not require such proof.

The more you know about aviation, the more affordable it will be for you to get your private pilot license. For example, if you study on your own, you can save a few hundred dollars on the written exam, making your pilot license more affordable.

Likewise, if you memorize the instrument panels before going up for your hours with the flight instructor, you can build confidence to get your license with the minimum number of required hours. Follow FLYING Magazine for regular industry updates and information to prepare for obtaining your license.

The final step toward getting your license is to pass a practical test, the cost of which varies based on the license, location, and type of aircraft used to conduct the checkride. Most practical tests cost between $350 and $550. However, flight instructors pay a higher price that goes from $500 to more than a thousand bucks in a few places.

In the aviation realm, it starts by getting a commercial pilot license (CPL). The certification allows you to get paid for certain aviation activities, including agricultural applications, pipeline patrol, and traffic reporting.

Start by defining your goal. Once you get that figured out, you need to shop around and see what different flight schools have to offer in terms of airplane rental rates, instructor fees, and financing options.

There are many kinds of pilots, from recreational private pilots to professional airline pilots, and many career commercial pilots in between. What category or class of aircraft will you fly and do you intend to seek a career as a professional pilot? One helpful factor is that you can start with a basic license and work your way up.

These estimates above attempt to include all the possible costs involved, beyond the cost of flight training and flight hours themselves. There are some other fees required to obtain the licenses, and different paths to achieve the FAA requirements, including choosing a Part 61 or a Part 141 flight school.

Very often when you contact a flight school asking how much pilot school costs, you will get a quote for the services that the flight school provides, rather than an estimate of the total cost to you. They may not include the costs of the FAA Checkride, rental fees, medical exams, or equipment costs necessary to your flight instruction.

Student pilots might need more than the minimum number of FAA required flight hours to feel ready to take their written exams and FAA checkride. It is very common to need more hours in the air to be ready to take a private pilot exam. If the quoted price is for the minimum, these additional and very necessary flight hours will add to the total cost.

Rather than searching for the lowest quote, student pilots should consider which flight school makes them feel the most comfortable and provides training programs that can allow them to advance as far as they wish. There are many ways to lower the cost of flight training that will more than make up the difference between those suspiciously low quotes and the more inclusive and realistic quotes you will get from a reputable flight school.

When determining how much a private pilot license will cost, it is important to be aware of how you can lower the overall cost and speed up the process of obtaining a pilot certificate. There is also the opportunity to move quickly to a flight instructor certificate, which will allow you to earn income yourself to fund more flight training.

I can't find a strong number for this and I would like to know. I'm compiling a list of total cost for each part of getting a private license (training, study material, headset, medical exam, etc), but I can't find how much the checkride will cost.

There's no standard fee for the checkride because each Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) is free to set his or her own price. I've seen numbers for a private checkride in the \$400-600 range depending on the location, but your instructor should know the local examiners and what they charge. Or just ask the DPE directly, of course. Bear in mind that you might have to pay extra if you have specific requirements like needing a checkride at short notice, on an awkward date, or at a particular location.

I spoke to multiple DPEs in my area. You can find the list on faa.gov. One asked for USD 600. Another one asked for USD 400. The cost is not really the problem. The problem is finding a DPE who can administer the test at a reasonable date. The first DPE which my flight school recommended didn't have any dates available for 6 weeks. The second DPE didn't have any dates available for 3 weeks. Normally you don't want to wait that long when you have done checkride preparation with your CFI. You really want to get it done and over with and get your shiny new license :) Also as pondlife mentioned, you can use an FAA examiner who is free but they are booked 2-3 months in advance. Before you select a DPE, I would also recommend looking at this resource. Not all DPEs are the same. You don't want someone like this to take your checkride. On the broader question of costs, you might have missed out the following:
