All,
On the off chance that I am not the only person who didn't know about this...
I just discovered the xlsx library, which, thus far, seems to be doing a pretty nice job importing xls and xlsx spreadhseets directly into R (on a Mac). Have noticed a few small issues with dates (1904 vs 1900 systems and some rounding discrepancies), and that it is a bit slow, but otherwise it seems to work a treat!
